Binge eating affects about one in every 50 people in the United States. But even though it is the most common eating disorder in the U.S., it does not receive as much publicity as similar maladies, like bulimia, anorexia, and depression. As a result, there is still quite a social stigma attached to binge eating, leaving many of its sufferers feeling isolated and hopeless. However, it is important to realize that there are steps you can take to stop the cycle of binge eating.
The first thing you must do is to determine if your problem constitutes binge eating. It’s common for people to head for the pantry or the refrigerator on occasion to reduce stress or unwind. But if you find yourself repeating this process constantly, or if you tend to do so to fill a void or escape your problems, then you are likely turning to food as your main solution for dealing with tension.
These “emotional eating” tendencies are a major component of binge eating. Also, binge eaters often feel that they cannot control the amount of food they eat during these emotional eating episodes. They also feel powerless to stop eating, even when it makes them feel sick. Because binge eating is usually accompanied by feelings of shame, sufferers often eat in secret, and even hide food from others because they feel embarrassed about their level of food intake. But the most common indicator of binge eating is the inability to think about anything other than food.
Even though the disorder is called binge eating, its underlying issues have less to do with food and more to do with how you feel when you eat. A person who suffers from binge eating might act normally during a social situation where food is involved; but when he or she is alone, the pace of eating may increase dramatically. While it is common to be concerned about your weight, binge eaters tend to be more obsessive and desperate when it comes to weight loss and dieting. Binge eaters often do not stop eating when they are “full,” but will continue until they feel uncomfortably “stuffed” or “bloated.” Similarly, these individuals may consume food even when they do not feel hungry. And the concept of “meal time” is frequently unimportant to binge eaters because they eat continuously throughout the day.
However, the most powerful effects associated with binge eating can be found on an emotional level. During and after binge eating episodes, sufferers may feel depression, guilt, embarrassment, or even disgust. Many people even report feeling numb or being on “autopilot” while binging on food. And no matter how much food is consumed, binge eaters may not ever feel satisfied — even when they eat themselves to the point of sickness.
Unlike more high-profile addicts, such as alcoholics or drug abusers, binge eaters cannot practice complete avoidance of their vice. So they must adopt a strategy of learning to change their relationship with food. The first step in that process is to learn about and practice smart eating habits that focus on meeting your nutritional needs instead of your emotional ones. There are a host of sources that can inform you about calorie counts, portion sizes, and nutritional details to help you plan a diet that is healthy and appropriate.
This strategy applies not only to meals, but also to snacks and desserts. However, you should try to avoid fad diets and shortcut weight-loss techniques, because they have the potential to make you hungry or tense and push you back into binge eating.
Once you formulate an eating plan, eliminate the temptation to overeat by throwing out or giving away the unhealthy foods you tend to seek out during binge eating episodes. Then try to find a simple and fun type of exercise that you can perform on a regular basis. Not only will this help you lose weight, but the natural mood-boosting chemicals released during exercise will improve your outlook and reduce stress. In addition to exercise, look for other techniques or activities to lower your stress level, such as reading, meditation, or massage. The less stress you are saddled with, the less likely you are to turn to food to relieve it.
Though medical experts have not yet isolated the root cause of binge eating, physicians have developed strategies and regimens to treat it. So if you are unable to defeat binge eating with lifestyle changes alone, ask your doctor about alternatives. He or she may recommend different types of therapy to help you change your behaviors, identify the triggers associated with binge eating, and learn the skills to defeat them.
There are also support groups and medications that can help with binge eating. Most importantly, you should know that binge eating is not a permanent condition that you have to suffer through. On the contrary, you have the power to take steps to eliminate binge eating and improve your physical and emotional health.

You probably have asked this question before.
Or maybe twice.
I know I did several years ago-until the “light went on” and I discovered some things that proved to be worth millions in business.
But just what IS branding in social media and how do you participate in it?
Branding is a marketing technique, strategy, method, or action that has the massive potential to elevate your online and social media business to the top. It involves helping your customers every time they think of you to form a recognizable association -mental , emotional, or other-with you.
What can you do to make that happen?
