The Adsense Concept

November 22, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

So what is Adsense and what can it do for me?
Adsense (and other similar advertising solutions from search engines such as Yahoo and MSN) are regarded as being the new method for passive online money making. Adsense provides a way for people with websites of all types and sizes to put up and display relevant Google ads on the content pages of their sites and hence earn money.
Unlike link exchanges and rotating banners, Google Adsense ads relates to what your visitors came to your site to read about each advert that is displayed is specifically tailored to the keyword content of the specific page. This obviously means that you now have a way to improve your sites page content and potentially make some money.
Quite simply Google Adsense gives you the ability to earn advertising revenue from every single page on your website with a minimal investment of your time!
In addition to providing both text and image based adverts (known as ‘Adsense for content’), Adsense has two additional features that you can integrate into your web pages to provide your site visitors with more opportunities to earn you money ‘Adsense for Search’ and ‘Referrals’.
Adsense for Content
Probably the most popular Adsense product, ‘Adsense for Content’ displays ads that are targeted to your sites unique content. Adverts take the form of an Ad Unit, which contains either text ads, image ads or both and Link Units where each link unit displays a list of topics that are relevant to your page.
For a full visual list of Adsense advert styles visit: https://www.google.co.uk/adsense/adformats
So what kind of adverts get displayed on your site? As mentioned before, that’s what sets Adsense apart from the competition you don’t have to decide, Google does it for you!
Adsense always delivers relevant ads that are precisely targeted to each specific page. For example if you had a site dedicated to your pet dog, Google will send you ads for that site or specific page that relate to pet food, dog collars and other dog related products and services.
Adsense for Search
Integrating a Google Search box onto your site not only allows your visitors to search your website but it also provides a quick and easy search tool for surfing the web. As with ‘Adsense for Content the search results produced by your on site search box contain adverts relating to that specific search. When an advert gets click it earns you some more money. In effect and in my opinion, it’s a poor mans site search tool which has the added benefit of earning you some additional revenue.
Referrals
As with many large online organisations and business, promotion is an excellent method of getting new customers and visitors. Google is no exception and through Adsense you can help promote Google whilst also earning some cash.
The referrals section of Adsense gives you the ability to actively promote (on your website or web page) the Google Adsense, Google Adwords, Firefox plus Google Toolbar, Google Pack and/or Picasa (Photo organisation software). In much the same way as Adsense Content, every time a referral link is clicked on your site it earns you some more money.
What you really need to know…
Unlike other banner and link related websites, Google has no strict criteria for acceptance into the Adsense program, and Adsense doesn’t require your site to have a minimum traffic requirement. The only criteria that you must stick to is their strict standard of ‘acceptable content’ requirements which basically means read their terms and conditions before you sign up. Failure of their guidelines would simply mean you’d lose your Adsense account and any raised revenue within it.
Check out www.google.com/adsense/faq for more detailed information.
In the next article I’ll be looking in more detail at ‘Adsense for content’, answering the questions, What can Adsense do for me? What kind of adverts will appear on my site and How do I get started?

Is Google the Best Place to Advertise Your Affiliate Products?

November 20, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

You have a good affiliate product to market, and you want to use pay-per-click (PPC) ads. Good idea or bad? Well, it can be a good idea so long as you control you spending, and track your ads. And the next question is whether Google is the best place to advertise your affiliate products.
Where should you start? Google Adwords, which can be rather costly these days, or Yahoo Search Marketing, or MSN? Or would you be better with some of the minor PPC search engines?
Well, my experience is that the minor search engines generally have unresponsive viewers searching for free stuff. This is also the experience of at least two seasoned marketers I know. In other words, you do not get so many clicks, and few are buyers. Certainly, Google is a better place than these to advertise your affiliate products
Google is good but you could pay too much
Among the others, Google Adwords definitely brings results, but so does MSN, although it has a poor website interface which is a pain to use, and which is usually slow. That is worth putting up with, though, because MSN’s surfers are responsive, and you will pay less per click than with Google. You will not get so many clicks, though, simply because many more people uses Google than MSN.
I have not found Yahoo Search Marketing (that used to be Overture) less profitable than the other two, but that might depend on the product. It is worth trying all three, and you will find that you can get a $50 free start with Yahoo Search Marketing. But be warned: they will still make you deposit some cash with them, but hey, $50 advertising for free cannot be bad.
I would recommend that you use MSN and Google Adwords to advertise your affiliate products.
Whatever you do, though, make sure you set a daily limit, a limit on each bid, and put in a finish date for the ad. Ending the ad project can be a nuisance because if it is profitable, you have to start it all over again with some PPC search engines.
On the other hand, it stops you getting a huge bill for ads you had forgotten where running. A daily limit of $30 does not seem much, but that is $900 a month, and if you have five or six ads for affiliate products running you can soon spend a lot of money if you forget what is going on.

