Google Adsense – An Introduction To Earning Via Contextual Advertising

November 20, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Google Adsense is a highly popular method of “contextual advertising”. With Adsense, website owners can display text or image ads that are closely targeted to their site content. The site owner gets paid each time a visitor clicks on any Adsense advert displayed on the website. The amount that is paid per click depends on what the advertiser is willing to pay per click (minus Google’s commission). The Adsense publishers commission can be just a few cents or several dollars per click. There are certain keywords available where advertisers pay over $100 for a single click.
This matching of content to ads is done automatically by Google, so for example, a website that has content about travel to the Maldives will bring up adverts about holidays in the Maldives – such as flights, resorts and other travel/holiday advert displays. The website owner benefits because they do not need to do anything aside from insert some simple code onto their site.
Google Adsense is closely related to Adwords. If you have searched through the Google search engine you have probably seen the sponsored ads that are found on the top and to the right of every page. Google Adsense just takes this concept a step further by allowing ads from the same advertisers to be displayed across billions of web pages & blogs. It’s a simple yet highly powerful concept that has revolutionized online advertising. It allows grandma to make some residual income while sharing her apple pie recipes. It allows sports enthusiasts to set-up a blog following their favorite football/cricket/basketball team and make some money in the process. And it allows serious website content owners to make a significant stream of income by displaying adverts on their website network. Everyone has something to gain by using Adsense.
While some people rely mainly on Google Adsense for their website income, others use it to supplement their main income. The very top earners from Adsense are able to yield incomes of several thousand dollars each month just from Adsense, but equally many struggle to collect just a few dollars daily from their Adsense sites. We’ll look at how you can get into the former category shortly but first let’s investigate some of the advantages & drawbacks of the Google Adsense system.
Make Sure You Understand The Google Policies Before Starting
While Adsense is a fantastic way of creating an online income stream, it’s important to keep in line with its terms and conditions. Before you can set-up a Google account, it will check out your website to make sure you are eligible to participate in the Adsense program. Here are the Google policies that you should familiarize yourself with before and during your time with Adsense:
https://www.google.com/adsense/policies
Having quality content to offer is one of the biggest assets your website/blog will possess in order to qualify for the Adsense program. Having multiple informative articles on the general subject of your website niche will greatly improve your chances of being accepted into the Adsense program.
Advantages Of Using Google Adsense As An Income Generator
- It’s easy to use and simple to set-up. For those who have content it’s possible to start displaying Adsense adverts in minutes. It’s one of the most accessible sources of online income available.
- Many people dislike “selling” online. If you fall into this category and the idea of having to write specialized sales letters does not appeal to you then Adsense could be a good income generation system for you. The website owner can focus on publishing good content & driving traffic to the site – the ads are automatically displayed and will sell themselves to the website visitor.
- Equally, many people dislike the customer service aspect of owning an online business. Having to deal with customer queries can be tedious and stressful. With Adsense, the site owner is paid each time someone clicks on one of the displayed ads, and that’s all there is to it.
- In the right conditions, Adsense can be a significant source of income. Some website owners have proven to yield as much as $19,000 & more a month from Adsense income alone. Of course this type of income is very difficult to achieve when you first start up (unless you have a huge site network with massive traffic streams).
- Google has an incredibly large number of advertisers so however specialized your niche there’s a high possibility of being able to participate in the Adsense program.
- Adsense offers a high degree of customization – the look and feel of the adsense displays can be changed to closely match your site. This ultimately results in higher click-through ratios.
- Just about anyone can make a start with Adsense. The program itself is free and even those who do not have the funds or technical expertise to set-up their own site can set-up a free blog.
- Google allows you to block out adverts that you do not want displayed on your pages (for example those of direct competitors).
Drawbacks With Google Adsense – Some Points To Consider If Operating This Model
- You need to have solid content to succeed with Adsense. For those with a lack of time to write their own content some investment may be required to hire a ghost-writer to create content for them, or to acquire private label rights content.
- As soon as the user clicks on the Adsense ad they are taken away from your site and onto the advertisers site (ie the ad does not open in a new window). This can lead to lost revenue for the website owner.
- Google takes a hefty chunk out of the amount that the advertiser pays to display his message on your website. This may be countered in the future as more “big players” enter the contextual ad market – the competition could mean a greater portion of the ad revenue will be retained by the website owner.

