How to Build Your First Copywriting Portfolio

November 21, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Last month I asked my readers to tell me what baffles them most about the business side of copywriting, and two readers said “getting started!” So that’s what I’ll show you how to do here. It’s the old “What comes first? The chicken or the egg?”, applied to a new career in copywriting. One of the major hurdles faced by new copywriters is the book, or portfolio. Or more specifically, the fact that there is none. How does a new copywriter get samples, and work, if he needs samples to get the work? I know how it feels to be in that position, and so does every freelance copywriter! No one is born with samples. But unlike the pre-Internet copywriters, who had to figure it out for themselves, YOU can ask your online colleagues! So here it is in a nutshell: three ways you can blast past the number one obstacle to getting started as a copywriter and get work when you do not yet have a portfolio, or even one lousy sample. Solution #1. This one is the easiest and may even have occurred to you. Do it for free! When I started out I quickly learned that small nonprofits were happy to accept free creative services. I also knew that I could bargain free for more control. A common complaint among copywriters is that a well-meaning but misguided client can muck things up, and the end result may be nothing like what you envisioned. So I told my non-profit client, a small women’s shelter, that I’d do a package for free, but I had to have complete creative control. This allowed me to show a piece in my portfolio that was really me. In fact, the photo on the front of the envelope WAS me! Not only did the experience give me a substantial sample, but it also allowed me to test my direct marketing skills. The package wasn’t a blockbuster. But it didn’t fail either. It did tell me how good I was, and I was slightly deflated with the results. But hey, back then NOT failing was kind of like winning! Solution #2. Look at friends and family. I’ve never used this idea but many of my coaching students have. They look at friends, family, colleagues, whomever they know in life or business, and offer to do free work. Actually, I advise my coaching students to offer to do free work and if the client likes it enough to use it, THEN they should get paid. It is a simple proposition: “I believe I can help you get more leads, or sales. Let me write a promotion. If you also think it will work, use it. If you use it, you benefit from my work. Only then will you pay me.” Important: Get this agreement into a contract! Solution #3. Hook up with a copywriter’s coach and ask to see samples. I do this all the time with my coaching students who have no samples. When the moment comes that the potential client asks for samples, send samples from your coach’s portfolio. Write in the email: “Here are some copywriting samples. I work closely with veteran copywriter (name of coach) to ensure maximum results for your promotion, and this is the level of quality you can expect from working with me. My site isn’t up right now but you can take a look at (name of coach)’s site.” It works like a charm. This approach works best when you are working with a coach who has worked in many, most, or all niche markets, like me. So this is my unplanned opportunity for a bit of self-promotion. Hey, I’m a direct marketer after all! So if you find yourself in a bind, guess what. You’re not! Just contact me. You can use an hour of my coaching to get past the #1 hurdle of all new copywriters, getting good samples that get you good work. We don’t lie; I never lie. All we do is “bridge” using my samples, your coach, mentor, colleague, and friend.

3 Simple Ways To Profit With Your Blogs And Websites

November 19, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Google has made some extreme changes to combat the total abuse of their Adsense program. Not only are they monitoring your sites with their Search Directory search engine spiders, but they are monitoring your sites with their Adsense spider bots. Scrapper sites are not rewarded with Adsense anymore.
The best way to build your Adsense Real Estate is by following the rules. It requires time and patience, but over time, the income generated from quality content sites can be substantial.
The first step is to take into consideration what your visitors are looking for. Mainly, people want answers. They want solutions to their current situation. They search online to find those answers and solutions.
If you provide high quality content with helpful solutions, you’re on your way to building a highly profitable website.
Let’s take a look at just three ways to profit from your websites and or blogs.
# 1. Place Adsense ads on your site. Match the colors of each block to the color scheme of your site, including the background, link and text colors. Get rid of the boarders as well as the “Advertise on this site” link.
The most favorable ad blocks are the medium and large rectangles. However, blending in other Adsense blocks works well if they blend in with your website or blog design.
# 2. Create your own products or service to sell. This is a time consuming task, but having a product to sell to your visitors is a great way to profit from your websites and blogs.
When you create your own product or service, you sell to your visitors and allow other people to sell your products for you with an affiliate program. Clickbank is one of the easiest ways to set up an affiliate program. Clickbank will list your product for free inside their product directory. Many people visit the product directory looking for products to sell. It’s a win-win situation.
# 3. Promote other peoples products. Promoting other peoples products will increase your profits greatly. You can start promoting other peoples products without the worry of creating your own, dealing with customer service, or any problems associated with being the business owner of the product.
Adsense is just another affiliate program. Promoting Adsense and other affiliate programs from your website will bring you a lot of profits over time.
With that being said, there are many questions that remain. You must drive traffic to your websites to acquire any profits. Without traffic, your site will never profit.
So, how exactly do you drive traffic to your websites and blogs?
Here are some very simple answers.
1. Write articles and submit them to article directories.
2. Learn how to create search engine optimized web pages and blog posts.
3. Pay per click advertising – not recommended for new marketers.
Okay, so that’s putting it all in a nutshell. What’s the next step? The next step involves action. Take some action. Create a plan for your Internet profits and stick to it. Follow the steps of successful marketers and get busy working the plan.

