Why Social Media Marketing is Now Mainstream

November 20, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

People are recognizing how valuable Social Media Marketing (SMM) is. A health related clients’ book publisher was talking about the importance of social media to the traditional publishing industry. She said they now strategize books that have websites for reference materials and more information, and places where people can host e-books and bookmarked pages from new book releases. SMM is changing the publishing industry.
Just like any marketing campaign, Social Media Marketing (SMM) takes hard work, tracking, which the Internet makes easy, as well as maintenance. And we can easily blend traditional campaign tactics with SMM, including direct-response, branding, or radio spots. First, it is about the objective for the campaign, then comes fine tuning the strategy. The Web offers an ideal way to measure return on investment(SOI).
Many organizations are allowing employees to use social networks for business purposes today; it has increased dramatically to 69% in 2008 from 37% last year. More than six in 10 companies are using social media to build and promote their brands, improve communication and increase consumer engagement. There’s been a fivefold increase in the percentage of employees who are using popular social networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn for business purposes, from 15% in 2007 to 75% this year. 37% of organizations plan to focus communities on specialty areas where they can provide business value. 40% of respondents report using one or more of the following tools: user groups, tags, communities, blogs, social networking and videos. What are some popular tools? Social networks, blogs and wikis, with adoption rates of between 50% and 55%.
What is the future of Social Media Marketing? Just imagine the magnitude of virtual classrooms! Even futurists like James Canton, the author of “The Extreme Future,” has already said that one of the top ten industries of the innovation economy is, education and learning.
In an article written by a professor of computer science at Colorado Technical University named Cynthia M. Calonge, who said, “the benefits outweigh the risks associated with venturing into a virtual world . For me, the virtual world is my preferred learning and teaching environment.”
We will all be seeing more and more people setting up social media networks to engage with customers and students, basically to start conversations and share knowledge. This means that websites need to be filled with content to educate people about what they do. The sites must also be optimized properly with the search engines so that they will come up first on the search engines. And blogs are becomming a way of life. Self publishing IS the future.
The reality is, that the creation of immediate, portable, transferable, on-demand knowledge sources is way bigger than we can even begin to imagine.

Mlm Recruiting-How Important Is Social Media

November 19, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

With the new blast of social media the world is rapidly becoming a small place. We are now able to get in touch with people from all over the world very easily. The network marketing industry is based on recruiting and social media has allowed a person to have access to anyone who has access to a computer. In this way networkers are able to tell the world about their business. This all has had an impact on the MLM industry but just how important is social media to MLM recruiting and how does one use it effectively?

What can you do with social media?

Connect: You can connect on just about any level by using blogs, personal emails, commenting on social pages, and even joining groups. Social media offers gives people a way of connecting with others. Build: Networkers can build new friendships and relationships. This is done by including people in your circle and joining their circle of ‘friends’ which then allows the networker access to all of those people.

Discuss: Talking to people is one of the main advantages of social media. Talking to people that you have met or even people that you barely know lets a networker find out what others want to discuss and to let others know what is on their mind, i.e.; their business. This can be accomplished with blogs, posts, direct messages, notes to people, audio and videos, as well simple emails through the social site.

Podcasts are becoming part of more mainstream thinking as a way to connect and market. As well connecting with video is becoming big in marketing. Video marketing techniques gets the attention of about two-thirds of people.

Peak interest: One can use social media as a way to employ attraction marketing by showing an interest in what others are doing and helping them solve a problem. Listening to what your contacts have to say is important and then one can share new ideas and possibilities that they think are of value.

Even though social media sites are a way to bring free traffic a networker must have a game plan and not just waste a multitude of hours clicking around all the sites. The experts say that spending 1 hour a day on social media marketing is enough and too much more than that is just a waste of time. Social sites are for building a basic relationship and directing people to a solution for their problem, i.e.: your MLM site or product.

One must also familiarize themselves with all the available tools for each site in order to get the most benefit and streamline the social media process. Using social media correctly is important if it is to have any effect on MLM recruiting. Just sending out birthday wishes or irrelevant messages won’t do too much for your business and people are actually becoming a little immune to this. As well, just talking about yourself won’t get a networker very far and will probably just chase people away in the long run. It’s important to actually listen to people and their needs and find people you have things in common with. Once you have found someone that you have something in common with, genuinely engage and talk about commonalities and ways to solve problems.

