Business Blogging – That Really Work

January 2, 2010 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Many large and small businesses alike have recently discovered the great advantages of blogging in maintaining good communication relationships with both employees and customers. It is obvious that for some people, blogs have become a means of sharing information and expertise at very advanced levels and this can only mean increased profit for the company. It is a common knowledge by now that small businesses profit the most from blogging. Why? Because a highly specific web page such as a blog, successfully substitutes an extensive online presence. Instead of a static page, you offer a very dynamic blog where feed-back is encouraged and various issues get tackled with.

Many Internet experts consider blogs a very informal, yet popular way of developing business contacts, since, the informational content receives a different approach than in the case of classic promotion sites. Business owners can definitely enjoy great recommendations from users, but there are also dissatisfied customers who could review the products or services unfavorably. You’ll have to be prepared to handle such situations with the utmost diplomacy in order to avoid a worsening of the situation. On the other hand, a business blog provides the opportunity to run market research and avoid hiring employees that don’t fit requirements.

Business blogs also function as the right tool to spread news to all the employees at once; this kind of blog application is usually preferred by larger companies who can reach the staff in a more comfortable way and on a daily basis. Statistics claim that blogging significantly contributes to team building and communication between the departments of the same company; hence, there has been an increased preference for blogging over newsletters. Nevertheless, we also have to mention the more difficult aspects of business blogging as well.

For instance, maintaining an updated blog requires quite a lot of time and work, it may even be necessary to have someone perform all the operations on a regular basis. Then, the e-commerce possibilities are fewer when it comes to using a blog over a regular site; you may find it very advantageous to start blogging when you just initiate your business online, but then, you may choose to use it in parallel with a regular promotion site, once things get to look brighter. If at the beginning you take advantage of the minimal costs required by a business blog, later you need to monitor efficiency first and foremost.

SEO Myths Revealed

November 16, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

The Web is can be extremely unforgiving market place and with competition at a global level, the fight for a high search engine ranking gets all the more intense. Marketing for any online business eventually becomes a fight for a good placement on Google, Yahoo! or any of the top search engines. After all, most surfers begin browsing with a search engine, making search engine optimization essential for all e-businesses. The logic is simple – higher rankings translate to increased traffic with results in higher exposure and sales. SEO remains the number one priority of any online marketing strategy.SEO techniques are tried and tested methods employed by professionals who have garnered years of experience in web development, IT and Internet-related fields. There are no free lunches in the SEO world! Most “tips and tricks” posted online have been used and abused by web designers everywhere. In addition, some SEO firms offer services that are in blatant violation to search engine polices. These forbidden practices, dubbed black hat SEO, can often result in the death knell for their clients – a ban from a major search engine. Thus SEO remains tricky business, often misunderstood by websites, but still essential for competing over the web.The Internet remains the largest repository of information anywhere, and like every other topic, SEO has its set of hoaxes and myths.• Resubmitting URLs: This ancient practice endorsed by novice SEO consultantsmay have helped a few years ago. It is common knowledge that most search engine’s databases are not erased every few weeks. So, a once submitted website’s ranking will not change if resubmitted a few weeks later.• Meta Tags: Keywords remain essential, but the meta keywords tag has been ignored by major search engines for a while now. It is not uncommon to read SEO advice proclaiming meta-tags to be an essential SEO practice.• Impact of PPC ads: Another common misconception is that pay-per-click advertising on a particular search engine has an effect on organic SEO rankings. PPC ads have no bearing whatsoever on the placement of a website on the SERP.• Linking: This practice falls into a very grey area, considered by many to be black hat. Link farms have long been blacklisted by Google, but many a naïve developer falls for the old tip that says “linking with any kind of website is essential”.These are but a few of the many SEO myths that still persist across the Web. Only an experienced SEO company can properly handle your website’s SEO ranking. Choose an SEO firm that understands well the implications of its practices, and will neither jeopardize your company’s search engine placement nor risk its integrity with black hat tricks.

Three Tips for Creating a Booming Blog

November 4, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Recently, celebrated Google engineer Matt Cutts offered five tips to help you optimise your website. This is great news considering the fact that when the advice comes straight from Google, you need not look else where for guidance or seek help from any other SEO guru. It is almost like obtaining tips of a horse race directly from the horse’s mouth!

All the five guidelines offered by Cutts are great and highly effective. In this article, we shall concentrate only on one of his tips: “Create a blog and post often.”

The most common perception among many SEO experts is that the more links your website has, the higher will be the search results. In addition, they also believe that more links also helps a website to get higher page rankings in the top search engines. Technically speaking, this is only half the truth. While more links to a site are always welcome, the most important aspect is the quality of the links rather than the quantity.

