12 Free IPhone Applications

November 12, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

As a business owner, chances are you’re sitting on the cutting edge of technology, and what could be more cutting edge than an iPhone? The only thing more fun than showing your friends all the cool things your phone can do is actually using it to grow your business. We’re not claiming that all of these applications are going to make your business grow by leaps and bounds, but you might find some interesting ways to use them. And the rest? Well, everyone needs something fun to tinker with every now and then.
1. Facebook. Everyone’s favorite social networking addiction is now compatible with iPhone. The application allows you to take care of a lot of things you typically take care of from your desk like seeing status updates, chatting, uploading pictures, reading comments, accepting friend requests, and reading your mail.
2. Pandora. Pandora is a great music website that lets you pick the types of music you like and then chooses similar selections for you. Pandora for iPhone lets you listen to Pandora anywhere.
3. LinkedIn. LinkedIn allows you to find important contact information, update your status, read your own profiles or those of others, and get updates from the people in your network. This even lets you find LinkedIn contacts and import their information into your iPhone address book.
4. NYTimes. The coolest thing about this app is that it lets you store NYTimes content on your phone so that you can read it even when you’re not online.
5. Remote. This app allows you to use your iPhone just like a remote control for your desktop.
6. Instapaper. This application bookmarks web articles and copies them to your iPhone so that you can read them even when you’re not at your computer. The application formats the articles for a smaller display and makes them accessible even if you don’t have a connection to the internet.
7. Sportacular. This app provides standings, scores, news, and stats for professional and college sports.
8. Stanza. This is a reader that connects you with free titles on Internet libraries. You can download the e-books onto your iPhone and then read them on your own time, whether or not you’re connected to the Internet. Stanza also has a desktop application that will let you convert Word files or PDFs so that you can read them on your iPhone.
9. Now Playing. As the name suggests, this application gives you schedules for movies, plays movie trailers, and allows you to order tickets.
10. Wikipanion. Wikipedia articles are formatted to let you read them easily on your iPhone.
11. Twitterific. The plus to Twitterific is that it comes with its own mini-browser. This keeps you from having to close it and open the iPhone web browser in order to see links posted to Twitter.
12. Yelp. Yelp can determine your location using your iPhone and then provide you with reviews of local services from restaurants to dog parks anywhere in the US and in Canada.
You see? Not all of these applications are going to revolutionize your business, but they might just save you some time and make your life and little easier. And the time you save in the details could be time spent on the big picture of your business.

Blackberry Curve 8520: A View of What’s to Come

November 12, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

The Blackberry Curve 8520 is only an entry-level smartphone, which means it will not match up to the same performance level as the more beefed up smartphones that currently is flooding the market. But if this is what their entry-level smartphone looks like, then one can expect a very bright and very exciting future for high-end Blackberry smartphones ahead.

The Trackball

The most obvious change that one will notice on the Blackberry Curve 8520 is the replacement of the physical trackball with the new and impressive optical trackball. There will be some people who will be quite critical about this new technology but as far as initial reviews go, this new technology will be here to stay. The new optical trackball is very fluid and very easy to use. Probably the only problem one will encounter when using this new trackball is when one is playing “Brickbreaker,” and even then, all one needs is a little practice.

This optical trackball (technically it is an optical trackpad) is very sensitive and is also adjustable, just in case it is a little too fast for some users. There is also an option for sound, since there will be some people who will be a little bothered by the silent navigation (those who find comfort in hearing a clicking sound to accompany their movements while navigating).

There has been some concern though, regarding using the trackpad in a place with bright lights or with a wet finger. But so far, there have not been any significant complaints or comments regarding these concerns from actual users.

Perhaps the biggest benefit that the trackpad has for the Blackberry Curve 8520 is the added durability it gives to the handset. Without any moving parts, the trackpad should have a longer life than its predecessor.

The Applications

The Blackberry Curve 8520 also has a lot of applications geared towards utilizing the current trend of social networking sites. Such applications include tools for Facebook, Flickr, and Myspace. It also has the now famous TwitterBerry, which allows a user to access all the different basic functions of Twitter. Basically, once clicked, it will prompt you a question (“What are you doing?”) and allow you to answer with your Twitter Message.

The Blackberry Curve 8520 also has a straightforward set-up for emails and instant messaging. It supports the usual hosts Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, and of course, BlackBerry Messenger.

