How to Grow Your Business Slowly

December 19, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Caught you with the title, didn’t I? Chances are, you don’t want your business to grow slowly. No, you want fireworks, and a little animated line that shows profits going through the roof.
That’s all well and good, provided this is your third or fourth successful business. If this is your first business, you may need to take it slow. Why? Because there are mistakes that are waiting to bite you. You may not be properly prepared to handle what is coming down the pipe, even if it something grand, like a $100,000 contract.
With this in mind, I’m going to lay out a couple of mistakes to avoid, and a few systems you will need in place.
Common Capital Killers…
The first mistake everyone seems to make, is their need for an office. Unless you are selling a product that requires a fair amount of foot traffic, do not go out and lease, rent, or otherwise procure an office outside of your home.
Multiple friends of mine have done this very thing, and it has eaten into early profits. If you have an office, then you will want a phone system. If you have a phone system, then you will need to purchase internet service. Occupying an office is an easy way to spend $700-$1100 a month for which you will get nothing in return. If you have a spare bedroom, with some decent used office furniture and lighting, it will be more than sufficient. In the beginning, it won’t be a huge inconvenience to meet a client at their office. They would probably prefer that you come to them.
The second mistake I see is a problem along the same line. People immediately feel the need to upgrade their transportation, at the worst possible time. This is especially tempting to people who are in sales. Never spend good money on image maintenance. Your business is young.
If you already have a car payment, buy a magnetic panel that has your business phone number and name, and stick it on. In some cases, that may qualify you to write off some, or all of your car payment as advertising. Check with your accountant on that one, as certain guidelines have to be met for consideration as a legal deduction.
Accounting and Legal considerations…
Speaking of an accountant, you should have a good one, and use him as little as is humanly possible(at least in the beginning). If you can, learn to use a basic invoicing/accounting program, like Quickbooks. That will save you a fair amount of money. If you aren’t great with books, or have more complicated financial transactions, then you may need to hire a part-time bookkeeper to enter transactions, and make sure everything is ship-shape.
Legal issues are another fun area. Whether or not you hire a lawyer will depend a great deal on the industry you are in. I would recommend LegalZoom for standard legal documents. Basic contracts, scope-of-work documentation, and non-disclosure agreements are pretty standard from state-to-state. Do buy a template from someone like LegalZoom. Don’t download the first free one you find, and modify it for your purposes. You never know what you are missing in the fine print. While legal fees can kill you, they can also keep you from unnecessary lawsuits and expenditures. Pay for it now, or pay for it later…with interest.
With regard to keeping legal records, I prefer to converse via email, rather than verbally. In this manner, I can have a written record of the conversation and agreements, rather than a flimsy, verbal contract. In addition, make sure you have purchase order, or a signed contract for any invoice you issue. Properly documented transactions can save you thousands in legal fees, and lost profits. Again, accountants and lawyers are people you don’t want to see in the “expense” column every month.
What about hiring employees?…
This can carry a huge, legal burden, depending upon their legal classification. As a small business, your best bet is to hire a 1099 contractor, rather than a full-time W2 employee. Why? Hiring a W2 employee immediately makes you responsible for paying equal parts of Social Security and Medicare tax. Depending upon the number of employees who are classified as W2, you may be required to pay for workman’s compensation insurance, along with Unemployment insurance premiums. In some cases, it is not legal to classify workers as 1099. There are 20 questions that the department of Labor asks to qualify someone as a contractor. If you have any questions, you should call the US Department of Labor, before hiring for a position.
What about advertising and a website?…
Both of these sections go hand in hand. Start by getting your company listed with Google, Yahoo, and Bing Local. You’ll have the upper hand when someone searches for “rocking chairs in Boston”. Post pictures of your product, company, hours of operation, and services. It’s simple, and easy.
If you want a website, I would recommend a service like Dreamhost(at $10 a month for hosting), and installing Wordpress. For a theme, I would recommend Thesis, which is infinitely customizable. If you aren’t comfortable with setting up something of this nature, then call a local web design firm. It shouldn’t cost you very much for a basic website, and it will be a worthwhile investment.
Stay away from the Yellow Pages. In most cases, it is not worth the investment, either from a web standpoint, or in return on investment spent. If you are going to spend money, spend it on a service like Google Adwords, where you can track your return on investment.
Yes, if you want the most profitability in this area, you will have to learn how to use such systems. There is no path around it. The business will grow faster, if you learn how to use the internet as a marketing system.
With regard to offline advertising, do it in ways that cost you little or nothing. Barter services with a print shop for flyers. Talk to a local pizza company, and see if they will deliver your flyer with their pizza (for a small fee, of course). Be creative, be imaginative, and expand the definition of your business and how it relates to customers.
What About Customers…
Ah, yes. Revenue generation. This is why I call it growing your business slowly. Unless your business is in a huge growth area, the first client is going to be the hardest to get. The second will be a little bit easier. On from there. While you can get leads more quickly through the internet, the easiest way to get a new customer is a referral from an old customer. Do quality work, sell a quality product, provide a quality service.
Oh, Come On…
Yeah, I know, you signed up to hear some buzzword from the business gurus. Some Jedi mind trick that will make everyone pay you good money. Honesty, quality, and thrift will make your business grow. There are no shortcuts. So listen up, take the advice to heart, and prepare to grow…slowly at first, and then exponentially.