Link your business with a powerful and unique design, logo, slogan, and/or color and observe the positive results and imaging that starts to take place in people’s minds.
It is critical that you take the brnading efforts to a new level and understand that there are 3 things that people look for in branding:
1) What they are FEELING.
Branding is all about emotion and feelings when it comes down to it. Either it feels RIGHT, or it does not. And if it does not, then your brand will be extinct before too long.
2) What people are SEEING on the video screen in their mind.
What picture does the prospect SEE in their mind when they think of your brand? What emotions does that elicit? Is it a picture that you want them to see?
3) What are they EXPECTING.
What is the prospect EXPECTING to happen or experience with your brand? This is critical because your brand must be consistent as well as credible.
Brands create a feeling of recognition, remembrance, and familiarity.
If customers have seen your logo or meme, insignia, or company name, they are more likely to continue to consistently select your product or service. Also, they are more apt to refer and suggest them to others. Referrals through word of mouth can be an extremely powerful form of advertising and it can build your brand and accelerate it.
A brand helps possible customers remember your business as well as the emotions surrounding it. (Nike). People may know little about your life and business philosophy or reputation. However, if they can recognize your brand, the chances are greater that they will do business with you.
Branding creates memory in the mind of the public. we call it “Memory magnet.” Your brand must draw people towards you and your message and product every time they think of it.
When the public remembers your brand and familiarizes themselves and others with it, they will come back. Customers are more likely to remain devoted to your business and are apt to buy further products or services from you based on the brand of the initial product with which they had success.
This called building a book of business you can count on.
People are willing to pay more for products or services that they highly regard. This means that customers are likely to pass up cheaper prices with competitors if your brand has made a positive impression on them. If clients believe in your product, they will pay for it.
That is why you need to brand yourself as the “Premier Provider” in your niche and market, so you can charge what your brand is really worth.
When you have distinguished and set yourself and your business apart through branding, the marketing has the capability of becoming so profound, that little else is necessary. Developing your brand takes time and effort, but after it has been solidified, and after customers have had the chance to identify with it, your sales can increase naturally. Moderation can be more difficult to learn and practice than abstinence. The first step, especially if you are overweight or obese, is to see a physician. Your doctor will perform an exam so that any physical issues can be addressed during recovery. Your doctor will probably recommend that you also consult with a nutritionist to develop an eating plan. Serious binge eaters may elect to go into treatment. There are facilities throughout the world that specialize in treating eating disorders. There is a magic question that you can ask yourself when you are about to reach for the last cookie in the box, finish the macaroni and cheese on your son’s plate, make a beeline for the refrigerator mindlessly, or pick at the desert that your husband is indulging in. This inquiry can help you to break the binge habit instantly. It is very simple, but extremely effective. The question is: “What is it that I am truly needing?”
In most cases, when you stop to ask yourself, “What am I needing?” you will discover that it is not chocolate, cheese or pasta that you are craving, but rather a quality, such as peace, safety, comfort, love or even energy-a greater connection to your own life force. Just stopping whatever you are doing, taking a deep breath, and asking yourself, “What am I needing?” can be a tremendous gift you can give to yourself. First of all, it gives you an opportunity to PAUSE and take a moment for yourself. A deep breath not only gives all the cells of your body much needed oxygen, but a chance for you to break the momentum of mindless, automatic, stress-induced eating behaviors.
Then, you can go inside and determine what you are feeling. Do a quick scan of your body and notice any areas of tightness or tension. Without any judgment, give these areas some attention. Take a moment to pay attention to the feelings in your belly, jaw, pelvis and neck and shoulders. These are areas where you may be holding tension. Put your hand over the area that feels tight and send yourself some love. Ask yourself again, “What am I needing?” If you hear any voices coming up, telling you a story about why you are feeling the way you are, let them go, and stay with the feeling. It is through staying with the feeling and assessing what you are needing-and then giving it to yourself-that you can receive the true healing and free yourself from the mindless binge eating, of the past.