Introduction to Social Media Marketing

November 20, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

In this paper we offer an introduction to the new Internet phenomena – Social Media Marketing explaining:
1. Why it’s important for small businesses to understand it
2. What to do, and how to go about it. (all the site names are links)
3. Where to go to start building a web presence.
Why you need to be marketing via Social Media
Do you need to get into Social Media Marketing (SMM) – Almost certainly YES because a) the other approaches don’t work so well anymore, and b) because it offers a much wider reach, to a more closely targeted audience. And it’s free.
a) Other approaches don’t work any more:
* Cold calling on the street – when was the last time anybody got invited in to make their pitch?
* Cold calling on the phone – talking to voice mail isn’t fun anymore.
* Print and other broadcast media – far too expensive and unproductive.
* Email – authorized sender lists and other filters send these to Trash.
* SEO your marketing site – Google ranks advertisers first and content (in blogs) next.
* Adwords – cost per click is driven up by big brand budgets and only Google makes money.
On top of these is the resistance we all have to intrusive advertising. Our brains, our Firefox or our Tivo, allows us to filter it out.
b) Social Media platforms aren’t intended for marketing, but do help us get messages out there, to people interested in the subject. The creators built these systems so communities could interact, on the Internet. Members avoid advertising like everybody else, but as in other social places, they are open to meeting people and learning and sharing. Participating in these communities, we can meet people who are buying what we sell.
Social Media Marketing is:
1. More effective
2. Wider reach to people who are interested
3. Free!
The Seven Secrets to Being Welcome
Getting started with SMM can appear intimidating. All of these places seem full of experts who use their own special languages. We have to write and publish stuff in ways people want to read. Most of all it seems to take up so much time.
But actually it’s easy, provided we stick to the fundamental principles:
* Avoid Internet Marketing Experts like the plague. Sites are dominated by these characters trying to drive readers to their blogs, in the hope they’ll click an Ad. They know less about SMM than we do, or they wouldn’t act the way they do.
* Find some genuine (there are a few) SMM experts and read what they generously share in their blogs. A great starting place is chrisbrogan.com. Find Chris’ paper “Fish Where the Fish Are” for the most clear explanation.
* Sign up to sites where your prospects, or people they know, hang out. Be social. Fill out your profile as if you’re joining a club. In Social Media, members like to know the person behind the business. It’s just like meeting people at a cocktail party.
* Write blog posts on stuff you really understand. Make these posts short, to the point, and offer genuine expertise. The objective here is not winning a Pulitzer Prize – it’s sharing your expertise. Don’t pretend to know something. Frauds are exposed in a heartbeat.
* Write comments in forums, sharing what you know with people who don’t. Answer questions posted with short comments directly on subject. People interested in the same subject watch the answers to questions. The question becomes the focal point of a mini community. Here you can answer one question and have ten people recognize your value add.
* Don’t make promises you can’t keep. Bad news about a product or service will be around the world in a nano second and consign the perpetrator to oblivion.
* DO NOT SELL. There are plenty of fools who do, but they’re noticed as Spammers. There’s no need to sell. When we know what we’re talking about, people in the market will want to buy.
Anybody following these rules will be welcome on discussion forums and other meeting places.
Easy Steps to Global Presence
We need to think of the Internet as a spinning plate. We can stand in the middle and not move while it goes on around us, but we know there’s stuff going on out there. The perimeter is moving much faster then the center. It’s all a blur.
To join in we’ll need to move toward the outside and be prepared to move more quickly. The further we get out there the faster we have to think, and move. What’s happening isn’t near the center, it’s out there on the edges. In today’s world it’s a case of “be out there, or be square”.
In B2B, the good news is we don’t have to get to the extremes of what the gurus are dreaming up. Our audience, being more focused on business than redefining the world, congregates in places where it’s easier to play a part. Not that far from the center. Further out there will be opportunities in the future so we should stake out a place, but we probably aren’t going to do business there – yet.