How To Advertise On The Internet

December 14, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Advertising is a branch of marketing that is tasked at inducing the public to buy, use or patronize the product or service being provided by the company. It is a call to action in the form of an announcement either visual or text that is usually placed where the potential customers or users of the products or services are located.
There are different types of advertising, you may use one or all of them. Depending on the need of your entity, you may spend depending on the return you expect from advertising.
You will likewise need to test your advertisements to ensure that you are only using the advertising medium that will be beneficial to your product or service.
The different types of advertising
Paid Advertisements
Print Advertisement, usually in broadsheets, magazines and newsletters.
Radio Advertisements
Television advertisements
Billboard advertising
Less costly advertisements
Word of mouth advertising, existing clients or customers who are happy with your product or service usually invite their friends to try the product. This is the cheapest form of advertising. It is one of the most effective forms of advertising and is very profitable.
Online advertisements, usually advertising in the internet is cheaper as compared with traditional advertisements. The cost is usually only time and internet connection. Of course, this is if you only advertise through text or articles that will induce customers to buy your products.
Some larger products manufacturers on the internet endeavor to use affiliates to promote their products or services. In this case, you will need to pay them commissions. This is manageable because you can enter many forms of affiliate programs either pay-per-click, or pay-per-sale.
While you will need to advertise your products or services, there are other more effective promotional campaigns you can do to ensure that customers will come craving for your products.
Advertising is only one part of the marketing pie, do not think that because you are spending hugely on advertisement, you can seatback and wait for the buyers to come in. This is not going to happen. The competition is very stiff; you have to offer the public something perceived to be greater than the value they will need to pay for your products or services. This is the most effective marketing strategy you can ever endeavor to take.
Advertising is effective if done correctly, because there are many different methods of advertising your products or service, you may need to test all of them. When you find the most effective advertisement for your product, you may drop the others but be sure to be active on the internet because advertising on the internet will provide you with unlimited geographical presence.

5 Reasons Friends in Your Social Media Networks Do Matter

November 20, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

To those of us who use social networks frequently, or are familiar with the way the social web works, this post will seem self-evident.
However, in conversations with a couple clients and individuals lately who are unfamiliar with social media marketing, this question has consistently cropped up.
The main problem people have is reconciling making friends with possible ROI.
What you need to know is that by adding friends or accepting friend requests, you are taking one more step to building your authority and visibility in your industry, which WILL lead to ROI (in the form of traffic, sales conversions or whatever your goal) as people recognize you as a leader in your field and choose you over possible competitors for services and products they need.
Here are 5 general, point-by-point reasons friends matter on social networks:
1. Relationship building.
The whole reason social networking is successful is because its very foundation is built on creating and maintaining relationships with people.
Start conversations, introduce yourself, do everything you can to put yourself out there and meet as many people as possible.
If you like the person or company you’ve built a relationship with, you’ll probably recommend them to your friends, and vice versa.
If you make friends with someone in a related industry, you’ll benefit from recommending their services to your clients, and they’ll benefit from recommending you to theirs (e.g. a web designer recommends a social media marketer they like, a Realtor recommends a mortgage provider they know is honest and effective, and vice versa).
2. Referrals and recommendations.
You matter to me, and I matter to you, because if I like that really cool video you sent me, I’ll visit the site its from to look for more.
If I digg that awesome article and send it to my friends, or they see I dugg it, they might check it out too. If I get an awesome deal on this website’s service, I’m going to send you there.
Or if I hear from you about it, I’m going to go there. If I find a fan page for a product I love, I might stop by, create a profile, and add myself as a fan, then tell all my friends about it.
You do the calculations.
3. Access to more user info.
Many sites hide people’s profiles until you add them as a friend. Thus, adding someone as a friend is a good way to communicate with them in a more personal setting.
4. UGC, or User-Generated Content.
The more friends you have and interact with, the more content is produced on your site or page, and the more visible it becomes.
If you have a ton of people talking on your Facebook fan page, for example, all that content is adding to your area’s ability to be ranked on the search engines AND attract more users.
5. A large social community.
The more people you add as friends and the more you get to know them, and they you, the more popular you or your social networking profile becomes.
Soon, you have a large community of supporters that further reinforces your authority and leader status in your industry.
What better way to brand your company and communicate a specific message to a mass of people?

