1: Identify A Market
You need a marketplace to sell to; not having a ready demand for your product or service is like trying to set up a your business in a wasteland. You might get a few passing customers, but they won’t come by very often!
Choose a market for which there is good and lasting demand – ideally where you are not in too much competition, although the “little guy” can often still show the “big guns” a trick or two!
2: Products To Promote
These could be your own, or someone else’s (i.e. affiliate products – which you will sell on a commission basis). This is your merchandise, and where your income will come from. You should aim to offer something unique to attract your buyers, rather than attempting to sell a product or service that has already saturated the marketplace.
3: Get Your Own Website Address
Ideally, I’d suggest getting a “.com” address with your chosen web hosting service, because it appears much more professional. Select a domain name that’s your own name, if you can. This will give you a solid base to build on, no matter which direction you want to go in, and will let you build your personal brand. Alternatively, get a domain name that reflects your business area.
There are many hundreds of web hosting services to choose from (avoid free ones as they are almost certainly going to place competing ads on your site!). Web hosting service nowadays cost from as little as $3.95 a month. Choose a well known and respected hosting service as reliability and support are very important factors for your business.
4: Create Your Webpages
Why? Well, it just makes everything so much more straightforward if you have a website and pages that you have full control over, and can change to suit your own needs, add further products to etc..
Web page editors are widely available, and even free WYSIWYG editors these days are powerful and easy to use.
5: Get An Autoresponder Account
Why? Because an autoresponder makes it so much easier for you to build a subscriber mailing list and keep in contact with your customers and prospects on it.
This is almost certainly going to be where your long-term income will come from, as it is much easier to retain and sell to your existing customers than it is to find new ones. You can create follow up emails for your subscribers which will be sent out automatically by your autoresponder service at preset intervals, which will free up your time for the other aspects of building your business
6: Create A Blog
Blogging is a great way to keep your content fresh, which will help your search engine rankings, and this in turn will get you more free web traffic from them.
Free blogging software is available from sites like blogger.com and wordpress.com; Wordpress blogs can either be hosted for you by Wordpress, or can be installed on your own website.
If your blog is hosted seperately there is the added advantage that linking to your main site from your blog pages can help your search engine ranking for your main site as well.
7: Get An Online Payment Processor
Obviously, for an online business you need to be able to accept payments online as well; Paypal, Alertpay, and Clickbank are possibly the best known.
Clickbank has the added advantage that they also give you a built-in affiliate program, and they can handle paying your affiliates for you if you are also making your products available through affiliates for a commission.
8: Generate Traffic
Without the benefit of a traditional high street store, you will need to tell people that your business exists, and how to find it on the internet. Ideally you should be announcing your business to people that are likely to be interested in your products (known as targetting) rather than to all and sundry.
There are numerous ways generating web traffic to your website, ranging from free resources like Traffic Exchanges, to “Pay Per Click” marketing with Google Adwords, Yahoo, MSN etc..
When you’re just starting out, free traffic generation resources may be the best option and can provide significant volumes of web traffic – in fact, well over 90% of my own sites traffic is from free resources like Traffic Exchanges and Article Marketing.
An in depth look at traffic generation is outside the scope of this article, but you can find more info and resources on this subject on my website.
Those are the 8 steps to follow for setting up a successful home based online business; there are other tools and resources that you might benefit from later as your business develops.
Don’t expect overnight success, which is rare in online marketing; persevere, keep learning, and you will find success.

Whether you are a freelancer, internet marketer, offline business owner, or a recent college graduate who is looking for a job, you need to create a strong and professional online presence to succeed in today’s business world. How do you create an online profile that is recognizable and trustworthy? Follow the steps in this article and within a couple of months you will establish a polished online personal brand for yourself.
1. Get a domain. A top level domain, preferably a dot com domain, is a must for your personal brand. It can be a your name, your business name or some other assumed name that you want to associate yourself with. If you already own an offline business you can start with your business name.
Finding a short domain name is almost impossible these days. In most cases, you will be able to find a three words domain name easily. If your own name is somewhat unique, you can be that lucky one whose name is not already taken by domain squatters.
Use DomainBot to do your domain research. When you enter one or more keywords in the DomainBot search box, the website will suggest a large number of available domains that are different variations of your keywords. If you like a domain, you can directly register the domain with one of the domain registrars like godaddy or 1and1.
2. Get a website. After you register a domain, you need to get a web host to host your website. If you are absolutely not going to spend any money for web hosting, sign up for Google’s Blogger platform to start a blog. It is free. Use your own registered domain, instead of the default sub domain that Google offers for Blogger platform.
If you are ready to spend $25 a month, you can sign up for a reseller account at Hostgator. With a reseller account, you can create unlimited websites. Hostgator offers a commercial script library called Fantastico that automates installation of web applications in your sites. Start with installing a Word Press blog.
3. Get your globally recognized avatars. A globally recognized avatars or gravatar is a picture that follows you from site to site appearing next to your name when you do things like commenting in a blog, posting in web forums.
You can use your own picture or a professionally designed graphic image for your gravatar. If you are using a graphic picture, make it unique and get it done professionally. If it is your own picture, take the picture in a lighted area showing your face clearly.
4. Start a blog. Pick a few topics that you are interested in. One of them should be your chosen profession or business niche. Also pick topics related to your hobby or something that you want to learn more about.
Create an about page in your blog, put your avatars and tell your story in short 300-600 words. Make it interesting, intriguing, or humorous.
Go to Technorati, a blog directory, and search your topics to find blogs related to your interests. Subscribe to a dozen high quality, popular blogs using Google reader. Make a habit of reading a few interesting articles in your niche every day.
Now start writing your own articles for your blog regularly. If you like writing, you can write couple of times a week. If you have hard time coming up with topics to write about, start with a few articles a month and slowly work towards one article per week.
5. Visit blogs and forums related to your topic of interest. Leave insight full comments in other blogs and create interesting posts in forums. Create a forum signature with your gravatar in every forum you join.
Use a back link to your blog in your signature. When you create a post in a forum, your signature will be appended to your post. When you post a comment in a blog, use the URL of your blog and your gravatar name. You will be instantly recognized.
6. Create Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin Profiles. Facebook and twitter are two popular social media sites with millions of users. Facebook is mainly used for networking with like minded persons and Twitter is for sharing short timely messages about news, industry trends, interesting articles, and if you are doing any interesting thing. Linkedin is for exchanging information, ideas, and opportunities with professionals in your field.
Update Facebook status and post twitter messages every day. You can start with sharing interesting articles that you have read, productivity tips, interesting pictures, etc. You will soon find people start following you in Twitter if you are posting interesting things every day. Using Facebook’s friend suggestion tool, you can request friendship with others in the Facebook network.
7. Learn and use search engine optimization. It is a very valuable instrument at your disposal to propel you websites and social media profile pages for higher search engine rankings. You don’t have to be a professional in search optimization, just learn the basics and apply them whenever you create contents.
You don’t need to buy any expensive books or sign up for extensive training program. Use free information available online. You can start with SEOBook site and download some free ebooks on search engine optimization.