Perhaps when you take a moment to go inside and feel the sensations in your body, you realize that you have a strong need for some peace and relaxation. Even if your outer environment is chaotic and stressful in the moment, you can still breathe in peace and relaxation to the parts of yourself that need it the most. Put some space around the area of your body that feels tight, and imagine surrounding that place inside your self with a white or golden healing light. Let the quality of peace fill all the cells of your body, with a particular focus on the area that needs the most attention. Then imagine that you can put some space, and light, around your entire body. Take in this new feeling of peace. Allow the relaxation to infiltrate your entire being, and imagine any tension you are holding melting away.
Before you dip your fork into that rich, sugary cake on your husband’s plate-only to feel disgust with yourself moments later-just take a moment to inquire what is really going on for you. When you take the time to look within, you may get a sense that you are feeling anxious, and are reaching for carbohydrates as a familiar and habitual way to soothe yourself.
Instead, try this. Ask yourself what “am I needing”, and take a moment to let the answer come to you. If you get the answer, “peace” for example, ask yourself if there is anything else that you are needing, also. Let the answer come from deep inside yourself. Perhaps it’s not just peace that you are longing for, but also a feeling of safety. Take the time to breathe in both peace and safety. Then imagine with all your senses that these qualities are flowing into you and filling you. Visualize and sense a blanket of safety and relaxation being wrapped around you. Allow a light of protection to surround you, and imagine that this protection comes from a higher plane of existence, where you can have access to a deeper peace and connection with all of life, than you may have conscious awareness of, here in this world. It is by setting your intention to connect to this higher plane of existence, that you can begin to access it. Allow the higher light to literally feed and transform your cells. Notice if your true hunger is perhaps a longing for greater love and connection to your deeper self.
Look at the food you were about to reach for and ask yourself, “Do I really want this?” “How is this food going to make me feel?” Project yourself forward in time and imagine that you just ate the offending food. Witness yourself stuffing the cookies in your mouth, or inhaling your son’s left over pasta, as you may have done so many times in the past, and then let yourself experience your typical feelings after the predictable binge. Feel the familiar feelings of guilt and regret, and with joy, realize that you are making a new choice. Allow yourself to feel the sense of empowerment that accompanies your decision to act in a new way.
Each time you STOP, breathe, and ask yourself the magic question, “What am I really needing?” and then take a moment to give yourself that quality that your being is longing for-instead of mindlessly stuffing food into your mouth-you are creating momentum for a new, more positive set of behaviors to become natural to you. One day, in the not too distant future, you’ll find yourself automatically throwing the leftover macaroni in the trash, or putting the cookies in the freezer, or not even paying attention to what your husband is eating, and realize that at a very deep level your entire relationship to food has changed. Remember to celebrate by giving yourself what you are truly needing!

Yep- that is what the core focus is in Social Media.
Ok- let’s get REAL. If Social Media marketing is about conversation, then should there not be words that fit in to what the culture of social media is all about? Should not you paint a picture with your words? Should your words not elicit feelings and emotions?
Of course they should.
Words are a marketer’s tool box. Here are 11 you need
1) “YOU.”
There is nothing more powerful to a person reading a message or conversation that has the word YOU in it, over and over. Many people have an “I” mentality, and in social media, you are not the deal. The other person or side of the conversation is.
There are 2 forms of conversation in social media::
a) “Contribution” and b) “Distribution.”
” Contribution conversations” contribute to the whole, and add Value to the conversation. “Distribution conversation” distributes the message/agenda you want- and has little inclusion of someone else. Contribution words use YOU many times. Distribution words use “I” or ‘Me” many times. Use the word YOU and become a Contribution Agent in social media, not a distribution rookie.
2) “A Person’s Name.”
Duh. There is nothing more beautiful to a person than their name. This is a given. I am surprised how many tweets, notes, and messages i get and also read that do not say the person’s name. Use their name at least once in every communication and message as it adds to the conversation.
And also, a person will retain almost 70% more of what a message says, if their name is within the first 3 words. Chris Brogan is a master at this. I have seen and studied him, and every time he tweets or sends a message- ususally the name is the first word.
Smart. VERY smart. we all should follow that lead.
3) “Connection.”
This word is an indication that you want to connect and start a relationship of some kind and create an ongoing conversation. Many folks use the phrase “get together” or “meet up” or “network.” Thise words are good- but CONNECT has a power within the word.