Bottom line: The MLM recruiting business is about building relationships and social media marketing can help or hurt a business depending on if it is used correctly or not.

Using Social Media to Build Your Online Business

November 18, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Social media is a completely different layer that has been added to the web, hence the web 2.0. Social media is becoming mainstream and in a couple years we won’t even be able to imagine a time when we couldn’t interact with all the screens and mobile content surrounding us. It is indeed a misnomer, but to suggest that the platforms that enable conversations between people and between people and brands are not viable ad opportunities is ludicrous. Social media is all about sharing and connecting. It is the use of technology combined with social interaction to create or co-create value. Twitter is just one of these web 2.0 Twitter is a perfect platform for micro blogging. Allowing you to post comments with just a few words. Ping.Fm another great tool that allows you update your post to all of your social networks at once. Social Social media provides the tools for people to collaborate and get around barriers for communication, build trust. Social Media is a collection of online tools and sites that function on the premise that people are interested in talking to and engaging with other people. The fact is that social media tools differ significantly based on culture, Internet access and online behavior. Community Community members respond quickly to request to test new tools. Community members provide reflections on their activity, which stimulates change within the group. If you use monitoring to discover a real community, perhaps one you didn’t know existed, then you’ve found a treasure trove of real opinions, reactions, reviews, etc. Social Media IS NOT SEO, but search engines DO look kindly upon blog posts/community comments/online noise. Conversation Conversations in these types of communities tend to be regulated by the needs of the community’s creator or sponsors, they are less transparent, and less valuable to the participants at hand. The ability to actually listen in on market conversations made possible by social media will drive a sea change in the market research industry, one that today’s early adopters are starting to understand. When you engage in conversations in social media it may seem overly labor-intensive compared to launching an ad campaign. These networked conversations are enabling powerful new forms of social organization and knowledge exchange to emerge. I can meet many real people and have real conversations, but it will go nowhere if we don’t connect. Relations Social media needs to be all about relationships. Which in business terms, translates to turning relationships into clients or resources. Most association executives and show producers have realized that relationship building is their greatest priority, few have tapped into the power of social media or adopted a practical plan to incorporate these solutions. Some companies will be hard pressed to understand that its more about relationships and intangible aspects of SM rather than the numbers. Social Media is not just another media. Social media is defined by the act of sharing content in and between social networks regardless of the content type….. It’s not just for kids and geeks – Twitter is good for Business too!

5 types of business that should be using Twitter

They’re all talking about it – the online phenomenon for 2009. Forget Google, forget Facebook and don’t even mention Yell.com – Twitter is where it’s at this year!

Founded in 2006 as a way to let fellow members know “what you are doing”, Twitter has expanded way beyond its founders wildest dreams.

2009 is the year Twitter has become more “mainstream”. This has been helped by celebrities such as Stephen Fry, Ashton Kutcher and Jonathan Ross espousing its virtues but also by the number of businesses out there realising the marketing and promotional capabilities of Twitter.

However it’s usually when I talk to potential clients about using Twitter as part of their social media marketing, I hear:

“It’s just for kids and geeks”

“Only IT and Marketing bods make money from it”

and other such comments.

With this in mind, here are a random 5 industries, each with 5 ways they could use Twitter to promote their business:

1) HOTELS

Twitter is fast paced, instant communication, ideal for the hotel & hospitality industry.

Hotels could:

- Communicate last minute offers – Use Twitpic to show pictures of rooms – Post customer testimonials – Request feedback from guests

DM Bonus – If your guests have Twitter, why not DM them a special Twitter code if they eat dinner in the hotel?

2) PHOTOGRAPHERS

While Twitter is seen mainly as a textual medium, it can be visual too.

Photographers, why not:

- Use Twitpic to post a “picture of the day” – Tweet about the photo shoot you’re doing today, so people get a feel for your scope – Post links to your blog/website – Use TwTQpon to offer free studio time (specify purchase of X photos) – Ask satisfied customers to retweet the link to their pic(s) in your portfolio

DM Bonus – If your customers are on Twitter, DM them the link to thier pictures on your password protected server, or private group on Flickr/Facebook etc.

3)ASTROLOGIST

It’s not always easy to get people to sign up to a mailing list on a website if you’re in a very niche industry, but it’s a lot easier to get followers on Twitter.

