Effective Steps to Overcoming Binge Eating

November 24, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Binge eating affects about one in every 50 people in the United States. But even though it is the most common eating disorder in the U.S., it does not receive as much publicity as similar maladies, like bulimia, anorexia, and depression. As a result, there is still quite a social stigma attached to binge eating, leaving many of its sufferers feeling isolated and hopeless. However, it is important to realize that there are steps you can take to stop the cycle of binge eating.

The first thing you must do is to determine if your problem constitutes binge eating. It’s common for people to head for the pantry or the refrigerator on occasion to reduce stress or unwind. But if you find yourself repeating this process constantly, or if you tend to do so to fill a void or escape your problems, then you are likely turning to food as your main solution for dealing with tension.

These “emotional eating” tendencies are a major component of binge eating. Also, binge eaters often feel that they cannot control the amount of food they eat during these emotional eating episodes. They also feel powerless to stop eating, even when it makes them feel sick. Because binge eating is usually accompanied by feelings of shame, sufferers often eat in secret, and even hide food from others because they feel embarrassed about their level of food intake. But the most common indicator of binge eating is the inability to think about anything other than food.

Even though the disorder is called binge eating, its underlying issues have less to do with food and more to do with how you feel when you eat. A person who suffers from binge eating might act normally during a social situation where food is involved; but when he or she is alone, the pace of eating may increase dramatically. While it is common to be concerned about your weight, binge eaters tend to be more obsessive and desperate when it comes to weight loss and dieting. Binge eaters often do not stop eating when they are “full,” but will continue until they feel uncomfortably “stuffed” or “bloated.” Similarly, these individuals may consume food even when they do not feel hungry. And the concept of “meal time” is frequently unimportant to binge eaters because they eat continuously throughout the day.

However, the most powerful effects associated with binge eating can be found on an emotional level. During and after binge eating episodes, sufferers may feel depression, guilt, embarrassment, or even disgust. Many people even report feeling numb or being on “autopilot” while binging on food. And no matter how much food is consumed, binge eaters may not ever feel satisfied — even when they eat themselves to the point of sickness.

Unlike more high-profile addicts, such as alcoholics or drug abusers, binge eaters cannot practice complete avoidance of their vice. So they must adopt a strategy of learning to change their relationship with food. The first step in that process is to learn about and practice smart eating habits that focus on meeting your nutritional needs instead of your emotional ones. There are a host of sources that can inform you about calorie counts, portion sizes, and nutritional details to help you plan a diet that is healthy and appropriate.

This strategy applies not only to meals, but also to snacks and desserts. However, you should try to avoid fad diets and shortcut weight-loss techniques, because they have the potential to make you hungry or tense and push you back into binge eating.

Once you formulate an eating plan, eliminate the temptation to overeat by throwing out or giving away the unhealthy foods you tend to seek out during binge eating episodes. Then try to find a simple and fun type of exercise that you can perform on a regular basis. Not only will this help you lose weight, but the natural mood-boosting chemicals released during exercise will improve your outlook and reduce stress. In addition to exercise, look for other techniques or activities to lower your stress level, such as reading, meditation, or massage. The less stress you are saddled with, the less likely you are to turn to food to relieve it.

Though medical experts have not yet isolated the root cause of binge eating, physicians have developed strategies and regimens to treat it. So if you are unable to defeat binge eating with lifestyle changes alone, ask your doctor about alternatives. He or she may recommend different types of therapy to help you change your behaviors, identify the triggers associated with binge eating, and learn the skills to defeat them.

There are also support groups and medications that can help with binge eating. Most importantly, you should know that binge eating is not a permanent condition that you have to suffer through. On the contrary, you have the power to take steps to eliminate binge eating and improve your physical and emotional health.