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. I started using tweeter some time ago. Surprisingly after few days of posting some tweets it started getting indexed in Google. While Google continues to dominate the world of “search”, it has a long way to go in offering real-time search capabilities.

Seeing as how Twitter is becoming more and more popular amongst businesses (even Walmart uses it!) we have decided to give you a quick over view of some Twitter best practises.
Top 10 Twitter Tips:
1) Make objectives about what you want to achieve by using Twitter, and stick to them. You need to know what you want to achieve with Twitter. If there are too many things, create more than one account – each one should have its own agenda and credibility. Think about your user name. If you want to build up awareness for your own name brand, use your name, but if you want to build up your company name, you could try a mix of your name and the company name or just the company – depending on the length of your company name. E.G Leila_Interleado. You don’t want to use a name like superstar69 because it gives absolutely nothing away about you or your company and it doesn’t inspire any kind of credibility.
2) When you add your avatar try not to add a picture of you wearing a giant silly hat, or you sitting in a boardroom. You want to be a human as well as professional. You also want to inspire confidence in your business capabilities and not look like a joker. Keep it simply you -and enforce your brand (whether it’s a personal brand, company brand, or your voice in the company brand).
3) Add your URL and a small bio to your profile. People will have an online reference to learn about what you are offering them or what else there is to learn about you. Your profile reflects your brand.
4) Twitter is like micro blogging. Your messages have a limit of 140 characters. Make them count.
5) Twitter is no longer there just to tell people that your dog had 5 adorable puppies and you have decided to name them all Bob and Trudy. Now is the time to use Twitter to tell people about your business goals, your professional interests, to spread knowledge and offer customer support. Use your own ideas to spread the messages – be unique!
6) That said, by no means is it deemed acceptable to spam your followers with “Tweets”* only concerning your company and how great it is. This is a sure fire way to either lose follower or not gain any. Add a human touch by passing on the link to an article you found funny or interesting. Tweet about issues you have online, things you found on your way to work, ask questions and reply to what other “Twits (or Tweeps)”** say. Offer customer support for example. Be useful but keep a balance.
7) Add followers who you think you can learn from. Hopefully they will think the same of you and follow you in return. It’s about building up a network here, the more useful all the connections are the better for you and everyone who networks with you. This means not automatically following people who follow you too. Depending on what you want to achieve, it seems logical that you would only follow people who have things to say that you find useful or interesting in any way. This is a chance to gain new blog readers, newsletter subscribers or software users. Again, this depends on what you want to achieve with Twitter.
8) If you like what one of your followers contributed, say so! By “Retweeting”*** what one of your followers or someone you are following says, you let them know that you found what they said interesting and that you are willing to share it with others . You could also reply to them or send a direct message and let them know. To retweet something, users typically type in “Retweeting” and the user name with an @ in front of it to show who posted it originally e.g. “Retweeting @LeilaPan” then paste the Tweet here. To reply to someone you type in the user name with an @ before it e.g. “@LeilaPan nice article!”. Users can be notified when they get these replies so they will know you replied to them or retweeted their message and may be more inclined to return the favour. Try to keep a balance though, people can see when you are Tweeting your own messages or when you are replying or Retweeting – make sure you have your own voice.
9) Use Twitter regularly. The more you use it, the more interaction people see. The more use people see in following you and the more followers you will receive!
10) Twitter can give you insight you may not have had before. It can form part of your online reputation management. Track what people say about you or your company, or both! See if people are Tweeting your articles. By responding to what people say about your brand you build up your network and credibility.
Of course there are many Twitter tools and resources out there to help you use the application as best you can. It’s all about using it and finding out what works for you. You might also want to brush up on your Twitter lingo (you could even make up your own Twords! Twitter words…that one’s all mine.) Twittering can be fun, and keeps the communication lines with your target audience wide open.
The most important thing to remember is that this takes time, but it is becoming more and more widely accepted as a way to interact with existing and potential customers or even your niche heroes.