- Use Hootsuite to run 12 daily horoscope accounts – one for each star sign – Post details of astrologically important days/dates/events – Offer a free reading for every 50th follower – ask people to retweet – Post testimonials from satisfied clients – Post celebrity horoscopes on a weekly basis

DM Bonus – Offer free 140 character descriptions of each star sign – have them ready to cut and paste. Offer them by DM only. (People have to follow you to get DM’s)

4) HOLIDAY RESORT/GUESTHOUSE

If SEO is too competitive and too costly, try Twitter – the only cost is your time, and even that can be minimal!

- Use 12 second TV to post short video testimonials filmed on an iPhone or similar – Use Twitpic to post pictures of your resort – Post about local traditions/holidays/etc – Tweet last minute special offers/prices – Use TwtQpon to offer money off local/on site restaurants/bars

DM Bonus – Guests on Twitter? DM them to let them know they can check in.

5) SPEAKERS

It might be written communication, but I know a few speakers doing very well from Twitter, so if you’re a speaker, why not:

- Post links to audio files of you speaking – Autofeed your calender/blog into your Twitter account so people know where you’re speaking – Post a “tip of the day” each day, related to your speciality – Use 12 second TV to post short clips of you speaking then link to the longer version on youtube/your website – Use Twitter search to find people talking about your speciality/niche – ask them if they can introduce you to people wanting speakers

DM Bonus – Offer a free ebook / whitepaper / mention on your website by DM only. The only way to get it is to follow you so you can DM them.

So there you have it – 5 types of business that should be using Twitter, and 5 things they can use it for.

The Increasing Popularity Of Twitter

November 10, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Twitter.com seems to be hogging all the social networking and web 2.0 news these days. Every other day, one reads/hears something or the other about Twitter in the newspaper or on TV. Ashton Kutcher and Oprah have taken Twitter to the mainstream. Oprah has already interviewed the Twitter bosses on her show and tweeted for the first time on the show. Now, she already has over a million followers who read every tweet of hers. Ashton Kutcher, the hollywood actor already has over two million followers. He is known to post witty and funny Twitter posts which everyone likes to read.Dell computers has done over $2 million in sales from their Twitter only deals. They post special deals in their tweets. Isn’t this something new? Two years back, no one would have thought of something like this. Some airlines like Jetblue have started interacting with passengers via Twitter. People who have garnered many hundred followers have started selling ad space. On the background image of their profile, any image advertisement can be displayed for a certain period. One or two companies have begun ad agencies on these lines. Twitter.com has been experiencing the fastest growth these days because everyone worth their salt is jumping on the bandwagon. Many many websites have started to offer something or the other for the community of users. Some are offering custom Twitter backgrounds for a price, while some are doing it for free. There are sites offering picture uploading, url shortening, creation of polls, desktop apps, mobile apps, etc. Someone has also connected a few plants with wires, and now plants have also started tweeting. Can you believe it? The funny part is that the main website itself has no advertisements. They aren’t generating any revenues, at least it looks like that. But the company is still valued around a billion dollars. It has been in the top hundred websites of the world since a long time now. Lets wait and see where the phenomenon leads us.

Twitter- Why Has It Succeeded?
Why should Twitter succeed? Facebook and Myspace were already there with many other social networks competing for eyeballs. Throw in social bookmarking sites and we thought that nothing more was needed as far as online networking was concerned. But then came Twitter and changed all the equations. It made everyone rush to see what was happening on twitter and why.I think that the limit of 140 characters gave a unique appeal to twitter in the beginning. It is like- you use a soap because of its perfume and not because it washes well! Because of the limit in characters, there was no way one could write something that was confusing. Nobody had the time to read long posts on the blogs anyway. So twitter saved all of us from boring and lengthy conversations on blogs. We could open our page and see what was new quickly. So with Twitter if you follow somebody, you are immediately told about what the other person wants to say. Please read further in part two of this article series.

