Are your Web Site Pay-per-click Costs Killing You?
November 14, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment
Well, it’s been awhile since we have posted any ezine articles, and you may have wondered why that is. Well, Bob and I have been very busy looking at alternative ways to drive traffic to our web site, but first we had to figure out how to get that cost prohibitive, money-sucking web site out of the basement in the search engine rankings; it was at 3.8 million. Our pay per click costs were killing us.
Our goal has always been to learn Internet Ad Copy well enough to be in the top 10 organic listings, the free listings, on the left side of the page, instead of paying per click for advertising on Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Being in the organic listings, the free listings, on the left side of the page means a huge financial burden would be lifted off our shoulders. All we had to do was get our web site ranked in the top 10.
Our gut instinct told us that having a Multi-Media blog was the answer. Multi-Media means you have video, audio, and content on your site. We call this Network Marketing 2.0. We just had no clue how to do that. Being pioneers, we decided to look into a Word Press blog as we thought that was the way to go.
From February on of 2007, I worked like a dog on a free WordPress blog, doing all the maintenance and multitudinous upgrades myself. I complained and whined to Bob on a regular basis saying, “This is an absolute crock.” You see, the biggest fly in the ointment was the unbearable amount of maintenance on the blog while still doing our main business activities to generate revenues. Bob took most of that load off my shoulders, but still, it was a nightmare involving 10 to 20 hours a week with techno tard skills. I don’t know what plug-ins work where, what didn’t work now because of an upgrade, and so on. The blog upgrades started coming in at the rate of one to two per month. The first three times I upgraded the blog, I wiped the whole thing out and had to start over which meant our blog was not even appearing on the web.
Back in mid August 2007, Bob and I agreed that something had to give. We were fortunate enough to pay attention to our email from Simon Leung and got on a call about blogging and automated blogging software. Our prayers were answered even if we knew nothing else about blogging.
As we continued to listen to the call about using a blog to drive traffic, we got more excited by the minute. The tools seemed so logical and simple and now we could get the education about how to use these tools. My partner was in total agreement with what needed to be done. Naturally, my partner was going on vacation again so he said, “We’ve got the tools. You go, girl.” And so I did. Shazaam. Ninety days later our web site was assigned a Google Page Rank of one (1). We felt like we died and went to heaven.
So if you’re still with us, you’re saying to yourself, What’s the catch? What’s the trick? To be honest, the ranking did not come from the web site itself. It came from where we linked to. We’re not talking about trading links and all that sort of rot. Not at all. We linked to our own sites.
The best link we have from our Building Your Biz site goes to our blog. Now, this is just not any blog, obviously, if you can move that quickly up through the search engine rankings on Google. It’s special. You can go out and get a free blog through any one of the hundreds of companies out there or you can get some cut-rate job. However, you have to look at what the blog software does for you. Is it easy to use? Does it get your posts, podcasts, videos (we don’t have one yet on the site that is ours) out through the RSS feeds and wherever else it’s supposed to go? Remember, I said we are techno tards.
Well, the traffic is really picking up from all directions and sources we never even imagined. People are opting in and staying on our lists. Now all we have to do is figure out the next step, conversions. Again, that process will happen in another 90 days as we are now getting more tools to help us do that again. (However, this time Bob’s vacation time is canceled until further notice.)
By the way, Bob being a doubting Tom and me being a doubting Thomasina, we really had to know if a high page rank really lowers your pay-per-click cost. I just had to try it one time to see if our theory really worked. Can you imagine having 15 click-thrus to your site for under $4? We were ecstatic.
The key to everything we do can be boiled down to one practice every home business owner must adopt, and that is Learning with a capital L. Learning is a nonstop process for those who are dead serious about their businesses and want to generate really, really good revenues. Whether you’re an affiliate marketer, direct marketer, or network marketer, education is key. Take it from us, Bob and I have spent thousands and thousands and more thousands of dollars on courses that ended up being worthless trash. We have an incredible stack of CDs and DVDs we’ll sell you. Someday, we’ll even review them for you.
However, no matter where your traffic comes from (and a lot of it will be free if you follow what we’re doing), you still have to continue using 20th Century Marketing skills and build your business through the telephone, Internet, and Ad Copy. We say this for two reasons. One, do you want to forget about making money for 6 months or more while you learn? Two, if you are a network marketer trying to build a business with the verbal marketing skills of a dolt, you may have some serious problems with your credibility. Building your biz requires a phenomenal amount of knowledge and business know-how. There are tools to be mastered. But most important of all, you want a prospect who is totally warmed up to you, knows, likes, trusts and respects you before they ever meet you. A blog helps you achieve all that and more, like a great Page Rank. Building your biz in the 21st Century can bring you the thrill of victory or the agony of defeat. You can bang your head against the wall and wonder why it hurts like we have, or you can try shortcuts until you are lost in the Kalahari Desert, or you can do what two techno tards did and have a tried and true path to success. Make Money Blogging: Why Blogger.com Might not be Right for you
November 10, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment
Blogging for profits usually involve a blogging tool or platform. Blogger.com and Wordpress are two of the most popular ones. This article focus on using the former and why I do not think it is an ideal tool to use if you plan to make money blogging for the long term.
No doubt Blogger.com is a popular blogging platform which attracts thousands of people who want to start making blogs and post them on the net. However, for business savvy people, blogger may prove to be a liability instead of a tool for making money. For one, if you apply for a blogger account and use it to post affiliate links, sometimes blogger will detect these links as malicious, spam, or porn links and will automatically shut down your account. Blogger also posts your blogs to certain blog directories such as blogspot, where you cannot sell your blog or receive any earnings easily.
Google bought Blogger.com in 2003 in an anticipation of the rush of bloggers and blog posts and creation of new content. As such, Google created a different search tool called blog search. This search tool screens all blogs to its search domain, leaving other non-blog sites to be picked up by the normal Google search. In short, this means that you cannot create good back links and have a high ranking for your blogs in Google. Ultimately, blogger is not a reliable tool for search engine optimization.
Aside from these, blogger has limited plug-ins, themes, and add-ons compared to the likes of Wordpress. These perks improve your blogging experience and sometimes come in handy when posting blogs depending on your preference. Blogger may be free, but there are cases where Wordpress seems to surpass Blogger.com when you really want to earn money. Most blogging veterans do not recommend Blogger.com if earning money is the concern and would rather endorse Wordpress.
Another concern most bloggers have is the lack of control or rather the ownership of the blog. Since it is hosted on Blogger.com, you are basically building someone else’s website by adding unique content regularly. Yes, Blogger does allow you to redirect a domain to your blog but still you don’t own it.
That’s why Wordpress is much preferred because you can host it on your own server and as you build it up and attract more targeted traffic, your earnings potential will soar accordingly.