Most of the sites out there have been started by people wanting to get paid for advertising, one way or another, and run the site for their own benefit. Why not start at Front Office Box User Group ?- it’s run for your benefit. You can manage your own communities, get all your blog posts automatically sent to content distributors. Get your profiles indexed by Search Engines, and advice from the Social Media Marketing group.
At WeCanDo.Biz create a profile in the directory, receive endorsements from customers and business partners, contact other members via messages and post any business needs to the community. Coming soon will be a business forum.
At implu.com find up to the minute details of 167,000 company officers, create a personal profile and share your “stories” about corporate America. There’ll be blogs and a forum coming soon.
Not many people know but you can set up a business profile on Facebook go to Mari Smith for a guide.
Next go to to Linked In. Here we find 25+ million professionals, like us, wanting to connect for business: reconnect with past colleagues, receive job offers, get help from their peers. Linked In has 1,000s of special interest groups and posts questions and answers in 100s of categories.
Growing fast is a host of special interest sites using Ning and Collective X software. Both offer directories of their sites. There are 1,000s of Ning sites, some with 100,000s members, focused on special interest or geography. Ning makes it particularly easy for us to set up our own, and keeps a consistent profile of us and our “friends” across all of it’s sites. Find some interesting groups, join and join in discussions. You’ll be familiar with the way it all works- the user group’s a Ning site.
Spread your Internet footprint by submitting content at Ezine Articles. From December 2008 join AddsYou for more of the same opportunities. Post the same content in Squidoo lenses and Google Knols. Contribute to Knols Debates. – researchers use these like encyclopedia.
Get a Google account. Post content in your Blogspot blog, publish it in Google Sites pages, make videos and publish on You Tube.
Answer others’ questions anywhere you find them – particularly at Linked In, Yahoo Answers and Knol Debates. People appreciate the help, and Google is watching – by now you’re becoming a world authority on your subjects. (worth remembering 99% of the content on the web is regurgitated garbage – if your stuff is good it’s easy to stand out).
Microblogging and What We Can Do With It
At the extreme edge of our plate we come to microblogging with Twitter, Pownce, Yammer, Plurk and a few more – on the face of it the most meaningless service imaginable, with broadcast publishing limited to 140 characters and a host of complimentary software/services adding value to it. The number of people joining Twitter is growing at a blinding rate, because the members are creating purpose for it as they go along. With Twitter the lunatics really have taken control of the asylum.
Even further out we come to Twingr. This is a site/service letting people create their own communities, just like Ning but limited to the 140 character post size. (It’s brand new so might need some time to fix a few things.)
Why limit messages to 140 characters? Because it cuts to the mustard. People out there want to benefit from our insight, not out literary skills. The limit focuses minds on the meat. Readers can scan hundreds of posts in a few minutes, choosing ones they want to know more about.
Microblogging started with simple status updates – what I’m doing now – between friends. Then it exploded with users and innovation.
Now news services monitor Twitter posts to find out what’s happening. Journalists monitor them to find out what people are thinking. Politicians are doing the same, and engaging a new public with their own ideas. Software companies are publishing service notices to their users. Brands don’t need customer surveys anymore, they just monitor Twitter.
Sales guys are monitoring Twitter to find out who’s interested in what, and what’s being said about their competitors. This is the new source of sales leads, and we don’t have to look for them, they come to us.
More than a million early adopters are publishing news and opinions to the rest of the world. The service is so successful, developers everywhere are writing programs to add value – including Twitter Search, monitoring keywords and sending every post using them to our RSS reader, and Twellow, a directory of Twitter users with more than 620,000 entries.
With Twitter we can find new friends and colleagues anywhere in the world. We can learn of a new opportunity, evaluate and decide within just a few minutes.
We can be so much more productive, because we’ve got access to so much more information and support. It’s the ultimate question and answer service.
What’s Next ?
Beats me! We just need to keep up with pace.