If more applications are required, apps (up to 800) are available for download in the Blackberry App World site. Also, it comes with the Blackberry Desktop Manager, for Windows and a version for Mac users will be made available in September.

The Future

Since the Blackberry Curve 8520 is an entry-level model, it cannot be expected to have the shiniest and most powerful features technology has to offer but it does give a glimpse of what the future holds. If for nothing else, this smartphone has at least given us a glimpse of the new technology RIM will most likely utilize for future models. Even if you don’t buy this smartphone, it will at least feed your interest for their future high-end devices and that is just good marketing.

One Step at a Time

November 12, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Last week I talked about the importance of doing and embracing the mediums, tools, and applications that our clients and brand’s audience’s are. This week I’ll give you some thoughts and concrete recommendations on how to do this.

Let’s start with Social Networking Service. With any social networking site you get as good as you give, this means once you get started keep going. Every site has a News Feed, Network Update, etc. that shows what your friends are up to, that means they can also see what you are up to. If you just sit on the sidelines and don’t do anything you’re effectively sitting in the corner by yourself, so take action or as I wrote about last week, do! Build out your profile, and connect/friend with friends and associates. Try a new application as part of your social networking site or join a new group. Sure you can be a lurker but I want you to participate so that you can better ideate for your brand or clients.*note I’m assuming you are already on these sites if you aren’t put Join as your first step

LinkedInComplete your profileAdd three more associates or friendsWrite at least two recommendations for your connectionsFacebookComplete your profileAdd three more associates or friendsAdd at least two applications and use them

Now you’ve got your base in social networking but we’re going to ratchet it up a little bit by expanding the way you connect with others. Ways of being socially connected that Adler back in the early 1900’s couldn’t have envisioned.  A lot has been written about micro-blogging or it’s Kleenex posterchild, Twitter. In the short time that Twitter has been around it’s gone from just “what are you doing” to very informative short notes, conversations and information. Two other similar sites worth looking at are Pownce and Plurk, the former having been around for much longer.  There’s also Jaiku but you need an invite to join Typical etiquette is to start posting for a bit and then begin to follow other users, they are more likely to reciprocate and follow you if you page looks interesting. However I want you to start getting a great learning experience, so:TwitterJoin and add the following peopleGuy Kawasaki Jeremiah Owyang Robert Scoble These three twitterati are pretty well known outside of twitter as well. Their three feeds range from information you need now to the more sublime, either way check your twitter stream early and often and add in your own Tweets/comments. Oh, and follow some of your friends or encourage them to join in as well.

Building on ways to communicate I’ll also recommend Instant Messaging (IM), yep good ole’ AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, Skype, etc. This has been around for years yet I’m amazed at how many people don’t use IM. As in inbox zero follower, I find IM can be used to answer a large part of emails that just need a simple answer or a quick back and forth. Not to mention, using iChat on a mac (with a built in or external video camera) and Leopard OSX your video chat can be a screen share as well.Best bet here is to get your office mates going or ask around I bet some are already on IM. And use it to replace that short email you were about to send.IMJoin and start usingLearn from others. One of the great things about the internet space has been the quick and easy way to share knowledge and learn from others. Social discovery and sharing sites like Twine, Digg, and Del.icio.us as Spinal Tap says “go to 11.” While it’s great to join, and for Twine you’ll have to join to use the services, but just start taking a look at Digg and Del.icio.us on a daily or more often basis.

Social DiscoveryAdd Digg and Del.icio.us to your RSS feed or daily bookmarksBetter yet join Digg and Del.icio.us and start contributingJoin Twine and start trying the Semantic web (or what might lead to Web 3.0)

What I’m bullish on:I’m an avid reader of Forrester Research and highly recommend their analysts and white papers, I never go on a trip without a stack to read. Make sure you follow Jeremiah Owyang (Twitter) and pick up a copy of Ground Swell from Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff.  Location based social networking. It would take another article to cover these but whether standalone or integrated as apps I’m very interested in where Dopplr, Brightkite, Loopt and others are going.Mobile applications, see location based above but add in geo tagging on Flickr or Car Finder on the blackberry. Chumby – Also one for a longer story or if you are wondering what is Chumby.