Electricity us usable when you connect to it. Same thing as a battery in a car which powers the car. And idea is only powerful when you CONNECT to it. The Power is in the Connection-when 2 things come together. It is the same in new relationships- it is all about CONNECTION.
4) “Tribes.’
This is an interesting word. Seth Godin has a cool book called “Tribes.” I suggest that you read it. But as far as a word for the social media arena, it is a word that helps define that you are within the culture and understand the community aspects of what social media is about.
In tribes around the world, it is all about community and belonging to that community. It is the same in social media. Recently I described the community we are building within a project as an “empowered tribe” and some people got it- and well’others did not.
Make sure if they do not understand the concept of tribes, then you explain it.
5) “Transparent.”
In social media, being REAL is critical. And part of being REAL is being open and transparent. I love it when I read statements like “full disclosure” and people are disclosing that they have an interest or are on some board of a company they are talking about. THAT is so rocking hot. It shows that they are being transparent and nothing to hide and telling the truth.
And that is what social media is about in many respects- TRUTH about you- and what you are and do. THAT is transparency. Use that word when talking about the truth. Just being “transparent” – that says a lot in one word about you.
6) “Strategy.”
Social media without a strategy for it, is like building a house without a blueprint. You need to develop, plan, start, and execute a strategy for your social media success. We call it a “Social Media Path.” What PATH do you plan on developing for your business, and how will that fit into your current model of business? What will be your Primary social media Platform, and what will be your secondary platforms?
PATH stands for “Purpose- Actions-Tracking-How.” what is your PURPOSE for integrating social media into your business? Marketing? Prospecting? Client communication? Customer service? What ACTIONS will it take? Videos? Blogs? Podcasts? Social Networking? What TRACKING system will you use to keep the platforms at maximum pace? And HOW are you going to Execute the Actions? Through employees? Through outsourcing? Through a combination?
Strategy is a word that you just talk about. You need one. And so do others that you know as well.
7) “Branding.”
This word has been around for a while. But you still need it in your focus and communication. Branding is a word that you need to utilize not only in your messages, but your focus as well.
YOU are the Brand is a popular way to discuss social media marketplace image making. But that is not totally true. The PERCEPTION of you is the brand you are building- good or not so good. So make sure that if you use this word in social media this year, you realize that PERCEPTION Rules in Branding.
Brand yourself in the marketplace. But make sure that you focus on the VIEW and FEELINGS people have of you and experience when they think of you—and what you do- and not just some catchy slogan or icon.
8 “Trust.”
You need to be an Agent of Trust. Chris Brogan has a book coming out called “Trust Agents.” Should be a rocking hot book. What about you? Are you an Agent of Trust? Just like a Real Estate Agent markets real estate, you market Trust in all you do. That is the real estate of the heart.
I like to get that word out there quickly-as i believe that people i do not know, that is on their mind. “Can I trust this guy?” And I usually message something like, “Our company helps build leaders and businesses through concepts and ideas that people can trust and feel good about.”
THAT is using the word Trust- to build trust.
9) “Family.”
Some people use “network.” Some use “team.” Some use the word “community.” Some use the word “friends.” I like the word “Family.” it is personal, powerful, and paints a picture of what social media really is building- a family that can help, be there for each other, educate, equip, and empower for greater good.
One thing that I do- and again- just an idea’I welcome everyone on facebook or twitter or youtube or any other social connection with “Welcome to the family!” This says so much more than “thanks for following me” or “appreciate the connection.” We ARE family- and I hope and pray it stays that way.
10) “Value.”
It ia ALL about Value. It is all about the VALUE that YOU bring to the table. It is all about the VALUE of your conversations and contributions.
And it is ALL about the VALUE that you help others see within themselves. Edify. Encourage. Empower. And become a “Carrier of Value” to everyone you meet in social media and GIVE some Value to them.
11) “GIVE.”
This is the MOST important word. GIVE. Why? In social media, it is not the same ol business methodology. It is Biblical- if you will. “Give first- and what you give- you reap.” Giving is the culture of social Media. Why do you think that people give so much rocking hot info on their blogs?