Since 1977 my world has revolved around selling – everything from milking machines to mainframes, and from debt collection to outsourcing. Life has mostly been fun, and usually profitable. Benefiting from excellent training, and working closely with some truly excellent people has shown me the very best of best practice in the science of selling. Adsense and SEO

Amongst all the tricks and secrets you may have heard from various gurus, one of the main areas for better traffic when optimizing your site for Adsense is a clear and well defined foundation of search engine optimization.
The trend at the moment is working with social networking and social bookmarking sites, putting backlinks upon them and getting traffic. The backlinks help bolster your page rank and increase the search engines sense of ‘authority’ your web pages have. It is this return visit the search engine crawlers make when following the links that are important.
If your web page isn’t sensibly optimized for the keyword phrase, the backlink isn’t going to be worth much. However if the crawler meets your web page with a sense of well organized quality, your website’s backlink is worth considerably more.
Let’s assume for one moment that you’ve put an ‘anchor text’ for “property in Kensington” upon one of your blogs on a social network. This blog’s backlink points back to a page that has a page extension called “property in London” and both the meta tag title and headings tags refer to “apartments in London”. Apart from a human visitor being confused, the search engine crawler can’t find the words “property in Kensington” and therefore stops crawling and leaves your site. Google being the biggest search engine, may not even show that backlink because of irrelevance.
One backlink to a quality website has more value than 20 backlinks to a poorly optimized site. 18 months ago the story was different, webmasters were able to trick the search engines with a 1,000 backlinks obtained with various ‘black hat’ methods, and also get ranked higher than a quality site. Crazy growth in websites and backlinks throw up a question mark to the search engines, and more recently have been getting human visits from the search engines to determine what is going on.
If you build your Adsense website correctly from the outset, you will receive dividends in the long term.
Building your Adsense website is a long term strategy and creating a good SEO foundation is imperative. I hope that the one tip above has made you consider tweaking your website for better optimization.
Adsense can be a good money earner if you approach it right, as a business, and not as a temporary flirtation with online income. My own main tip is not to do too much too soon.

Adsense Illegal Traffic

November 13, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Many people have asked me what forms of traffic are illegal in the eyes of google adsense. Some have said that they felt they were using totally legitimate methods to attract visitors to their pages only to receive the dreaded “adsense wrist slap email”. Something like “It has come to out attention that ads on your site are being clicked by visitors using non-approved techniques…If this continues we will be forced to discontinue…etc. I think you get the message.

So what exactly are legal sources of traffic in the eyes of google adsense? Well, google adsense says that clicks must come from genuine internet users. So isn’t someone who clicks on a redirect sub-domain from bought traffic a genuine internet user. Not if the link is sending bulk traffic to your site from the same IP address. So most of the traffic you can purchase is illegal by adsense standards, but not all. Finding a supplier of good traffic can be like finding a needle in a haystack and is probably not worth the effort because the chance of it being relevant is minimal. Anyway, traffic like this will increase your page clicks but not the adsense ad clicks. And this defies the purpose!

Other forms of traffic that are contrary to adsense regulations are paid-to-click, paid-to-surf, autosurf, click exchange programs or any type of software that can automatically send traffic to your site. Google uses the words “Includes but are not limited to…” when stating the above so it leaves it pretty open. These prohibitions also include but are not limited to robots, automated clicking, impression generating tools or third party services that generate clicks.

So what are the legal ways of attracting traffic to your google adsense ads without being penalized? Well ironically, one can buy clicks from adwords which also belongs to google and they will send traffic to your site. Having said that, if this system is set up correctly it will bring targeted visitors to your adsense site and the ROI is quite justifiable.

One of the best ways to draw visitors is to focus on SEO techniques to improve your adsense site placement and ranking in the search engines. Relevant link partners are also a good source of targeted traffic. Signatures in forums, emails and on blogs which have the same subject matter as your pages.

Some people recommend safelist but I have never had any success with them. But I have had great success with solo ads as far as selling my products and getting clicks. But again you have to be sure you are getting targeted traffic for your dollars. Testing and tracking are also vital to attracting traffic and maximizing clicks. It is crucial to know which techniques are working and which are not in order to fine tune your adsense strategies.