Lastly, aggregators like Friend Feed let you bring all of your content streams together but get started with the sites individually first then make the jump to this site.

And that’s just the start, as you use these sites and tools on a regular basis you’ll find they lead to knowledge and skills you didn’t have before. Add them to your marketing arsenal and keep on participating and learning.

IPhone Client Applications Make This a Great Time to be an iPhone Owner

November 11, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Today, when we think of iPhone client applications (app) what comes to mind are iPhone client SIP applications. This is because the capability to access voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) is a relatively new development for the iPhone. SIP (session initiation protocol), a powerful multimedia protocol, is far from new and applications for other platforms have been widely used for a long time. In the iPhone client application world SIP has not be widely available until recently. This is due in large part to Apple’s reluctance to support third party development since widespread use holds the potential to erode AT&T’s traditional cellular talk time market share. Lucky for users, iPhone client applications that allow for telephony via wireless networks (wi-fi) are here now. Skype, for example, recently announced its very own iPhone client app. This tool is actually available for download from the Apple store. There are many other SIP iPhone clients available for download as well, some from the Apple store, others from third party sites.

The availability of iPhone client SIP over wi-fi is a compromise solution that allows AT&T to retain its traditional cellular talk time market but gives users access to VoIP. While it may not be a perfect solution, it is a welcome one since iPhone users have been demanding access to VoIP since the introduction of the iPhone in 2007. SIP iPhone client apps seemed slow in coming but are now bursting on the scene and there are plenty of different VoIP iPhone clients to choose from.

If you are new to the world of Internet telephony you may not understand why having iPhone client apps for SIP is so important to users. The biggest appeal is the potential to save money. Since SIP/VoIP can help you avoid using traditional cellular minutes and make long distance calls to virtually anywhere in the world without paying toll charges, the potential for savings is huge. This technology is already widely used in the non-Apple arena so iPhone users were eager to get caught up.

We have only discussed iPhone client apps that have to do with talking over the telephone. There are many other types of iPhone client apps as well. When you use social networking sites such as Twitter or Facebook you are using an iPhone client app. You are also using an iPhone client app when you instant message or use WordPress for iPhone. The list goes on an on and it continues to grow. If we remember how new the iPhone really is, it becomes apparent that we have just scratched the surface of what is possible. We should also remember that most iPhone client apps that have been developed are based on 3G technology. We can only imagine what may happen when 4G is put in place on a wide basis.

It is an exciting time to be an iPhone owner. New, imaginative, and useful iPhone client applications come onto the market every day and protocols such as SIP are just opening up. New applications will continue to add functionality and creativity to the device. So as you try out new applications, don’t get too comfortable. Something newer and cooler is sure to be on the market soon.

Make calls from your mobile device browser. If your mobile device can connect to the internet with a browser, then you can make cheap calls from you mobile device. Check out VBuzzer’s iphone client, iphone dialer, iphone sip, iphone sip client, iphone softphone and iphone voip

My Top 10 Iphone Applications

November 11, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

I’m sure most of you have heard about Apple’s new iPhone and all the different functionality it has to offer, so I’ll spare you the details. What I will share with you are the top ten applications that I enjoy and use on a daily basis.

1. ZenBe Lists – This is a to-do-list application that lets you itemize your daily tasks. The app features a minimalist green user interface, extremely functional features, and a free price tag. I find ZenBe Lists to be above and beyond other to-do-list applications, which is why I chose it as part of my everyday apps.

2. NetNewsWire – Sorting through my feed list is much more efficient on the iPhone as opposed to on the web. That’s where NetNewsWire is so helpful; this application is an RSS reader just like its parent Newsgator only for the iPhone. So if you’re one to enjoy news feeds then make sure you review NetNewsWire.

3. Twinkle – This is a great Twitter application. If you’re asking yourself what a twitter is, don’t feel too bad. Twitter is a website that allows you to blast out short updates about your daily life (“I’m at home on Appcraver looking at this new game, and then I’m going to the market”) to your friends and people that want to track you. So what’s so special about Twinkle? Well the main differentiator is that it knows your location. It taps into the iPhone GPS and adds your current location to all of your tweets! You can also keep track of nearby twinkles.

