The First Ever Tots100 Index of British Parenting Blogs and Bloggers

November 15, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Here at Talking Tots, we’re pretty keen on new technologies. We have our own website, we write our own blog, and we’re even learning to love things like Twitter and Spotify (Madonna’s back catalogue at the click of a button – what’s not to love?)
We also love to read other blogs – particularly those written by fellow parents, mumpreneurs and Mummy-related ventures. But when we looked for a list of influential parenting blogs from the UK, we realised that a list doesn’t really exist – although Susanna at British Mummy Blogs has made a great start here.
Although Mummy blogs are a newer phenomenon in the UK than in the US, we knew there were hundreds of British Mummy bloggers just waiting to be discovered. We pulled together a list of around 250 UK blogs, but we had no idea which blogs were being read by parents, and which were most influential. So, with lots of help and advice from social media guru Brendan Cooper, we’ve put together our own list.
The Tots100 Index is the first index of the top 100 British parenting blogs and bloggers. How did we find our top 100? We took the 250 blogs we found and created a scoring system that rewards blogs for three things: currency (ie the blog has been updated regularly and recently), influence (other people link to the blog) and popularity (lots of people read it). We’ll be updating the Tots100 Index regularly, and including details of movements up and down the index in future editions.
(For a more detailed explanation of how the rankings work, and how to submit a blog to the Index, read down to the bottom of the post.)
We hope those of you looking for great British parenting blogs will find the list useful, and perhaps you’ll find a few new favourites in our directory – there are some brilliantly useful, funny, inspiring and moving bloggers in our index and we’ve loved discovering all of them.
Best Wishes,
Tracey and Lisa

What Do The Scores Mean?
120 blogs were originally included in the index. Each blog was assigned a score from 1 (bottom ranked) to 120 (top ranked) in seven categories:
1. Technorati Authority: number of blogs linking to this blog in the last six months
2. Technorati Inlinks: number of inbound links, excluding self-referring hits
3. Yahoo Inlinks: number of inbound links in last six months (excl self-referring hits)
4. Google Blog Hits: number of posts/links/weblinks in Google
5. Google Hits Recent: number of links from the last 30 days
6. Readers: number of subscribers based on Feedburner and Google Reader
7. HowSociable: the blogger’s visibility outside the blog, measuring activity on sites such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
This meant a blog scoring the highest score in each of these categories would achieve a maximum score of 840 points. The lowest possible score was 7.
These aren’t perfect metrics but we believe that combining measurements from Google, Technorati and Yahoo ensures an accurate reflection of a blog’s influence, while the inclusion of HowSociable clearly showed how the top bloggers use social media to boost their blog’s profile.
There are a couple of blogs on the index that haven’t been updated in a few months, but still scored highly because of high numbers of residual links. We expect these links to reduce over time, and the blogs will fall down the index – but we’ll be removing any blogs that haven’t been updated in 6 months or more for the next index.
We welcome suggestions of how to improve the Index, as well as suggestions of new blogs to include in the next index. Our criteria for inclusion are simple: the blog must be by/about parents, be written by a British parent or a parent in the UK, and you need to score higher than someone already in the index.

What Is Wordpress And Why Should You Use It For Your Online Business?

November 9, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

What is Wordpress?  The simplest answer is: it’s a blog.

Blogs, an internet word that originated from the term “web logs,” have always been seen as online diaries for people who wanted to share their ideas in life, their opinions about the things that happen around them, and the events of their days.  And why not?  This is the reason why blogs were invented in the first place – as virtual journals for people who want to share their thoughts and feelings to the world.

But blogs have a deeper marketing significance, one that is so powerful that blogs have actually become vital business weapons in the world of electronic commerce.

Blogs, you see, are – by their very essence – simplified content management systems.

What does this mean?

Forget about Front Page, Dreamweaver and other HTML editors.  Forget about Joomla and Mambo.  To create a website with dynamic content that’s very easy to update, all you need is a blog and nothing else.  A blog will allow you to write and publish content with the click of a button.

Yes, it’s that easy.  And because of this, anyone can blog.  YOU can blog.

So, what is WordPress and how does it fit in our discussion so far?

WordPress is a blogging platform that has taken the internet marketing community by storm.  Its closest competitor, Google’s Blogger service, is also good but it is more restrictive and less comprehensive compared to WordPress.  For many people, WordPress is the industry standard when it comes to blogging.

What is Wordpress?  Well, it’s just the best blogging platform today.  Take a look at its fantastic features:

-           WordPress is easy to set up.  Most web hosting services today have added WordPress as an option for content management.  You can install the same by simply clicking on appropriate options.  Even without such options, WordPress can be installed quite easily as well.  No complicated instructions are involved.

-          WordPress is highly customizable.  Want to change the look of a blog?  Want to add some advertisement blocks?  Want to include new categories?  You can do all of these things – and so much more – by simply uploading new components into the system.

-          WordPress has a dedicated community of passionate bloggers.  This means that there is already a traffic source you can tap into.  This also means that there is a solid, socially-initiated support system that you can seek out if you need technical aid for your blog.  Additionally, this also means that there will be a fertile pool of WordPress users who will continue to create innovative additions to the aforementioned blogging platform.

-          Search engines love blogs, and for some reason, search engines love WordPress blogs even more.  Study the first 10 results of any give search phrase and you’re almost certain to see at least one WordPress-powered website among them.  This is because search engines love websites with constantly updated content and blogs – WordPress particularly – make content publication very, very easy.

WordPress is also free to download, and you can set it up under your own domain name and under your own web hosting service.

Once it’s up, you can write about anything and share the same with the denizens of the World Wide Web.  And once you reap its benefits, you will know the real answer to the question “what is Wordpress?”

Wordpress is your highway to a profitable online business.

How to Use Twitter

November 4, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Twitter has become a very important part of a lot of people’s lives and we have all learnt to use Twitter for all sorts of different reasons. You simply can’t escape Twitter whether it is finding out all about the breaking news before everyone else or watching a television chat show and watching with delight as a well known celebrity texts through to their profile.

Many people have spent years wanting to communicate with celebrities and this has provided them with their big chance.

Other people love the idea of communicating with people they have never met and the buzz that it provides when they get a reply or a re-tweet. I love it when people reply to me and find me interesting. It just gives you a really good feeling about yourself and makes you realise that Twitter can give you the chance to make lots of friends.

I am a big movie addict and have exchanged tweets with some amazing people over the last three months. I also use it to answer questions instead of trawling Google looking for reviews for a new film that I am thinking of watching a simple have you seen…….. Works a treat and is also a great way to share a hobby.

Twitter is also a fantastic source for creating a business, building traffic and even making sales. A simple post can drive hundreds of people to your website adding hundreds of optin to your mail list with just a click of a button.

I posted a special offer on Twitter just this morning and got an amazing67 orders and the link only took me a minute or so to type. You really can’t knock the power of Twitter.