Giving is a Power. It is something that not only is part of the evolving culture of social media, but also the CATALYST of much of what social media has already become. if you are a marketer, New Marketing can be almost threatening to you as it flys in the face of traditional marketing- or does it?
No- not really. It is simply marketing that puts PEOPLE FIRST- not profits. It put RELATIONSHIPS FIRST- not results. And it puts GIVING FIRST- not grabbing for their checkbook.

1) Social Media Philosophy.
2) Social Media Conversations.
3) Social Media Marketing Actions.
4) Social Media Core.

You’ve been running all day. You get the kids off to school, race to work, get a few errands done and if you have time, try to knock off a few more things on your to-do list. Now it’s about three o’clock. You’ve just made it home in time for the school bus, start to think about your children’s afternoon activities, responsibilities and what you can whip up for dinner. You’re tired, frustrated and all you can think about is what you’re about to eat the minute you get your hands on some food.
Sounds familiar? It’s a common scenario with a predicable outcome. The children race in, backpacks flying everywhere, the dog starts barking, everyone winds up in the kitchen and what happens? As your children eat everything in sight out of hunger, you eat twice as much possibly out of fatigue, anxiety or as a means of self-soothing yourself after a stressful day. After the last bite or handful goes down, the familiar feeling of discomfort, disgust and guilt takes over.
Why do you do this and why is the outcome so predictable? Unfortunately, it has become a habit that you have incorporated into your routine. You may have found mindless munching to be the quickest, easiest method to boost your energy. Maybe you are “stuffing” your feelings as a way to keep them at bay. Finally, you may never have considered that your body is “hungry” for some nurturing self care.
Every reason for the binge offers valuable clues as to what it is we really need. The least it shows us is the need to pre plan for the inevitable. More often, the binge is trying to fill a greater need for something we feel is missing from our lives. Whatever the reason, it leaves us feeling empty, uncomfortable and out of control. So what do you do?
First of all, berating yourself for binging only encourages another binge. Remember, it is a self-soothing technique you have employed to help yourself feel better. Imagine a hurt child who’s trying to tell you why she’s hurt. Typically, telling you her story is the first step to feeling better. Once she feels heard she feels as if a weight has been lifted. She feels understood, validated, loved and can happily move on after a few minutes of explaining her feelings and receiving a supportive hug from someone who cares. Now imagine that same child but instead of listening to her “crisis”, you forbid her from explaining her pain or feeling her emotions and you choose to feed her instead. How does she feel?
• She’s frustrated with the feeling of being squelched.
• She’s unlikely to feel better because she’s still dealing with emotions that haven’t been adequately felt and dealt with.
• She’s never had an opportunity to resolve the conflict which caused the pain so the painful feelings remain.
• She feels hopeless that this feeling will ever change.
This is what we do to ourselves when we binge. We squelch that hurt child and fail to uncover the unmet need. The need remains unmet, we remain unhappy, unfulfilled and overweight. This cycle of binge, feel bad, binge again is a cycle leading to nowhere but bigger clothes and less self esteem. So what can you do?
The first step is to acknowledge what it is that you are doing. You may not even be aware of this pattern but have begun to notice a change in weight. Next you must believe this is something you can change. You have the power to change the way you think, feel and behave. Once you believe that, you can work towards changing whatever behavior no longer suits you.
The next step is to pre plan. Having healthy, crunchy alternatives is a substitution for the behavior that will at least prevent further weight gain until you determine what it is that you really need. Next, ask the question “what do I really need right now?” Maybe it’s more sleep, better relationships, more down time, confidence or respect. The key is in the three R’s:
Recognize what it is that you are doing, realize it is your body’s way of signaling a need for greater self care and respect the message your body is trying to tell you.
Once you recognize that you are bingeing to fill a void, squelch an emotion or prevent a painful feeling from erupting, you’re on the right road to recovery. Now it’s time to listen to that hurt little girl with an ear willing to listen and a heart filled with compassion. By discovering what you truly need, you’ll begin to nourish yourself with the “food” you’ve been so desperately searching for.
