Google Analytics Tutorial: Getting The Best Out Of Your Web Site
November 13, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment
Businesses are all about decisions, and informed decisions are the thin line of difference between success and confusion. This concept goes for the Internet and websites too, and any tool that provides you with information about your website is a Godsend. Analytics engine is one such simple to use and free tool that gives you web statistics. Here is a short tutorial that will help you harness the true potential of Google.
Step 1 # 1: Making an Account
Analytics software system is a free tool provided by Google. Making an account is convenient and simple. All you need to make a Analytics engine account is a Gmail e-mail id. Once your Gmail e-mail id is set up, you can go to the Analytics engine website and sign up your website for Google Analytics.
Step # 2: Installing the Tracking Code
Once you have signed into Analytics engine, you will be redirected to a page which has links to the analytics reports of your website. If you have not installed the tracking code on your websites, click on the Add Website Profile link.
If this is your first time on Analytics engine, and you have not installed the tracking code on your website or any of its pages, choose the “Add a profile for a new domain” option. Once that is done, scroll down and type in the URL of the home page that you wish to install the tracker to.
Select the time zone you are in and click Continue. Once this is done, the Analytics engine will automatically detect whether the tracking code has been installed on the website or page that you provided them with. Choose any of the code given below (best way is to press Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C) and paste the copied code into the website and webpage that you would want Analytics engine to analyze.
Make sure that you install the code anywhere before the End Body (/body) tag. Click Continue. The pa
ge will now show the webpage, website or websites that you have installed the tracker code to. Click on the View Reports link to go to the The System Dashboard.
Step 3 # 3: The Dashboard
The Dashboard is your Google homepage. Through this page, you can access almost any information you would require about your website, or even any page within the website. Once you have signed into the The System website, you will be redirected to the list of website profiles, that is, the analytics reports of any and all websites that you have installed the Google Analytics tracker code.
Once you are on the Dashboard, you can view the following analytics about your website:
Site Usage: The site usage column gives you the relevant information about the traffic for your website. The Visits column tells you the number of visits and unique visits in a given time frame. You can also know about the number of page views per visit at the Dashboard.
You can also find out the Bounce rate of your website or webpage. Bounce rate is the number of visitors to your websites who browsed away from your website directly from the landing page or the home page. Analytics engine also tells you the exact amount of time one particular user has spent on your website. It can also calculate the percentage of new and unique visits on your website.
Traffic Sources Section: The Traffic Sources Section tells you more about the traffic of your website, and explains it further. You can get information about all the traffic sources for your website. You can also divide your traffic from direct traffic, Search Engine traffic and Referring sites. Google Analytics can also give you traffic related information regarding your AdSense account if you have one.

Imagine a sidekick, a mentor or a manager who gave you all of the insight you needed to make your business’ website a success. This coach is available to you twenty-four hours a day to save you money, increase your site traffic and let you know where you stand with your competition. Most importantly, they do it all for free! Imagine…having Google Analytics.
Aside from finding you information on the world wide web, providing you with pictures, maps, news, your internet mail, videos and more, Google also offers some of the best business solutions out there. For those of you out there that don’t know, Google Analytics is an easy to use tool for you to view and analyze your web traffic statistics. This tool will teach you how many visitors are coming to your site on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, where they are coming from, where on your site they like to go, and how much time they are spending. That’s just the beginning!
We all have websites for a common reason. Most of us use our websites for profitability, to broadcast our businesses to the world, or both. Either way, how exciting would it be to see that you have hundreds of people coming to your website every month to see what you have to offer to them? With daily reports, Google Analytics will send reports straight to your email or blackberry so you know where you stand at any given time. And as of March 2008, you can now broadcast your site statistics with the world, to gain advertiser’s interest or to see where you stand with your competition! You can do this with a new program called “Benchmark Reports” – a revolution in the website analytics world.
The option for you to have more insight on your own business and website is huge in the entrepreneurial world. Google Analytics’ Benchmark Reports program allows you to opt in and share your traffic information with the world! Why is this important? There are two major reasons I can think of.