Bing – Importance on Search Engine Optimization

November 20, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

In the search engine wars, Microsoft has been nowhere to be found when it comes to market share.  In fact, they nearly spent over $40 billion to buy Yahoo which is a distant competitor to Google which owns about a 75% market share of searches.  Why?  The search business is very profitable for the companies in the industry and for the companies, hopefully like yours, that show up on the first page of search results because that is where the customer decides who wins and who loses in the battle for their business dollars.  In the latest battle for search engine market share, Microsoft has launched a new search engine called Bing and everyone is reviewing the information.  Search engine optimization is critical for any business because SEO, acronym for search engine optimization, is how your business shows up when a potential customer enters a query on Google, Yahoo, or now Bing.  As you’ve heard me say in other articles, search engines are the yellow pages of today; just the order that your business is found is based on importance and not how much money you’ve spent with that advertiser.  In terms of search engine optimization on Bing, I found our www.nvhost.com websites in similar positions as our sites are found on the other search engines so it wasn’t any different for us – I advise you to do the same testing for your key words to see how you come up in their search results.  What is the consumer reason for Bing and how has it been reviewed so far?  If you visit Bing.com, you will find a link to an explanation of why this new search engine is important for consumers.  It offers the usual rationale that its search results are more reliable or more relevant to consumers but could they really say anything different?  Like MSN, they also have some discussion about how the search engine will provide financial incentives or better deals to visitors.  Unfortunately, those potential incentives have not brought me to use MSN for searches and they will not bring me to Bing either.  In terms of reviews, most “geeks” would rather compliment mass murders than behemoth Microsoft so I don’t put a lot of stock into most reviews because of this lack of objectivity.  In my opinion, Google is still offering a superior search engine product by having search results focused on keywords that can have a local tie in if you are searching for local services – like dry cleaners.  While they aren’t a primary source for the information for me, I also prefer the news sections and how simply they are organized on Google.  The big so what on Bing is that we now have another search engine to check as we make sure to search engine optimize our websites.  Microsoft has very deep pockets and is very willing to launch products while losing money, learn about the consumer product experience, and then make adjustments to gain market share.  This search engine does offer pay per click marketing opportunities but I haven’t had a chance to test their PPC system to offer an opinion on it yet.  Using the 80/20 rule, I typically stick with Google because of their very high market share which means I will reach the most potential customers on one site.  Microsoft has been very focused on Google as their primary competitor in recent years and the attractive PPC revenues will be the reason that Bing will be around and revamped for several years unless Microsoft makes an acquisition in this category.  As a full search web development company that offers website design and search engine optimization services, we will continue to monitor the development of Bing as a search engine to make sure our search engine optimization services and our website design will be friendly to the search engine.  If you have any questions, please visit us at www.nvhost.com and use our live chat feature or contact us form.

Bing Provides Insight into SEO

November 20, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Last week, Microsoft provided insight to webmasters and SEO mavens, giving them a peek behind the curtain at Bing. The new Decision Engine is taking a more direct approach to how users are viewing page rank results, as well as a tighter fist on content scraping than Google currently clinches.

At a glance, Bing’s user interface is much more interesting and effective, when compared directly to Google’s SERPs for the same search terms. It also appears that Bing is utilizing eye-tracking data and heat map results to make themselves more useful. Now that Google has some stiff competition, there may also be variations in how SEO is implemented in order to rank well in Bing.

Currently, there is a trend at Google to extract search results snippets from the content of the result, rather than from description metatags. This does provide more substantial snippets that are more relevant for the user, but some sites aren’t optimized in a way that advocates this new tactic. This is common with product-based, content-light sites with lists of products. These types of sites are having a very difficult time with this new change by Google.

Microsoft is taking an aggressive approach to scraping sites for content. Sites that are upset that search engines are presenting their users with the very best content will not be any happier with Bing. Typically, content-rich websites would out-convert minimal-content websites because they appear to more completely address and answer the problem or question the user may have had. Bing and Google have both changed their search to more reflect this, which has some SEO mavens very hostile towards their coffee mugs.

Microsoft’s Bing Team has given no insight into how their search ranks interpret optimization and are decided: volume of search, quantity of backlinks, anchor texts? Much of the algorithms and spiders are essentially the same from MSN, but nothing has been released to clarify these details. This leads many to believe that Bing was mainly a rebranding move, rather than a completely new and evolved approach to search. It is also believed that Bing is moving at their own speed, and not trying to automate at hyper speed.

Great Blogging Resources – How to Find Information and Ideas

November 19, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

When you are thinking about your blog entry, you may be faced with writer’s block. This is common for most writers – even bloggers. Don’t panic. The good news is that writer’s block always passes. There are a number of great blogging resources that will help you come up with ideas or find information to write your blog entries.