So yes many forms of luring visitors to your site are illegal by google adsense law but more often than not the methods are unfruitful and a waste of time anyway. Common sense should also be a guiding factor in deciding which methods to use. Remember that you should be trying to build up a rich content blog or site and that if you consider adsense as a secondary bonus it will naturally yield fruit in the end.

Increase Web Traffic With SEO

In the last several years Google has become a widely-recognized brand, even recently ranked as the top-known brand name in the world. Anyone who is hosting a website, advertising online, or doing business should understand how to utilize Google services well. In short, over half of all Internet searches use Google.
Google’s services can help searchers find your business in several different ways. Your site, like all the other public sites on the Web, is scanned often by automatic ’spider’ applications which make an examination for the links and content of each web page. Google’s index contains over ten billion pages; the company updates its indexes on a regular basis, a task that requires the use of almost half a million servers.
When users submit search terms at the site, Google will present a list of selected and ordered matches. The order in which they are presented is determined by several different factors. The factors of this search include the relevancy of the content on the page to the search terms, along with what Google calls the ‘PageRank’ of that particular page. Other factors probably play in as well, but these algorithms are secret.
PageRank is expressed as a number which is calculated during the process of indexing (0-10). Each web page that the spider examines will be assigned a PageRank number. Starting at zero, the number grows as the page receives links from other sites, either from the same host for from other externally-based sites. The Google policy here is that pages receive rank not from the amount of accesses they serve, but by the correlated relevancy of content and the amount of links that refer them. Google’s description: “Google interprets a link from page A to B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Votes cast by pages that are themselves important weigh more heavily and help to make other pages important.” So, increased site traffic won’t improve your PageRank, but a better PageRank will probably result in increased traffic to your site.
Where Does Your Site Sit in Google’s World?
To find out your site’s PageRank, use Google’s Toolbar in your Web browser. If you don’t have it pre-installed, just search for it.
How Does a Site Increase Visitor Traffic?
There’s an entire new field to address this question: search engine optimizers. These SEO companies are great for expert advice. There are also some things you can do to increase the amount of unpaid traffic at your web site.
1) Website Redesign – Make your site focus more on the issues that people search on more frequently.
2) Place Articles – These articles can feature incoming links to your web site.
3) Localize – By adding sections by geographic location, your content can feature info related to a particular place, including community events. Google gives favor to a search that includes a city name in it.
By implementing these simple suggestions, you could see your unpaid web traffic triple in short time.

The Secret of Google Pagerank

November 12, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

If you have a new website and you want people to visit it, then you are probably going to be interested in learning about PageRank. So what is Google PageRank, and why does it matter? Well pretty much, PageRank is what the search site Google uses to determine the quality and popularity of a webpage. Thus, it really is choosing if the site will appear at the top of the search engines results. So if you want your site to come up in search results, then you should care about what PageRank things about your site!
When PageRank first came out, it usually ranked the sites with the highest keyword density at first.
During that period someone with basic seo skills was able to get a website in the top 10 results without to much hassle. People were using that weakness to rank their sites higher. Now that time is over and in order to get in the top 10 results on google you have to work harder and build a lot of back links to keep your head out of the water and generate some google organic traffic from google.
So how does Google PageRank rank your website now? Well, in theory, Google thinks that if a page has a lot of links leading to it, then it must be a pretty important site. Thus, if you have a lot of links out there on other sites leading back to your website, it is going to do wonders for your search engine ranking. In fact, you can think of a link on another site kind of like a vote for your site. So, say website A has a link to website B; then it would be like website A was voting for website B! Of course, it does not just stop there. Sites that have a higher ranking have more weight when voting. Thus, if you are linked to a lot of small, low ranked sites and then another site is just linked to one high ranked site, they could be ranked above you.
Of course, with any system there are flaws. People tend to post their links anywhere to try and get their ranking up. In fact, if you have ever come across a web page that has nothing except a ton of links on it, then you just uncovered a link farm. This is a site that is made to not be found by people. The only things that usually find this page are the Google Crawlers. Thus, they find the links and count it as a vote for another site. However getting your link on a link farm does not count as a positive vote for your web site. Keep in mind that all links are not created equal! Link farms are considered spamming by Google so try to stay away from link farms. In fact, getting your links to several link farms websites may get you banned from some search engines and especially Google.