Targeted Web Traffic – How to Get Web Site Traffic With Free Resources

November 3, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Targeted Web Traffic is getting visitors to your site who are interested in what you have to offer. These visitors have to be able to find your web site first. The two most common ways visitors will find your site is by typing in a word phrase into a search engine or linking to your web site from another web site. There are several ways to get your web site on the search engines results page and on other web sites. Many of these ways are free. Here are three free resources you can take advantage of to get targeted web traffic to your site.

Writing articles and publishing them on article web sites is a great way to bring attention to your web site. And sometimes these same articles will quickly rank on search engine results pages. This gives you another opportunity for visitors to find your site. These articles should have keywords or search phrases in them that visitors use to find information on your website topic. For example, if you have a website on aquariums. You would want your article to have phrases in it about aquariums or fish. These keywords should be considered in all three ways I discuss to get web site traffic.

Keep in mind, one article will not get the amount of targeted web traffic you are looking for. You will need to write and submit several articles focusing on the topic or niche of your web site. Most article web sites do not allow you to put links to any web sites in the body of the article. However, they do allow a bio box about the author to be used and a link can be placed in this text that points to your web site. Before publishing any articles, review each article web site’s policies.

Social media sites like Squidoo or Hubpages are sites where the members create and provide most of the content for the site. These types of sites allow you to directly link to your web site. So, you can create a page on the site that discusses the topic that your web site is about. You can include links to your web site allowing the visitor to the social media site to follow the link or click through to your site. This then brings targeted web traffic to your web site because the visitor wants more information on the topic of your web site. As with all 3 of these web site traffic ideas, these social media sites want good content and not one big advertisement. Being spammy and not providing any useful content may get your page deleted. And there goes all your hard work.

Blogging and Microblogging are similar and are both ways to get targeted web traffic. Blogging can be done by having your own blog web site or using a community blogging website. Wordpress has both types. I believe it is better to have your own blog so you are in control of the blog contents. Blogging is a platform that encourages the question “What’s on your mind?” to be answered. This type of site allows you to put in your own content, create links to your sites or other sites, similar to social media sites. Updating your blog weekly is a must. The search engines love new content. These updates can be short. Microblogging are sites that encourage very short entries, some only a couple of lines. One of these sites is Twitter. If blogging asks, “what’s on your mind?”, microblogging asks, “what’s on your mind right now?”As with blogging, you can link to your web site with microblogs, but be sure to provide good, informative content.
Using all three of these traffic generating ideas together will help bring in a steady stream of traffic. All of these ideas should be done on a consistent basis to keep the flow of targeted web traffic going to your site. Although I have only listed a few resources, there are almost unlimited resources that can be used to get web site traffic.

Wordpress Product Review Template: Setting Yours Up

October 29, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Tired of messing with your HTML to make your website look like a professional review site?  There’s a simple solution.  Install Wordpress to your site, then find a Wordpress product review template.  There are three ways to find review themes: pay for someone to make it for you, pay for a ready made theme, or find a free theme online.

If you have your own hosting, you probably already know how to install Wordpress.  But if you need a brief overview, here’s how to install Wordpress using Fantastico.  Open Fantastico from your cpanel.  Then, look down the left hand side where it says blogs.  The third option is Wordpress.   Click on Wordpress, then select new installation.  Choose the domain you’ll install it to, choose your user name and password,  and press Install Wordpress.  After that, you can log into your wordpress site by going to http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin.

Once you have Wordpress installed, you need to choose a theme.  You can go through the Wordpress site, but none of those fit well into a review style theme. You can also have a webmaster design a theme for you, but that will cost you at least $500.  If you’re just starting out, that can be too much money.  Instead,  I advise you to search online.

You’ll find both free and paid templates online.  Free is great, but most will have coding errors or not be easily customizable, so you’ll need to know HTML.  If you can find a good paid template, I’d advise you to look into it.  Most run about $70-$100.

However, I’ve found one I really like for much less.  It’s easy to customize, looks professional, and even comes with a choice of headers.  Plus the price is unbeatable.  Interested?  Go watch the video of it in action here.