In some cases, it is a good idea to make a list of future blog entries. You should keep a pad of paper and a pen handy at all times. Pay attention to the world around you. When you are surfing the net, be on the lookout for topics that you can blog about. When you are standing in line at the grocery store, again, be on the lookout for blog topics. Make sure you jot these ideas down, or they may be lost forever.

Determine how often you will blog. If you will blog once a week that is 52 blog entries that you will need to write. If you will blog daily, that comes to 365. Try to write that number of topics for future blog entries on your list. That way, when you are stumped, you can refer to your list to find something to write about.

Another common practice for getting ideas for blog entries is to visit other blogs that are related to yours in some way. You aren’t there to copy information, but your blog entry can be based on one of theirs, as long as you provide a Trackback to the other person’s blog entry. This is what makes the blogging community so great! All of the information works together and is connected – allowing us to pass information around at the speed of light! You can also visit websites that are related to your overall blog topic to get ideas.

Of course news websites, such as http://www.cnn.com , http://www.headlinenews.com , http://www.msnbc.msn.com/ , and other such sites are great resources for information and ideas for your blog entries as well. Many bloggers incorporate the daily events of the world into their blogs, and there is no better source than a news website for this information.

Other sites such as Yahoo at http://www.yahoo.com may also give you ideas for your blog entries. Even doing a search on the most popular keywords that have been searched for recently can give you ideas that you can write about.

Once you’ve chosen your topic for your entry, you may need to do some research to find specific facts. There are numerous resources for all kinds of information available for free online. Typically, you can go to any search engine and simply type in a keyword or keyword phrase and find what you are looking for. If you need specific statistics on a given topic, type in the topic followed by the word statistics, and you will find what you are looking for.

Just try to make sure that the information you are writing in your blog is accurate. If you are unsure, simply say that you are unsure. If you are using estimates, make sure that it is clear that it is just an estimate. If you are stating your opinion, make sure that people will understand that this is your opinion, as opposed to actual facts. Nobody wants to be flamed, and we all hate it when we are wrong and somebody points it out! Avoid this by checking your facts, and distinguishing between fact and opinion!

Google vs Bing; Your Best SEO Bet

November 19, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

I got into search engine optimization when Yahoo was king and Google was a gleam in Larry Page’s eye so I’ve had a front row seat to all the big doings. And one thing I can tell you for certain is Microsoft just took off its kid gloves with the release of Bing and is looking for a shot at the reigning champ Google.

This article will show you how to hedge your bet with both contenders and come out a winner while these two Goliaths slug it out.

Round One:

First and foremost make sure you follow the one major rule that will apply to both engines; Content is King!

Although we don’t yet have a clear picture of how Bing will react to all situations we do know that, since it is being touted as the first decision engine, it will focus greatly on quality of content. That said, be ready to make your pages a little longer than you did when optimizing for MSN and be certain the copy reads well.

Round Two:

Great content is not enough. It has to be well written and natural sounding. Anything that sounds like it was written for a search bot will not make it into the top one hundred let alone the top ten.

Round Three:

Still dealing with on page content, you need to carefully consider how many times your keyword is mentioned and where it is found on the page text. Both search engines will not only look for your keywords but also the context in which they are found. It is no longer enough to simply have them sprinkled in the text randomly. Now the keywords need to actually flow in the context of the text as well. This is typically taken care of for you when writing naturally but is definitely worth the extra once over before posting the final page live.

Here is a little formula to help…

1. Use one main keyword and up to two supporting keywords per page.

2. Do not repeat the main keyword more than three times on a page.

3. Do not repeat the supporting keywords more than twice each per page.

4. Try to have at least five hundred words per page.

5. Try to place your main keyword at the beginning, middle and end of the page text while keeping the writing natural and flowing.

Round Four:

Get as many high quality inbound links as possible. You already know this but it bears repeating. Search engines today are about popularity of the individual page returns. Having inbound links from Google authority sites will be more important than ever because any other search engine trying to trump Google will also be checking these stats as well as adding a few of their own.

That said, getting links from just the Google authority sites is not enough. You also want to get links from MSN’s top picks (which are now Bing’s top picks.)

Round Five:

To really hedge your bet, get an early leg up on your competition by becoming proficient in proven SEO software with a good track record on both Google and MSN (The tool at http://www.SEOeliteWeb.com has proven a good pick over the years for its ability to help develop SEO friendly content and locate the most beneficial link partners but there.)

And finally, look for domains for sale that are already ranked well on MSN. This could be the diamond in the rough opportunity of a lifetime for your online business.

By following these simple tips you can outdo ninety nine percent of your competition trying to share in the rewards offered by Google and Bing going head to head.