Does Google Have a Golden Rule?

As a full-time webmaster and site owner, figuring out just what Google wants has been the most challenging aspect of running an online business. For many webmasters Google is the eight ton elephant in the room and you only have two options: upset the elephant and get trampled or quickly find out what it likes to consume and try to feed it.
In order to keep Google fed, webmasters have to jump through more than one set of hoops. When it comes to getting top rankings in Google’s Index or SERPs, there are 200 of these hoops or ranking factors. And if you want to play in Google’s ballpark, you have to try and master the majority of them.
For years, frustrated webmasters have been guessing and searching for these ranking factors. Asking what does Google want? How does Google rank pages and keywords? How does Google want you to build your site?
Ten years ago it wouldn’t have mattered what Google thought of your site for it wasn’t even in the picture, but now when it comes to online search, Google is king of the hill. And as we all know, kings get whatever they want.
Besides, any webmaster worth his salt, knows Google is what counts when it comes to organic traffic – you can achieve #1 spots for a keyword in all three top search engines (Yahoo and MSN being the other two light-weight contenders) but Google will simply deliver the most traffic to your site.
Google doesn’t as yet have a monopoly on web search, but it’s getting close to 70% of U.S. traffic and in some countries it’s up over 90%. But it’s not only the search numbers which makes Google king – it is the prestige and power of the Google brand name. Google has truly permeated into popular culture and the public psyche like no other brand name in history.
Google brings respect and trust into the equation. Web users respect and trust Google to give them a quality answer to their question. That’s why it was rather ironic, that for years webmasters have been asking Google about their ranking system, their algorithm, their practices… for years Google remained for the most part silent. This was mainly to keep at bay, those who would like to “game” the system in order to get high rankings within Google.
Until now that is, maybe it’s just me but doesn’t it appear that Google is suddenly opening up about its whole ranking procedures and what they expect from webmasters. Maybe the answers have always been there, we just couldn’t find them. However, a more likely scenario is that someone high up within Google made the decision to be more transparent with it comes to webmasters and how much they would tell them.
In recent Webmaster live chats, Googlers Matt Cutts, Maile Ohye, among others… have been honestly answering questions about what Google requires webmasters to do regarding their sites. These are Q&A sessions dealing with the “burning questions” webmasters have had for years concerning Google and what Google wants. Do a search in Google for “Google Webmaster Help | Google Groups” if you will to find these sessions.
Since I run several modest sites on webmaster tools and Internet marketing I am approached by more than a few people who want me to help them build their online site or business. One of the major issues that always comes up somewhere in the process (usually phrased in different ways) is this question:
What does Google want? What does Google expect of my site? How do I get ranked high in Google?
Mainly because my chief goal is to help these webmasters understand Google better in order to build a profitable site; I have struggled and puzzled over this question for years.
What is Google’s Golden Rule?
Many experts believe it is related to relevancy – the key to getting high rankings is how relevant your content is to the question being asked? Maybe so, but in order to explain it to a would-be webmaster, I had to find the words that would most appropriately sum up Google’s prime directive?
After you go through all the SEO checkmarks, take into account the quality and uniqueness of your content, factor in the credibility and authority of your site and backlinks, and factor in the relevancy issue… this was the simple Google Golden Rule I came up with:
“Always think of your visitor first when creating any content for your site.”
This may or may not be what Google is expecting but all indications are pointing in the direction of the “visitor’s experience” and how good you or your content make that experience? Google is serving up a product, it wants the user of their product to be happy with the results. If they’re happy, Google is happy. And if everyone’s happy then the kingdom grows.
Still anything as simple and as complicated as getting top rankings in Google can’t be boiled down to a single catch phrase. You must do your homework and a good starting point would be to thoroughly read Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. Studying and listening to the latest Google webmaster chats may also prove beneficial and helpful.
However, there are still those 200 hoops you have to jump through and you must be extremely careful of how you build your site if you’re trying to please Google. Listen when the king speaks. Observe his rules. Be on your guard, and it helps to become just a little paranoid. And always, always remember, an elephant never forgets.