According to Cutts, “If authoritative sites link to you, you must be good, and, therefore, you get to the top of the list.” However, all said and done, getting links is the main idea behind everything and one has to put in a lot of effort for this. Keeping this in view, Cutts advises the Web masters to start blogs on their site. This is a great piece of advice from Cutts, since he does not suggest getting links from directories, industry portals or anywhere else. Instead of working hard towards reciprocal linking, Cutts suggests blogs, which in fact translates to creating more content on your website.

It is common knowledge that any virtuous politician would always prefer to answer the questions he wished he was asked rather than the questions he is actually asked. Similarly, when people ask search engine marketers (SEMs) where to find links, they feel duty-bound to provide an answer. However, Cutts is no ordinary SEM, but clever enough to answer the question that he wished people asked him.

So, when someone asks Cutts, “How does a site owner set up his site so people will want to link to it?” he is quick to retort. His answer is simple, yet significant. According to Cutts, the appropriate reply to the question is setting up the cart and the horse in the correct arrangement. If you try to read between the lines, you will realise that Cutts is equating the horse to the content that will drive the cart – or links in this case.

Normally, other people would have answered the question differently putting the cart or the links before the horse, i.e. content. This is just because people, even many SEM experts, pointlessly endeavour to answer the question that they are asked – ‘How do I get more links for my site?’

Now, taking over from Matt Cutts, let us discuss the three vital tips on starting a thriving blog for your website.

1. Host A Blog On Your Site

If you already have a website or own a Web domain, it is always advisable to host your blog on your own website. The proposed blog could have an URL such as www.blog.yoursite.com or www.yoursite.com/blog

You may utilise tools like the Blogger to permit you to FTP your blog on your website. In addition, setting up tools such as the WordPress on your server will enable you to position your blog anywhere on your website. Although both the tools are superb for starting a blog on your site, what is crucial is that the blogs should exist in your Web domain.

There are many blog tools that enable people to install blogs on different Web domains even though they might not own them. These tools are never helpful as they make it difficult for you to move to new blog tools. And the worst part is that the links you earn for your website actually give credit to these domains that you have no relation with.

2. Permit Remarks

Website owners as well as businesses that have blogs on their sites are often worried about the negative comments people often make in their blogs. But, I can assure you one thing and that is the benefits of having a blog on your website far overshadow the negative comments.

In fact, the comments of other people provide your website with content free of cost. Neither have you spent any time or money in creating them, nor do they require any artificial optimisation. On the other hand, the positive point is that you are able to pose as a company that is committed to listening to requirements, concerns and comments of its clients. Having a blog on your website also helps you to receive free and quick feedback from a cross-section of people and this was never achievable before. Simultaneously, you are playing a crucial role in being in-charge of the social media that is being fashioned by your clients.

3. Contribute to Other Blogs

If you want your clients and other people to know about the blog on your website, the best thing to do is to participate in other’s blogs and leave your comments there. If you adopt this policy and participate in blogs related to your industry, it will be the quickest way to convey your message. In addition, you are also able to provide a link to your site through your name in the blog. In fact, the truth is that if you can write something interesting and meaningful for the readers, you will find a large number of them visiting your website to learn the latest thing that you have to say.

Before I conclude, I would like to emphasise that irrespective of the fact that you own a small, medium or a massive firm or are into B2B or B2C venture, starting a blog on your website will always turn out to be beneficial in more than one way.

The Future Value Of Your Blog

November 2, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

All the hype about the sale of Weblogs Inc. to America Online (AOL) has given rise to the now famous question – How much is your blog worth? In acquiring Weblogs Inc., AOL has provided some concrete metrics to future valuation of blogs. How much will traditional media be willing to pay for a blog? Conversely, how much would you sell your blog for?

AOL-Weblogs Inc. Deal – Benchmark for Future Blog Valuation

Weblogs Inc was established by Jason Calacanis and Brian Alvey in 2003. It is a network of blogs which includes under its wings successful blogs such as Engadget and Autoblog. Jason Calacanis pointed out that Weblogs Inc. earns in excess of $1 million yearly in Google Adsense revenues alone.

AOL purchased Weblogs Inc. for a confidential sum assessed at somewhere between $25 – $40 million. After said purchase, Tristan Louis came up with a blog valuation scheme based on the deal. He created a chart of blog value using the value of each inbound link to Weblogs Inc. as the basis. It is common knowledge that blog readers follow links. Search engines also act as users and primarily determine blog quality rankings based on linkage data thus direct and indirect value links are a great proxy for value measurement. In the blogosphere, conversations that nurture connectivity represented by links and indexes like Technorati give a vantage view of the value of a blog.