First, a lot of people use their website and site traffic to gain advertisers on their site. It’s a great source of income if you’re pulling more than 1,000+ visits per month. If you are not currently selling advertising space on your site and have a lot of traffic per month, maybe you should reconsider. Anyhow, sharing your site traffic with Google Benchmarking Reports allows a safe, trustworthy environment for ad buyers to get a feel of your reach (how many people your site reaches on a daily basis). Think about it – if I wanted to buy ad space from you, why should I trust that you really have as much traffic as you say you do? As an avid internet user, I trust Google, who can now verify that information for me. It’s just like when you pay for something online – I bet you feel more comfortable doing so when you see a Paypal or Visa logo. Google is a well renounced, multimillion dollar company. With its new benchmarking reports, you can allow Google to bring the trust in your future business relationships for you.
Second, just as you are opting to share your statistics with the world, don’t forget, your competition is too! These reports will provide data based on “industry verticals” (more commonly known as competition) to let you know where you stand compared to the next guy. Why is this important? Look at your site and then look at theirs. See what makes their visitors stay longer or go back for more. What do they have to offer that you don’t? What can you tweak on your site to make it more comparable, if not better? As you analyze these reports you can analyze your own website to make the necessary changes to stay on top of the game. It will definitely make things interesting as they’re probably doing the same thing you are, so let the games begin!
Aside from knowing where others stand, it’s extremely important for you to know where you stand at all times. It’s like being at work with a boss that never gives you feedback. What’s your motivation? Feedback is a great way for you to measure yourself, your work and the success or failure of your business. And if this feedback is offered to you at a low cost of nothing, why wouldn’t you be open to it?
Google and Google Analytics have always made it easy for you to improve your results online. I think it’s important for me to add that sharing your site statistics is completely optional and you may keep that information private if you choose. However having that option is something new in the website analytics world. It’s just another tool to add to your box while you endure on your journey to success!

SEO Analytics and Google
November 11, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment
If you want to utilize SEO to increase your website rankings within the major search engines, I must state that Google Analytics is not something you should consider utilizing for SEO. Google Analytics is flawed even with its ease of usage and tools.
Firstly, Google Analytics utilizes “page tagging technology” and this particular program can only record information on browsers which execute JavaScript. These types of browsers will never execute JavaScript in your source code. Google Analytics is wonderful at tracking visitors but Google Analytics is flawed when it comes to reporting spider behavior.
If you want to make the most of your SEO techniques, you need to understand when a spider comes into the picture, what pages the spiders are asking for and when they will come back. This information is very much needed so you can launch new pages as well as set up great internal links while prioritizing your changes with your source code. You must keep in mind that tracking spiders are as important as tracking your visitors to your website.
Google Analytics is very much relied on by numerous SEOs. I would recommend utilizing log file analyzers as compared to Google Analytics. Log file analyzers oppose page tagging with technologies directly behind web analytics. Particular tools do indeed rely on log files which are using coded server logs to mine the information. The requests for files on your site are recorded with the IP address, referral sting and user agents. This is of course more work however; the data you will get back makes it worth the effort.
Log analysis allows you to build filters. Google Analytics does attempt to address this however; Google Analytics lacks the control which you have. You are not allowed to upload log files with Google Analytics as with other applications.
You will need to check reports as well as access then online. Google Analytics does not make this accessible and offers no way of archiving your data. Google has full control over your particular data period. If Google changes the style of reporting or the interface, you will then be stuck with whatever Google gives you. If you think about it, do you want Google to have control over your website as well as your visitors? Of course you don’t therefore, do not give Google that particular power which you should retain in the first place.
It sounds as if I’m on a rampage about Google, I’m here to state I am not however if you are looking to make the most with analytics, you should utilize multiple tools. Where I’m stating that Google contains many flaws, I will also state that Google Analytics is not overall a useless tool but if you want a tool which addresses the serious needs of your business marketing needs, Google Analytical is not for you.

Mandatory FREE Tools For SEO
November 10, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment
The basic presumption of people over SEO is that it cannot be measured. This could have been true a few years back, but since search engine optimization has become mandatory for websites to make its presence felt in World Wide Web, there are now several tools available to take control of the process in terms of measuring it.
