12 Job Application Tips For Copywriters

November 19, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

I recently advertised for freelance copywriters to work for my copywriting business and received some 200 applications. I’ve done quite a bit of recruiting in the past, so, from the outset, I knew exactly what sort of expertise I was after. I also knew I’d be inundated with applications, and that the applicants would come from all sorts of backgrounds with varying levels of copywriting expertise. I was very specific about the application requirements, and I had systems set up to filter and categorize applications. I thought I had it all covered. I should have known I couldn’t be that lucky!
When the applications started rolling in, I was dumbfounded. All of my best intentions and systems notwithstanding, the applicants seemed intent on ruling themselves out of contention by sending sub-standard application emails. They were so bad that, at times, I felt like I was shortlisting based on the quality of the application, rather than the quality of the applicant.
This article is for any writer – experienced or not – who plans to apply for a copywriting job. It presents 12 tips (in order of importance) on how to apply in such a way that you stand a chance of making the shortlist.
1) Follow Instructions
If the job ad contains instructions, follow them. If it contains instructions which are labelled “IMPORTANT”, and which are formatted bold and red, you can assume they’re somewhat important and that there’s a reason for them. Follow them! Read and re-read the ad to make sure you’ve followed every instruction. If the ad says apply via email, apply via email! If it says to use “Copywriter Application” as the subject line, use “Copywriter Application” as the subject line! If it says to visit a website, provide a quote, supply three copy samples, and include your resume, DO ALL OF THOSE THINGS! If you don’t follow the simple, obvious instructions in a job ad, the employer will have no faith that you’ll be able to adhere to a complex copywriting brief!
2) Less is More
Don’t waste the employer’s time. Remember, they’re hiring a freelance copywriter because they need someone to take on a bit of their workload. They’re ‘time poor’. Keep your application short ‘n’ sweet. This is your chance to show what you’re capable of, so don’t fall into the trap of using big words and complex sentences. Less is more.
3) Show How You’ll Help Their Business
Try to see things from the employer’s perspective. Most employers who advertise for freelancer copywriters are looking for people who can help them streamline their business. Employers – particularly copywriting studios, advertising agencies and web design agencies – who want freelance copywriters are trying to ‘productize’ copywriting. They want to be able to ‘turn the handle’: they want an affordable freelance copywriter who can be relied upon to deliver client-ready first draft copy, with minimal supervision. They’re trying to build a copywriter factory line. Remember this when you apply, and try to show how you’ll help them achieve this goal.
4) Make Your Application Scannable
Once again, remember that the employer doesn’t have a lot of time. So make your copywriter application easy to scan. Don’t just write one long block of text. Use short paragraphs, headings and bullets, and bold the important bits.
5) Address the Requirements
If the copywriter ad lists the requirements of the job, make sure you address them, individually. (But remember, keep it short ‘n’ sweet.)
6) Be Open and Honest
Don’t oversell yourself; if the story told by your samples and resume doesn’t match your sales spiel, you’ll be discounted. If you don’t have the experience or expertise to satisfy one or more of the requirements, say so. And don’t lie about your experience or include samples you didn’t actually write. This may get you one job, but you may not get paid for it, and you’ll certainly never get another. And remember, the copywriting world is very small; everyone knows everyone, and warnings about deceptive freelancers travel very fast along the grapevine.
7) Provide Relevant Samples
If the job ad asks you to supply samples of your copy, do everything in your power to find and supply samples that are relevant. The ad may specify the kind of samples you need to supply, but if not, take a look at the employer’s website, and send samples that are relevant to their main service offering. If they do mostly web copy, send web copy samples. If they do short copy, send short copy samples. And if you don’t have any relevant samples, try to identify the core qualities required by the employer, and send samples that show you possess those qualities. (e.g. If the employer does mostly online brochure-type web copy, you’ll need to supply samples which show your ability to simultaneously capture a product and an audience, and maybe even educate the audience.) 8) Don’t Expect Immediate Feedback
Because most job ads attract hundreds of applications, and because the employer is still trying to run their business, you can’t expect immediate feedback on your application. Don’t send a reminder email after a day or two days. If you’re going to send a reminder, do it after a week or two weeks. And, unless the ad says to call, don’t call! Phone calls take up a lot of time, and this can be very frustrating to a busy employer who, most likely, has no feedback to give yet, anyway.
9) Don’t Use Broken English
If you’re applying for a job as an English-language copywriter, you have to have a solid mastery of English. If your application is written in broken English, you WILL NOT get the role; you’re simply wasting your time and the employer’s time.
10) Proof-Read Your Application
Nothing undermines a copywriter more than mistakes in spelling, punctuation, grammar and syntax (he says as he nervously scans his article!). Pay close attention to detail. You may be applying for quite a few roles, but don’t hurry through your application; always take the time to proof-read and spell-check. TIP: Although it’s not a show-stopper, try to spell the employer’s correctly!
11) Don’t Ask for Work Experience
Unless the ad specifically states that unpaid work experience is a possibility, don’t ask for it. While it certainly indicates great enthusiasm, most employers simply don’t have the time to mentor a junior copywriter, even if they’re not paying the writer anything.
12) Don’t Ask for a Critique of Your Writing
If your application is unsuccessful, feel free to ask why not, but don’t ask the employer to critique your writing. Explaining why your writing is inadequate is a very time consuming task, and it’s not the responsibility of a prospective employer. If you ever had a chance at a call-back somewhere down the line, this is the surest way to lose it.
Conclusion
You’d be surprised how many freelance copywriter applicants DON’T observe the above guidelines. These applicants make the employer’s job extremely frustrating and time consuming, and they all but rule themselves out of contention. Follow all of the above tips when applying for your next freelance copywriter position, and you’ll be a very big step ahead of your competition.
Happy applying!