The Evolution of Micro Blogging in Twitter

November 10, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Micro blogging in Twitter is one of the best assets that the emerging social networking site has. Micro blogging is a form of multimedia blogging that allows users to send brief text updates or micromedia such as photos and audio clips. They are published can either be viewed by anyone or any group that is chosen by the user. Now, this feature of Twitter is one of the most admired one since it facilitates every user’s task of blogging and sending updates.Twitter didn’t really started out as hot as they are today. The fad/trend that they are now were built through the efforts from certain technological precursors. The term microblog came into greater usage or mainstream because of Tumblr and Twitter. The second one is the most popular among vast list of micro blogging sites being developed in from the past years. In a quest to become the best social networking site, Twitter developed their website by adopting and applying the culture of IRC, IM and SMS. These three were the roots of development in micro blogging.IRC or Instant relay chat came into existence in 1988, invented by Jarkko Oikarinen. It was the forerunner to instant messaging tools such as Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk. The IRC community developed a rich language of protocols using special characters to provide instructions from writers to readers. Examples of this protocols are namespace channel and directed message. Twitter is currently studying of the chances to give credit to a tweet being written that was first posted by another twitterer.Next culture that Twitter adopted is the IM or instant messaging. This taught the new generation of internet users to chat with their friends in real time. It is the “in-the-moment” communication subculture. Instant messaging has been of the most useful and most admired features of social networking sites since the day it was launched. Except from friend’s status message, availability of IM keep each parties updated and connected. The last one to complete the puzzle is the SMS or Short Message Service. Internet and mobile phone come as one. This is called the mobile phone revolution. This became an innovative feature of many social networking sites, like Twitter. SMS is one of the applications in Twitter that has a large market. Mobile phone revolution on the internet gave answer to the great reliance on mobile phones and the call to make communications more convenient. Texting became a legitimate use for a mobile phone and soon became as popular a means of communication as simply talking into the mouthpiece. The maximum length of an 8-bit data message is a familiar 140 characters, which gave rise to the signature constraint of Twitter. With Twitter combining all these communication culture, micro blogging is now on its finest. But expect this, after some few years, micro blogging will have a new face. Something that will make convenient multimedia blogging more convenient.

How to Use Twitter: Make Friends and Money With Twitter

November 5, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Making money with Twitter is not difficult, and while everybody wants to know how to use Twitter properly very few do. Yes, you can log on and tweet, but do you really know how to use it? Do you know how to attract the followers that you want, or how to choose the tweeters that you want to follow?

Most people are happy having as many followers as possible, but why are they following you? Why do people who don’t have a clue who you are want to follow you? Unless you can answer questions such as these then you do not know how to use the site, let alone how to make friends and money from Twitter.

That’s right – make money! It is possible to make money with Twitter by using it as it can be used, but you have to know how to do that. Twitter can be used to drive masses of traffic to your blog, Squidoo lens or website. There is nothing illegal about it, and Twitter will not throw you off: in fact they will welcome it. The reason for that is that the owners want it to be as popular as possible and to have as many Twitter users and followers as they possibly can get.

Part of that might be due to reported bids for Twitter from Rupert Murdoch, Apple and Facebook, and perhaps even Google: obviously the busier and more popular the site is then the higher its value. However, a lot has also got a lot to do with pride, and the more uses to which people can put the site then the less it will be known as a one trick pony, useful only for short tweets but nothing else.

If it becomes a useful means of internet marketing, and can be extended into a mainstream income earner, then Twitter will assume a new dimension and not only increase its value but also its reputation as a more solid WEB2 site and not just a bit of frippery on the periphery of real internet marketing entities. You can make money with Twitter, mainly by using it as a marketing tool to drive traffic to your blog or website. You can also use Twitter to send visitors to your MySpace, Facebook or YouTube pages and any other web presence that you have such as your Squidoo lens.

Anybody can do it, not only the experienced internet marketers, and if you have an idea that you can sell, or even a physical product that you want to promote, then there are ways to do that extremely effectively using the application – but first you have to understand how to use Twitter for more than just tweeting.

What you need is good professional instruction, not only on how to make friends and communicate, but also how to make money with Twitter. Not many are doing so right now, but if you feel that this is a growing medium, of which there is absolutely no doubt, then you must make sure that you don’t miss the boat. You can use Twitter without spamming, and without annoying any of the other tweeters that use it.

In fact many might want to join you, since they will learn a lot more about this fabulous communications technique than they do right now. Once you understand how Twitter can be used to the maximum of its potential then you can pass that information on free if you want.

First, however, you have to understand the basics of Twitter. You might believe that you know all there is to know, but don’t be silly! Nobody knows that, not even me, and I know a heck of a lot. Nevertheless there is still a lot to be learned, and you should start learning right now before you get left behind.