SEO for Bing and Google: Keywords and where to use them

November 19, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

How/where to place your keywords When the bots/crawlers, whether they be google’s or msn’s, crawl your website they look for the keywords in places where a human reader might expect them.  That means that placement in relevant areas, and tailored to an actual reader is key to good results. If you’re writing an essay or paper, the title will often tell the reader what the article is about right off the bat.  This is similar with the crawlers in that what you say in your tags is weighted more heavily than inside the tags.  Actually, keep that analogy in mind.   Think of your website as an anthology or a collection of pieces of literature(i.e. a book of poems for example).  You have your website’s url which is important in that it is like the name of your anthology.  Now if your anthology’s name was “Poems I Like” versus “The Collected Works of Dr. Seuss”, which do you think would be more specific?. The latter of course, but don’t freak out if your website url doesn’t have some of the keywords you’re trying to attract. It definitely helps though.  I read an interesting article over at Them.pro about Google vs. Bing when it comes to having keywords in your URL. According to their test it does seem that Bing gives more weight to having a keyword in your URL. If your website was about pokemon… when you’re starting off it might be a good idea to have “pokemon” in your url.  You don’t have to have that perfect URL with all the right words… but it helps. Now of course take this with a grain of salt… I recently started a blog that is now number 1 on google for “optimizing bing” … however with Bing… even with both keywords in the url, it’s nowhere to be seen.  There are many more factors to look into as I continue with articles. Moving on … we discussed keywords in title tags… Those are like your book’s titles. What would be the next relevant source of info for finding out the structure of a book? It would probably be chapter names. We can think of these as the h1, h2, etc headers.  Header tags which are direct and help summarize your body text can go a long way with your SEO.According to the Bing Webmasters, the other two relevant places for keywords would be within the “meta tags” and in outgoing links within the <a> tags.  Describing where your link is taking someone is useful in that the crawlers love when you link relevant material.  So if you’re linking to a site that is related to yours using your targeted keywords, those keywords will probably get indexed for your site. Sharing is caring!I think you’re tired of the analogy… and I don’t even want to try and stretch it that far to incorporate those last two. Meta tags could get it’s own article later. Hopefully you get the general idea though.Summary of Important Keyword Locations 1. Keywords in URL 2. Keywords in Page titles 3. Keywords in Body header h1, h2 tags 4. Keywords in Meta Tags 5. Keywords in Outgoing links <a> tagsThings to note… Don’t bother stuffing your tags or these areas with keywords if it has nothing to do with your article.  This is going to help you in the long run if you focus on the content… which is of course king. </p> <div style="margin:5px;padding:5px;border:1px solid #c1c1c1;font-size: 10px"> <div class="text"> <p>I’ll continue writing similar articles for Bing and Google here. As the search engine market grows, so should your SEO campaign to include the new search engines.According to statowl.com, which releases monthly statistics on <a title="search engine ranking" href="http://www.filipsblog.com/tag/search-engine-ranking/">search engine ranking</a> by market share, as of June 09 Google had a 85% market share, followed by Yahoo with a 8% market share, Bing with a 4% market share and 3% market share going to other smaller search engines like AOL, MSN and Ask collectively. These statistics show a small share of the market going to Bing in its first month. Bing is Mircosofts new search engine, setup as Microsofts answer to competing with the powerhouse search engine Google. That said, Microsoft says its early version will be updated over time as they learn more and develop the product. In a calculated decision by Google to not loose more market share to Yahoo or Bing, Google is in its beta testing phase of its new search engine Caffeine. While there is hot debate as to why Google has created a new search engine, one thing is clear, its search algorithm is slightly different from the current Google search engine. In a test to locate Design Lots website in the search results under “Brisbane website design” for all the major search engines as well as Caffeine, I found a good deal of variance between the different search engines. This shows that an effective <a title="Search Engine Optimisation" href="http://www.filipsblog.com/tag/search-engine-optimisation/">Search Engine Optimisation</a> (SEO) campaign will need to take into consideration the different <a title="search engines search" href="http://www.filipsblog.com/tag/search-engines-search/">search engines search</a> techniques to maximise its effectiveness. It also shows that just because your current SEO provider is doing well at getting you good Google ranking doesn’t mean they are thinking much about Bing or Caffeine.Try searching for your business under a relevant keyword phrases (ie Design Lots would be “Brisbane web design” or “Brisbane graphic design”; a bike shop might be “brisbane bike shops” or “Taringa bike shops”). If you can’t find yourself when you are used to being on page one, ask some questions. </p> <div style="margin:5px;padding:5px;border:1px solid #c1c1c1;font-size: 10px"> <div class="text"> <p>Design Lots Creative is a client focused website design, custom web development and graphic design firm.