How to Stop Binge Drinking On Your Own

November 20, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Although it is true that there are numerous people, especially the teenagers who are ready to know about how to stop binge drinking, the truth remains that only the people that go forward and use the suggestions contained in this piece of writing will be able to stop binge drinking. To put in another way, numerous persons just go through a lot of articles such as this one but they don’t utilize the tips discussed. If you are one of these folks, I advise you to end reading now. Reading further will not do you any good. But I urge you to read this expose to the end if you are really decided about giving up on this problem.

One of the things you must do in order to stop binge drinking is to have a tough desire. Without this, all your attempt to quit alcoholic beverages will be powerless. A durable intention borne out of being infuriated with your present way of life is really needed before you can defeat this difficulty. It is usually said that you can drive a horse to the river but you cannot compel it to drink the water. It all depends on the horse. The horse will not drink except she is thirsty, truly thirsty. The same thing applies to you. Nobody in the globe can stop you from binge drinking if you don’t want. Remember, where there is a will there is a way.

However, you must not stop at that level. You must take some extreme steps along with your desire in order to successfully stop binge drinking. This is where countless persons, especially young ones miss it and are not able to pull out of the trouble. And in their pain, they yell it is no use endeavoring to stop. No, you are mistaken. When you take decisive steps like removing alcoholic beverages from your residence and company, cutting your ties with friends that like binge drinking and avoiding gatherings that support binge drinking. These steps will go a long way to help you triumph over the trouble of binge drinking. Countless folks like you have successfully stop. You can too!

Knowing how to stop binge drinking is not the only answer to the trouble. You must use the suggestions offered in this expose before you can win the fight against alcoholic drinks. If you need to look at it again to be familiar with the steps that will get you off, I exhort you to do so at once.

That’s all of the Twitter about?

November 17, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

By now if you are not a user of Twitter, you have at least heard of it. It has experienced an almost unbelievable growth in its short lifetime. Twitter is a micro-blog that anyone can participate in. Each post, a tweet, is limited to 140 characters. That’s not very long so it’s pretty easy to read a lot of posts. Twitter asks the question “What are you doing?” Some people actually use it this way… you will see things like “brushing my teeth” or “going to bed” or “eating.” However, most use it to communicate things that they consider more important than those mundane examples.

There is a lot of good and worthwhile information flowing on Twitter every hour of every day. So much, in fact, it’s a bit difficult to keep up with. There is also a surprising number of celebrities (politicians, stars, athletes) using Twitter. You can follow them all and see what they are saying. Even Barack Obama is there, and I believe he is the most followed player.

You follow anyone you want, and people follow you. Of course the more people you follow, the more tweets you will be exposed to, and the harder it will be to develop relationships with your Twitter “friends.” You have the option to communicate privately with a friend (a follower that you are following) by using the Direct Message, or DM feature. All other postings are visible to everyone, but mostly to those following you.

Twitter is so new (started mid 2006) that appropriate Twitter etiquette and protocol is just developing. It is clear that many people have likes and dislikes about what others say and/or do. It seems that the majority of users dislike being contacted automatically with a DM. This is a fairly common practice when saying welcome to new followers, except they don’t like the automatic message because it’s not personal. This can get the relationship off to a bad start. In addition, many don’t like Twitter being used for commerce but I seriously doubt that will stop. Marketers will market where they can if it brings in business. The marketing I see personally does not bother me. Remember it’s limited to 140 characters and real easy to just skip the tweet.

So, should you get involved with Twitter? Why not? It’s going to be here for awhile and it’s growing. About one year ago there were 600,000 users and now the number is somewhere north of 6 million. Twitter subscriber numbers are doubling every month. I say you better jump on now while there is still room. I should warn you though, it can be addicting!

Happy Tweeting!

How to Stop Binge Eating With Challenges, Part 2

November 17, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

6. Challenge yourself to bite off more than you can chew, while learning how to spit.

Decide that you will stop your struggle with binge eating disorder.  Instead of expecting to change overnight, remind yourself that it will take time, effort, and patience.  The goal of overcoming binge eating is a big one – Know that and never forget it.  It’s going to be difficult, but when you take it step-by-step, it is easier.

Don’t set yourself up for failure by expecting to change so much at once.  Taking it step-by-step will be more successful than you think.