Tristan Louis itemized the publicly available data (list of blogs indexed) at Weblogs Inc. network including the number of inbound links (Technorati blog numbers) per blog divided by the purchase price to determine the value of an inbound link to a blog. At the rumored price of $25 million, the estimated value is $ 564 per link. At $30 million, it is $677.57 per link and $903.42 at an acquisition price of $40 million. Interestingly, the consumer segment chalks up the biggest percentage of linkage. Engadget represents over a third of the overall network traffic.

Applying Tristan Louis’s Weblogs Inc, sale, Dave Winer has also sold http://Weblogs.com to Verisign for a rumored price of around $2 million. Blog entrepreneur Nick Denton, founder of Gawker Media has signed a deal with VNU Media to publish Gizmodo (gadget blog) across Europe in six languages. VNU Media is a leading worldwide information and media company which owns ACNielsen, Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter, among others. With this deal, blog publishing has hit big time.

However, the value of a blog is not calculated based solely on links using AOL’s purchase of Weblogs Inc. Jason Calacanis, the man behind Weblogs Inc., disputed using links alone as proxy for the value of the blog network. He reiterated that the acquisition price was based also on the ever reliable revenue, earnings, management and other metrics.

Tristan Louis based his valuation scheme on links to a blog but he also acknowledged the significance of technology, talented management team, financial performance and growth. There is direct correlation between links, traffic, revenue and earnings capacity of a blog or blog network but it takes sound management to maximize all these potentials.

Value of a Blog – Some Metrics to Consider

How much is your blog worth? There is no one standard gauge yet. But one way to measure the value is to look at certain factors to gain a better perspective on how to measure the future value of a blog.

Aside from number of links as mentioned earlier, traffic level is a key factor in determining blog value. Highly trafficked blogs definitely have a bigger potential for earning compared with those blogs with few readership. A blog’s success is highly dependent on visitors/readers. However, ascertaining the value of traffic is a thorny issue. Some bloggers value traffic anywhere from $3 to $10 per hit a day. From this data, a blog with 2000 unique visitors (page views) would be worth between $6000 to $20,000. The downside to this valuation approach is that some traffic is more valuable than others. A personal blog might have 1000 unique visitors but more difficult to convert to revenue than a blog with 1000 readers that blogs on the topic of digital cameras.

Aside from diverse traffic streams that come from bookmarks, direct links or RSS subscribers will make risk of losing traffic low. Social bookmarking sites are inching their way to becoming prime sources of traffic, with peer referral at times carrying more weight than search results. There are a number of well known bookmarking sites you should link to. Top bookmarking sites include Furl, http://del.icio.us, Diggs, to name a few. By leaving an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed, you can feed you readers’ desire for information. Visitors can get automatic updates whenever you provide new content. Having a fairly good base of bookmarkers and subscribers ensure a steady flow of fans and repeat readers – the all-important traffic.

In the blogosphere as in any other field, revenue or earnings is a major focus. a logical approach to blog valuation would be to base its worth upon current and projected earnings, assuming that your blog is earning something to start with. Again, there are varying views on how to use current earnings to measure a blog’s value.

Some bloggers opine you should expect six to eight months earnings as your blog value. A blog with a daily income of $150 would be worth between $27,000 – $36,000. Still, others determine a blog’s value as being two years of current earnings. A blog earning $150 a day would be worth $108,000. Again, there is a huge disparity between these methods of assessing value. Having diverse streams in the form of multiple affiliate programs also increases blog revenue. An affiliate program is an advertising model in which a blog owner markets via his blog a given product, on behalf of another company. The blog owner is reimbursed a percentage of all sales sold thru his affiliate link. Reimbursement rates can vary from 1% and upwards. Google Adsense is a prime example.

Visitors access blogs throughout the Internet primarily through search engines. If your blog does not have a post appearing in the top ten search engine rankings, the chances of visitors reaching your blog is low. A blog’s presence on relevant search engines is a significant medium for maintaining a blog’s success. Search engine ranking and pages indexed in search engines is critical for generating traffic to a blog. Having your blog among the top results of a search or receiving a high Google PageRank (a system for ranking blog posts) would increase your blog’s overall value.

High quality content will always be a key factor for determining a blog’s value. As has been said time and time again – Content is King. Moreover, search engines can only “read” a blog. What attracts a search engine are the words, the content of a blog that explains, informs, shares and educates readers. Good content increases blog value.

All these aforementioned objective metrics can be considered in assessing the value of a blog. Added to all these, a talented management team behind a blog, its underlying tools and blog technology in use can further help to estimate the future value of a blog.