How to Get Started With Copywriting

November 20, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Web copywriting is one of the most booming professions today. Many people have seen the convenience of simply using their writing skills to generate income, even from the comforts of your very own home at their own time and pace. While it is one of the most rewarding jobs today, it takes some amount of risk when getting started. It is best to take the field rather slowly, than jumping right into it. Here are some tips that will help you get started with a copywriting career:

1. Spend some time in learning about copywriting.

Copywriting does not only involve sitting down and typing your thoughts away on your computer. It takes hundreds of hours to comprehensively learn about it. You have to spend your learning time wisely and to learn only from the right sources. These days there are many e-books and mini-courses that promise instant wealth through copywriting in just a matter of hours. Be cautious about these and remember that no new skill can be mastered well in just a matter of days. Do not be in a hurry; if you want to do well in this field, focus on the long term instead. You have to arm yourself with the right skills to help you through if this is something you would like to base your income on.

2. Write each and everyday.

Cliché as it is, practice makes perfect. It is the same thing for copywriting. Remember that once you get a job as a copywriter, you will have a bunch of writing assignments to complete everyday. Try to rewrite a piece, or write something about one topic that is of interest to you. Think about local businesses in your area and try to come up with advertisements or web page introductions for them. There are many things you can do to sharpen your skills. After some time, you will hone it just enough to get started in writing actual project.

3. When ready, go for smaller paying assignments (or even those free ones).

When you feel that you have mastered the basics of writing, you just might now be ready to go into a real copywriting project. You can then start approaching companies for copywriting work. There are many websites offering copywriting jobs that you can search through. It is always best to start with small time projects. You can even offer them for “free,” asking for client feedback as your payment. This way, you will learn more about what companies look for, and how you can improve your work further. You will also eventually find out that not all clients are easy to work with.

Starting with free copywriting work is worthwhile because it gives you a small portfolio of your work. This will serve as sample articles for clients who require them. This small portfolio is a set-off in establishing your copywriting credibility. Of course, concentrating small and low-paying assignments does not mean that you do not eye on big projects. Keep fishing and keep trying and you will eventually land into one soon.

The best advice to follow in copywriting is to keep everything slow but sure. If you are thinking about being a full-time freelance writer, do not give up that job much too soon. Copywriting is not a get-rich scheme. Invest effort and time in learning more and in developing your writing skills and in attracting good clients. Everything will surely pay off in the end.

But still Google has its unbeaten competitive edge.Compared With the Previous Year Share of Microsoft Sites, Bing Lost 0.8%Even though there was rapid growth rate in Bing’s market share, it lost 0.8% from June 2008 to June 2009. Bing not even reached the old “Microsoft sites” share. It is not a negative sign but a challenge for Bing. It shows that the initial efforts are not enough to sustain in the market.Bing Gained The Lost Market Share Of YahooYahoo retained the second position with 19.6% Market share but lost 0.5% from May to June 2009 and overall it lost 1.3% from June 2008 to June 2009. It is clear that the 0.4% gain of Bing entirely from 0.5% dropped share of the yahoo.Bing succeeds in its first month. Bing gained the lost market share of Yahoo. Though it indirectly affects Google, Bing gained on the Yahoo but not on Google. In order to perform well and gain on Google, Bing has to put more effort and maintain high momentum than earlier. Overall, this leads to a healthy competition between the three major search engines.

Binge Eating | Binge Eating Disorder | Compulsive Exercising

November 18, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

The term bulimia means excessive or abnormal desire for food which is better described as ox-hunger. Bulimia Nervosa disorder has the character of repeating occurrence of binge eating which develops the person with lack of sense for having no control on eating behavior and encourages self-induced vomiting and intake of laxatives and drugs to get rid of this eating habit. This eating disorder is usually of three main types; Bulimia Nervosa, Anorexia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. It involves long lasting and obsessive eating pattern in the person suffering from this eating disorder. From the past 20 – 30 years, the number of people suffering from this disease is enormously increasing at a faster pace.

Anorexia nervosa is a disorder which compels people to starve themselves in an obsession of becoming thin. This disorder mainly affects teenage girls but men are no longer remaining exceptional in this case.

Bulimia nervosa, abbreviated to bulimia generally, is a disorder where an individual goes through the binge-eating session, followed by their worsening health. They often develop self-induced vomiting feeling of guilt for having eaten much. People suffering from bulimia nervosa tend to develop bulimia symptoms like this. They usually scare and suffer from an artificial preoccupation of gaining weight in their own body. People who suffer from this disorder greedily consume food in a huge quantity in an attempt to get rid of their stress and in another to deal with their anxiety feeling.