Figure out little things you can do daily, weekly, or monthly to help build a strong foundation underneath you.  Start journaling.  Talk to friends.  Go for walks.  Fight the urge to binge.  Step outside of your comfort zone.

All of these things will add up and produce big results.  You just have to take it one step at a time.

7.  Challenge yourself to be the person you dream of being.

What kind of person do you dream of becoming when you are binge-free?  What does that person look like?  How does that person act?  What does that person do instead of binge eating?

Write down all characteristics of the person you desire to be.  Don’t leave anything out.  Write down the types of people you will be friends with and what you will talk about.  Write down how you will dress.

Just be sure to see yourself as the person you can be without binge eating.  Make sure to leave that out and challenge yourself to think about how your life would be when binge eating is not a part of it.

8.  Challenge yourself to fall in love with your quirks, flaws, and imperfections.

You cannot be a perfectionist while binge eating.  It just doesn’t work and probably leads to more bingeing.  Instead of finding and obsessing over your flaws, quirks, and imperfections, learn how to use them to your benefit.  Learn how to love yourself and embrace the qualities that you have that might be different than others.

After all, being different is what sets you apart from everyone else… and isn’t that something to be happy about?  How boring would our world be if we were all the same?

If we all had the same facial features…

If we all were skinny and looked the same…

If we all had the same bone structure…

If we all believed the same thing…

If we all enjoyed doing the same thing…

Remember, it’s our differences that make the world go ‘round.  Rejoice in your differences and find a different angle on your quirks so that you can start to love them.

9.  Challenge yourself to learn something new, do it well, and show it off.

When you learn something new and do it well, your mind opens up to other possibilities.  You will not become stagnant in doing just what you know.  You will step out of your comfort zone and this will do wonders for your self-esteem.    As you know, when you improve your self-esteem, you will feel better about yourself, which will help you believe in the fact that you can overcome binge eating disorder.

10.  Challenge yourself to have outrageous amounts of fun.

This is a fun one!  I mean, who doesn’t like to have fun, right?

Try to add some fun in your life everyday and see how this will affect your total self.  I bet you will be happier and will laugh, instead of feeling sorry for yourself and wondering why you are still bingeing.  You need to have some fun!

When you have fun, it makes you feel good.  When you feel good, you automatically feel better about yourself, regardless of what is going on.  It’s an instant booster for your mood, no matter what.  And, when you feel better about yourself, you might want to keep that attitude for as long as you can, which would mean having no reason to binge.

When you are having fun, you aren’t not going to think like “Wow, this is so fun… Maybe I should binge and totally destroy my mood.”  No!  Instead, you will feel so good about yourself and you’ll want to keep those good feeling going for as long as you can.

How To Subscribe to Twitter RSS Feed

November 10, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

RSS is short for “Really Simple Syndication.” This is a simple online mechanism that permits you to read all your favorite web content on one page. For example, consider a blog that you like. You would like to visit it everyday to see if the blogger has updated it. You can simply subscribe to the RSS feed of that blog and read the blog contents on your RSS feeder.

Subscribing to RSS feeds enables you to find out whether a blog or website has been updated or not without having to visit it. You can read the contents of several blogs and websites from a common page.

Twitter’s RSS Feed

Twitter’s profile page, home page, replies page, and public timeline page have RSS feeds. When you are viewing one of these pages, you might have noticed RSS buttons in the page’s sidebar or browser. If you want to track the contents of the page without having the sign in to Twitter every now and then, you can just subscribe to their RSS feeds.

Twitterfeed

Twitter does not have any application enabling users to update their tweets through an RSS feed. However, smart API users have designed an app called Twitterfeed. This app automatically sends any update you make on your blog to Twitter. All you have to do is enter your blog’s feed url, input the number of times you tweet. Your Twitter friends will be able to view these announcements. You can access Twitterfeed at http://www.twitterfeed.com/

Twitter RSS Feed

Would you like to read the updates on Twitter without logging in? Then you want to subscribe to Twitter’s RSS feed. Check the sidebar of a public profile page on Twitter. You will soon locate the RSS feed button just beneath the pictures of the Twitter users you are following. Now, click on the button and subscribe to it and soon you will be able to read the latest updates on a feed reader without having to log into Twitter.

Your browser’s url field also has the RSS feed button. When you click on this icon, you will be asked to subscribe to this feed. Click on the subscribe button, and you will be able to read all the updates in your feed reader.

Public Twitter Pages

Public Twitter pages, for example a public profile page, can be accessed even by people who do not have Twitter accounts. They simply have to subscribe to the page’s RSS feed and read the updates on their feed reader. In order to respond, however, they need to create a Twitter account