Make Money Blogging – is That the Best Way?

For most people who are sole owners of their own internet business, blogging is a way to generate an income, where the expense are low, and you only need good writing skills and a free blog from blogger.com. Blogs can be monetised by putting banners and paid advertisements on the top and side. A blogs purpose allows you to connect with an audience that have immense interest in your thoughts and sharings.
Easy platforms you can blog with:
1. Blogger: This is a free service from blogger.com. The layout is very easy to use and you can monetise the blogs with Google’s Adsense. Registering for Adsense is as simple as visiting Adsense.com. Copy down your Publisher ID and insert it into your blog. This will allow advertising to appear on your blog based on the content you’ve written.
2. Wordpress: Wordpress has many plug-ins you can use to enhance your blog. It has also many designs and themes you can choose from. Some themes are pre loaded with money making adsense advertising. Wordpress is best used with a domain. Usually when you purchase a domain and webhosting, you’ll be able to install wordpress on your website. So say if my website is shermanchoo.com, then I can install the default wordpress blog from my hosting cpanel, and later ftp some new templates to my theme folder. Wordpress is a little more advanced then Blogger.
While blogs can make one money, not many will reach a 5 figure income from blogging alone. Blogs should be used as a medium of communication where you can offer tips and advice for your customers. To get repeat visits to your blog, you’ll need a mailing list of folks in your niche. By combining a blog with a mailing list, that will greatly enhance your income.