I just want to list out some of the most required tools to monitor SEO process in detail.
Sitemap Generator:First step of any SEO process is to create a search engine friendly sitemap. All the search engine bots, particularly googlebot will come and look for sitemap.xml in a website. The sitemap makes the crawler’s job easy by letting it know the list pages that a search engine should index or crawl. Xml-sitemap.com provides an online sitemap generator tool which makes any webmaster’s job easy for creating sitemaps.
Google, Yahoo and Bing Webmaster Tools:
This is the tool which is used to check the performance of various parameters of SEO process, which are used for sitemap submission and to find the crawl stats, internal links, external link details, site links details, and other diagnostic tools. This is one of the most important tools for any SEO process, and it never provides any wrong information.
Google Analytics:It is one of the best freebees available from Google for me, next to Google Apps email. This tool helps us to track and analyze the traffic data in depth. The traffic details from search engines and other reference sites, geographical data and visitors’ type of data, and much much more. Use it to understand the importance of it. It is one of the unavoidable tool for any internet marketing campaign not just for SEO.
Google Keyword Tool:For any SEO campaign, you need to identify the right keywords and need to strengthen the same. It requires a great amount of skill and knowledge to choose the right keyword. More than skills, it requires huge data to find the right words. I don’t feel anyone can give it better than Google. Google Keyword tool is the one which can help us with valuable data.
SEO Browser:Search engine crawlers won’t be able to read the contents on images or flash. It can read only the texts. In order to know how bots of various browsers see the content on our site, we can use seo-browser.com. Use it to see your site like how the Google, Yahoo and Bing sees it, and optimize the on-page contents.
Firefox Keyword Position Checker:It is the handy SEO plug-in provided for Firefox, once the SEO process has been started, you have to see the progress of your keywords from some page to the top. This tool will let you know the website position for any particular set of keywords. There are hundreds of SEO tools which are paid and freely available in the net. I am sure no one will believe me if I say those are useless. I have tried paid and non-paid versions of different tools, nothing seems to be fitting my requirement. Something is always missing. Accuracy is another issue with these tools.

Best Twitter Windows Applications
November 10, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment
There are a ton of really great Windows apps out there for your desktop. But the best Twitter Windows applications, in my mind, are the ones that use Adobe Air.
Now, if you’re not familiar with Adobe air, what does is allow you the opportunity of running a program on your local desktop and updating the information it contains from the Internet. The process is seamless so that you don’t have to open up a web browser every time you want to check out what’s going on in Twitter or somewhere else on the Internet.
Back when Adobe Air first came out, there were lots of really great applications that checked Google analytics, kept you up-to-date on projects, and color palette generator’s; but the ones that I use the most now are all social media related.
Now in talking about the best twitter Windows applications, we have to mention Tweetdeck and Twirl (which can be found at http://tweetdeck.com and http://twhirl.org respectively). TweetDeck and Twirl offer instant access to your twitter status feeds, mentions, and direct messages in the same application.
The best part about it is that the program lives on your desktop! So depending on the amount of screen real estate that you have, you can actually keep one of these applications open all day long.
Just to make sure we’re clear, you really just need one or the other. TweetDeck has an awesome way of letting you split up the different conversations you’re having into panes. All you have to do is scroll to the right or the left to see what kinds of conversations are happening on twitter. On top of that, TweetDeck lets you integrate your Facebook account so you can keep up with your friends there.
Twhirl, on the other hand, takes up less screen space. Everything is laid out in a view that lets you choose a tab and move right to left. Twirl also integrates with Ping.fm (http://ping.fm), which lets you update all of your social media sharing sites at one time, with one status update. Using Twhirl, you don’t need to go to Facebook, LinkedIn, or any of the other social media sites to answer the infamous question “What are you doing.”
For those of you who like Internet-based applications, there’s a ton of them out there. My personal favorite is Cotweet (http://cotweet.com). Cotweet lets you integrate up to six accounts and pass the messages off to different departments if you so choose. So you can have one for customer service, one for sales, one for support, and one for management. It also lets you update all your twitter accounts at the same time.
Those are the three best Twitter Windows applications out there, in my book.
