One of the fastest, easiest ways to get started with an online business is to promote affiliate products. This way, you eliminate the time-consuming task of having to develop your own product. Promoting digital e-books through Clickbank is an easy way to go. You can simply pick one of the 12,000 plus e-books listed, run some pay-per-click ads, or write an article or two, and wait for the checks to roll in. And there’s nothing wrong with this model, if you want to make a few extra bucks on the side.
But as you become more experienced, you will quickly learn, as I did, that the customers you send to these affiliate links are now long gone, and they are no longer YOUR customers. They are now your affiliate program’s customers. So, while you may have made a few bucks in commissions, you were really working for free to build a nice list for your affiliate program. They now have those customers for life and can continue to promote new products to them.
Now, think about it. What if 1,000 people read your ad and clicked onto your affiliate website? Well, you may have made a few sales, but what happened to the 1000 people who clicked on your ad in the first place? Someone else has those names, and you gave them away for free! This is a big mistake and one that is easy rectifiable.
I’ll bet you’ve heard the phrase, “The money is in the list.”
I know I ignored this important bit of wisdom for a long time. I knew that the right way to promote affiliate products was to have customers go to your website first and then on to the affiliate sales page. This way YOU could capture their email address and they could become your customers. But if you’re not a techie, the thought of building a website, getting an autoresponder to capture email addresses, and following up with emails might send shivers down your spine. The thought of it all made me dizzy.
So I tried a few different things. At first, I bought a CBMall,
www.clickbank-success.com and signed up as an affiliate. This is a wonderful concept. You simply run ads or write articles to promote this Clickbank Mall and when someone visits the mall, all nicely sorted by topics and buys a product from Clickbank, you get a commission. You as the mall owner, are allowed to purchase any Clickbank product at the affiliate discount, which is a wonderful benefit. I save tons of money because I buy LOTS of e-books. Another great benefit is that once a customer makes that click, the CBMall sends a free newsletter and does the follow-up for many months. The only downside is that you don’t capture the email addresses and you don’t build a list.
So then I also joined a plug-in Clickbank affiliate website, which means that you can build a basic website without techie knowledge. You simply point and click to the Clickbank products that you want to offer and they magically appear on the screen, image and all. You write a little copy and presto, you’re done. Now you have your own website. What you don’t have is an autoresponder. You can purchase one yourself and add it to the website, but this is where it gets a little tricky. You have to know how to use a Cpanel, which is very complicated if you don’t have the training and you also need to have some knowledge of HTML. Finally, I discovered a new idea created by a pure genius!

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a controversial topic endlessly discussed in the online community. There are those say that the practice is unethical, as it aims to trick search engines, while others say that highly aggressive optimization is necessary for online survival. But just what exactly is SEO? Why is it important, and why is it so controversial?
You can think of SEO as one way of boosting traffic to your site. If you have set up a site for profit or promotion, you will find that even the best designed, informative site will not generate revenue without visitors. There are many avenues by which visitors will come to your site: advertising in print media such as magazines, online pay-per-click advertising, advertising in e-mail magazines, word-of-mouth, domain recognition (i.e., someone typing your site’s domain into their browser), and so on. Many webmasters hope to bring visitors to their site through search engine searches, as this is a form of free traffic. No matter which form of site promotion you choose, you will want to maximize its effectiveness. Pay-per-click ads should be carefully writing, domain names should be carefully chosen, and so forth.
SEO is a way of increasing the amount and quality of the traffic your site gets through search engine queries. For example: your site sells widgets. A potential customer types “buy widgets online” into a search engine and gets 24 pages of results. Most internet users will browse the first one or two pages of results only, meaning the sites appearing on the remaining 22 pages will have very little traffic from search engine queries. Major search engines such as Yahoo and Google have set out guidelines for webmasters. SEO techniques that comply with these guideline are called “white hat” strategies, while those that do not are called “black hat” strategies. A recent term, “grey hat,” refers to tricks that fall somewhere in the middle. A common black hat trick is using hidden text. For example, black text on a black background will give the target keyword and variations dozens of times. Since human visitors do not see the text, much search engines “read” it, this will boost search engine rankings. Black hat strategies are not illegal, but they do conflict with search engine rules. Sites that use black hat tricks may enjoy good rankings for a few weeks or even months. However, when the search engines discover this, the site will be removed from their index. If a site is removed from a major index like Google or Yahoo, people will still be able to visit that site, but the chances of receiving traffic through search engine queries falls to zero. White hat SEO is not only ethical, it is imperative.

Can A Self-referencing Article Be Used To Generate Web Site Traffic?

There are all kinds of methods used to generate web traffic. One very good traffic generator is article marketing.
The way it works is that you first determine what you want search engines to find, look for the good keywords about the subject, and then write an article that revolves around a your keyword or keyword phrase, post it strategically on the web, and allow the search engines to it. Usually authors include a resource box at the end of the article that contains a link back to the website that you are marketing.
Places that you can post your article include your own blog, and articles directory that is on your website, commercial article directories such as http://goarticle.com, or http://ezinearticles.com. You can also post articles on some web 2.0 pages (like Squidoo), etc.
Additionally, you can offer to let your readers publish the articles in their newsletters or on their websites. It may seem that the publication in the newsletter would not really help you. However, you must realize, that many publishers post archives of their newsletters on their websites.
The reason that they will republish your articles, is because they need or want to provide content to bring their websites to life. So the better your articles, the more likely it is that at least some marketers will take your article and publish it giving you credit, of course, and if you set your article up right, you’ll also get a link back to your website.
The idea is that you can generate web site traffic that appears in the organic areas of search engines. The organic areas of search engines comprise the most direct matches to your query. They are what the person asking the question looks at first. The person making the query may also look at the pay per click ads along the right side of many search engines, for these may also be relevant to the query.
Thus, it can be seen that both the organic and pay per click matches can be used to generate traffic to your website. The main difference is that with organic matches you don’t pay even a penny, whereas with pay per click items, you pay every time somebody clicks your ad.
You can, of course, use software to help you create your articles or to help you generate traffic in other ways. For example, the way I am creating this very article is by dictating it using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, which is so good, that I barely need to touch the keyboard at all.
While I’m a pretty fast typist, I can go nearly three times faster simply by dictating what I want to communicate. The software converts it into text right before my eyes. Even with the corrections, I go faster by dictation than I do with the keyboard.
I also use keyword research software to figure out what keywords and keyword phrases I should be using to generate web site traffic. It’s not always simple, but sometimes it’s unbelievably simple. And for me, dictating the words while looking at the keywords gives me a lot of confidence as I create my articles.
I’ve touched on a number of different ideas in this article. I also included a number of different keyword phrases in the same article. So the question that I have, because this is something of an experiment, is whether or not the search engines, as well as my visitors, will find articles like this useful.
After all, it is the utility of an article that makes it worthwhile, at least to this writer.