Why You Should Learn How to Make a Blog With Wordpress

If you start your blog on the wrong platform, you are asking for trouble. Think about this: if your start your blog the wrong way, you could lose all of your search rankings and many of your readers when you try to change gears. Don’t let this happen to you! Start the right way, right from the start. So “Which blogging platform is best?” I hear you asking. The answer is simple. After years of blogging and using platforms inside and out, it all comes down to WordPress being the hands-down winner. Here are a few reasons why. WordPress has an extensive theme directory. Themes are used to change the look and feel of your blog. You don’t need to know how to design or code a thing. There are thousands of free, premium, and specialty themes to choose from.WordPress has an extensive plug-in directory. Plug-ins enable you to add interesting functionality to your blog. How about a map of your recent readers? Adding a contact form to your about page? Showcasing affiliate products? You can choose third-party plug-ins or even create your own. WordPress offers complete administrative control over your blog. There are very few things that you can’t do with your WordPress blog if you’re self-hosting. My stock answer when anyone asks: “Can I do _____ with WordPress?” is “You can do ANYTHING with WordPress.” It won’t make you coffee in the morning, but it’ll handle most everything else.WordPress has excellent user management, using a role-based security model that supports multiple levels of access. For example, authors can write articles, editors can publish those articles after approval, administrators can change the design of the blog. This is incredibly convenient if you want to allow multiple authors to write posts for a blog, or perhaps set up a membership site. Forget about hiring a developer; just use WordPress’s built-in user registration functions.WordPress has an active and enthusiastic contributing developer community. This means that software updates are frequent, bugs are fixed regularly, the software is mature, and requested features are actually added to the product by people who care about and use the product. The WordPress community is a reason why WordPress is such a powerful and easy-to-use product.WordPress has an easy-to-use page editor. With pages, you can really blur the lines between what is a web site and what is a blog. Pages allow you to store static content (i.e. content that isn’t regularly updated). It’s free! There are other free blogging packages out there, but none offer the same combination of power and simplicity that WordPress offers. Here’s an interesting exercise: Google “moving to WordPress” and see how many results are returned. People are switching to WordPress software for a reason. In a nutshell, if you’re blogging, you need to be using WordPress. It’s that simple. WordPress has built a fanatical community and support base for a reason: they’re the best.

Strategies for Preventing Comment Spam
November 17, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment
Bloggers are painfully aware of website owners who try to improve their websites rank by adding links to blogs. There are several strategies for combating this problem. The first and most obvious method is to avoid free blogger sites. These are favorite targets for comment spam.
Bloggers who own their own software can add a no-follow tag. The rel=nofollow tag does not stop the spam, but it does stop robots from following the link. Blogger, owned by Google, implements these tags already. Wordpress has anti-comment spam plug-ins to help bloggers stop comment spam.
Do not bother banning the IP address – unplugging a computer for one hour can change the IP address, and changing a servers IP address is relatively easy. Some companies buy IP addresses in blocks of a hundred or more, and spammers also use open proxies. These are IP addresses that allow anyone access.
Configuring a blog to prevent javascript and HTML code in replies is a solid and easy to implement method of attacking comment spam. It is possible to configure some blog software programs to automatically convert any string that starts with http:// into a url. This will not stop manual comment spams, but it will stop the crawlers.
The spam crawlers search the web looking for descriptive form names. Field names like comment or reply make it too easy for comment spam crawlers to find a potential victim.
Many blogs are using CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart). This new tool requires the user to post a text and number combination before their post is published. However, a simple trip to the freelance bidding forums already indicates that countries (Ukraine and India are the most obvious) are hiring people to do nothing but post comments all day. This undermines CAPTCHA tools anyway!
If you are able to configure your blogs software, then there is a very simple trick for stop automated comment spam software. The form submit HTML is:
form method=”post” action=”http://www.example.com/bin/comment”
The action specifies the web address (URL) of the executable used to publish the form results. Simply remove it and add an onsubmit attribute:
form method=”post”
onsubmit=”this.action=http://www.example.com/+bin/post-a-comment”
This is not 100% effective, but it will stop most spam crawlers.
There are two other methods that are available to most bloggers. The first is user authentication – this requires the person to sign up for a user name and password before publishing a post. This slows down comment spammers in two ways: (1) they must take an extra step before publishing, and (2) most authentication programs are configured to accept an email address once.
The second method is to moderate every post before it is published, but the sheer time involved can be daunting. However, the advantages of having 100% control over your blogs content can tip the scales in the favor of moderating. Many posts do not use relative keywords, or post irrelevant comments based on an emotional reaction to the information. Moderating the blog allows the blog owner total control over the information on their page.