People having binge eating disorder intake high caloric foods in a frequent manner but this does not induced themselves for vomiting unlike people with bulimia nervosa sufferers. Studies and research have reported that binge eating disorders are likely to run in different generations of the family, so it is obviously a case having genetic links.

This is a psychological disorder that mostly affects women and very occasionally, it affects men. Bulimia nervosa affects every individual physically as well as with the underlying cause in relation with the reaction of being overweight, self image issues, self consciousness and lack of food control. Therefore, bulimia treatment is a significant thing for every person suffering from this psychological disorder, although the complete treatment is bit difficult. Because the sufferer never admits to the problems they are suffering from and develop tendency to hide this eating habit. Getting embarrass is another issue they have but this disease can prove to be extremely hazardous effect to their physical health. If the immediate bulimia treatment is not given to the person, he/she may begin to have problems such as electrolyte imbalance, esophageal tears, cardiac problems, gastrointestinal disorders, stomach disorders and dental problems. In the later stage of the disease it is become difficult for the person to normal functioning and the person become more prone to illnesses and colds. They may also develop more bruising on the surface of skin and may intend to have more broken bones from a simple fall. if anybody would find with this disorder and bulimia symptoms, approach him to obtain bulimia treatment for this as soon as possible.

There are many options of treatments a person suffering from bulimia nervosa can adopt. It includes medications, psychological treatment and support treatments for in patient and out patient, and dental treatments with compulsive exercising. While going through a treatment, person strictly needs put away him/herself from overeating and night eating habits. If any body is suffering from bulimia nervosa, it is important for you to support them in any way otherwise, treatment alone will not going to help them with their problem in any case.

You’ve Got to Keep on Learning

November 13, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” – Henry Ford

This time of year when I see kids walking to and from school, they all have that “it’s almost over” look on their face.  Remember that feeling, songs have been written about school being out for the summer; in fact I can hear you singing it now.

It’s also the time of year we all get that itch to maybe coast a little, maybe it’s the institutionalized years of school/summer schedule or maybe its those agency summer hours beckoning an early Friday.

Whatever it might be for you, now’s the time to push that aside and create a behavior of learning.

Back in March Steffan Postaer, whom I had the chance to work with while we were both at Leo Burnett, wrote two articles about staying young in the business.  I’m paraphrasing but I’m going to take what he said and build on it and talk about learning.

Yep, good old fashioned learning.  It’s something that all of us should keep doing each and everyday as our marketing mediums, tools and even audience continues to evolve.  And it’s happening whether we’re ready or not.

There have been heaps of articles, research, whitepapers and charts about the consumer taking control.  Why?  Because they are learning, it may be one website, widget, application or even device, it doesn’t matter.  What matters is that en masse they are learning, doing and mastering.

“Do or do not… there is no try” -Yoda

As marketers we have to do the same thing, school is never really out for us. In fact the pace has just gotten faster which to me means that learning is even more important.  And just trying isn’t good enough any more; we’ve got to do.

That means embracing the same mediums, tools, and applications that our audience does and embracing them means making them some part of our lives.  Why?  Well it’s darn hard to brainstorm ideas for social networking, widget or micro-blogging and the list goes on, if we don’t participate.

If we don’t participate and learn through experimentation and doing we tend to think about the thing vs. the ideas around it.  I’ve been in way too many brainstorms that started with “let’s do something on facebook,” that’s like saying let’s do something that plays on a tv.

Choose something.  Maybe it is facebook or twitter, heck, get in line July 11 for the new Apple iPhone and start using the new apps, I’m excited about the GPS/location based apps.  Whatever it is, start doing and then do some more.  It is learning after all.

Our business is changing both from within and from without.  You’re reading this or visiting this website because you believe in actively managing your career, or if you don’t, you should.  And managing your career also means jumping into the changing medium that’s going on around us.

Where to start?  Next week I’ve got some suggestions on not only where to start but also strategies on how to get started and sites/tools/widgets to use and keep that learning behavior going.  Until then check out more of my thoughts at hundredfathom.com.