4. Facebook – It seems nowadays everyone is obsessed with checking their Facebook; well at least I am. This application makes it easier; it gives you one touch access to all of your friends, your profile and inbox. You can even ping anybody who is online and start chatting instantly. The best part is you have immediate access to your Facebook inbox and you don’t have to login every time. Oh and did I mention it’s free.

5. Shazam – This totally free application is a life saver! Have you ever heard a song that you loved so much, but didn’t know the name of it or who the artist was? Well with this application you can solve that problem once and forever. All you do is hold the iPhone up to the music that’s playing and hit the “Tag Now” button. Shazam does the rest! A couple seconds later it will return the name of the artist, record cover and name of the song right to your iPhone.

6. Pandora – This next application is great for parties or whenever you want music playing but don’t want to assume control of the songs. All you have to do is type the name of a band, and Pandora will create a custom “radio station” around that band, which includes songs from the band itself, as well as songs that “sound like” that artist. Pandora is an amazing application for music discovery, pick a channel and let Pandora be the DJ.

7. Bloomberg – Finally a finance application that I can use to constantly stay up-to-date on markets around the world. Bloomberg offers news, stock quotes, company descriptions, top performers, price charts, market trend analysis and more. Although painful at times, I enjoy following my list of stocks. Your probably wondering what this type of app costs, well it’s free.

8. AOL Instant Messenger – AIM for the iPhone is a great product, and works just the way you would expect it to. But it does have a drawback that tends to bug me. Unless the application is open, you don’t get alerted when you receive a message. I don’t know about you, but when I get a message I want to be notified instantly. With the iPhone it presents a problem because as of now you can only have one application open at a time.

9. Movies – The new Movies application allows you to search local theaters for show times, view movie details, and watch movie trailers. There isn’t much to complain about this app, it was designed well and pays close attention to detail. What’s amazing about it aside from the free price tag is that it was developed by a college sophomore who sold it to Flixter.

10. Calendar – Number ten on my list goes to the Calendar application. You’re probably thinking, “Wait doesn’t that come with the iphone?” The answer is yes, it does come with the iPhone, which is probably why it’s such a great application to begin with. I use this calendar every day to manage my schedule, after this app I simply refuse to go back to my old desktop schedule.

There you have it, my top ten iPhone applications that I can’t live without. For more information on any of the above mentioned apps or new iPhone applications visit Appcraver.com.

Best Twitter Windows Applications

November 10, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

There are a ton of really great Windows apps out there for your desktop. But the best Twitter Windows applications, in my mind, are the ones that use Adobe Air.

Now, if you’re not familiar with Adobe air, what does is allow you the opportunity of running a program on your local desktop and updating the information it contains from the Internet. The process is seamless so that you don’t have to open up a web browser every time you want to check out what’s going on in Twitter or somewhere else on the Internet.

Back when Adobe Air first came out, there were lots of really great applications that checked Google analytics, kept you up-to-date on projects, and color palette generator’s; but the ones that I use the most now are all social media related.

Now in talking about the best twitter Windows applications, we have to mention Tweetdeck and Twirl (which can be found at http://tweetdeck.com and http://twhirl.org respectively). TweetDeck and Twirl offer instant access to your twitter status feeds, mentions, and direct messages in the same application.

The best part about it is that the program lives on your desktop! So depending on the amount of screen real estate that you have, you can actually keep one of these applications open all day long.

Just to make sure we’re clear, you really just need one or the other. TweetDeck has an awesome way of letting you split up the different conversations you’re having into panes. All you have to do is scroll to the right or the left to see what kinds of conversations are happening on twitter. On top of that, TweetDeck lets you integrate your Facebook account so you can keep up with your friends there.

Twhirl, on the other hand, takes up less screen space. Everything is laid out in a view that lets you choose a tab and move right to left. Twirl also integrates with Ping.fm (http://ping.fm), which lets you update all of your social media sharing sites at one time, with one status update. Using Twhirl, you don’t need to go to Facebook, LinkedIn, or any of the other social media sites to answer the infamous question “What are you doing.”

For those of you who like Internet-based applications, there’s a ton of them out there. My personal favorite is Cotweet (http://cotweet.com). Cotweet lets you integrate up to six accounts and pass the messages off to different departments if you so choose. So you can have one for customer service, one for sales, one for support, and one for management. It also lets you update all your twitter accounts at the same time.

Those are the three best Twitter Windows applications out there, in my book.