Search Engine Submission – A Complete Waste of Time?

November 13, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

There are a lot of things you need to do when optimizing a website for search engines: research keywords, optimize the content, build links, monitor your rankings, and so on. But there are also things that are not worth doing simply because they don’t bring any results. Search engine submission is one of such useless SEO tasks website promoters seem to be doing on a regular basis. All the major search engines including Google, Yahoo! and MSN have special forms where webmasters can submit new sites for inclusion into the search engine index. These forms do not in any way guarantee that your website will be included into the search results, needless to say submitting to them won’t help you achieve higher search engine rankings. However there are tons of SEO companies and services of all sorts and fashions that will offer you to submit your website to hundreds of search engines for a fee. Moreover there are webmasters who actually fall for this scam and waste their money on this useless service. It’s not that these companies won’t do what they promise; it’s just the fact that what they do won’t benefit you in any way.Even if submitting to search engines was helpful there would still be just a handful of engines you should care submitting to: Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Ask and maybe a couple of regional ones. They all have free forms with only a couple of lines to fill and you can submit your site yourself in a couple of minutes. There’s not much sense in doing it however. You can get your website indexed by all the major search engines much faster by simply getting a link from a website that is already an established authority in the search results. Simply find a website related to your niche and get a link from it. The best option is to find a website that is often updated and therefore often crawled by the search engine bots. Do you know of a popular blog in your niche that allows dofollow comments? Simply post a comment there and you’ll get your website crawled and indexed within a coulpe of hours or so plus you’ll get some link juice. You can submit your website to social bookmarking sites and again it’ll be much better than submitting to the search engines, not to mention paying someone to do this. Are you planning to optimize your website and get it rank well for your targeted keywords? If yes, you’ll need to build links to it anyway. So start doing it and your website will be indexed and what’s more important ranked by the search engines with no search engine submission whatsoever.Beware of the companies offering search engine submission services. It’s nothing more than your money down the drain. If you’re really want to get your website rank high and enjoy good search engine traffic you’d better focus on SEO and link building as an alternative to search engine submission.

Google is perhaps the most popular search engine on the internet and millions of people use its service for growing their business. Because of its unlimited usability it has gone much ahead of being a mere search engine. Google today is one of the top most advertising sites online. Google advertising offers all sorts of facilities to the sellers as well as buyers in relation to a product. Google advertising uses number of tools like Google AdWord, Google AdSense and Google SEO.

Google AdWord is one of the Google advertising tools that serve both advertisers and buyers. When people are looking for product related to their search in Google, the organic search results appear according to their importance and relevence. On the right hand side of the page and on top you get to see sponsored links. This list of sponsored link is known a Google AdWord. For advertisers it serves as a platform through which one can reach to targeted buyers searching on Google. AdWord makes it easy for people who are actually searching for your products or services online. It is also cost effective because you pay only when someone clicks on your ad.

To place an ad on Google you have to create your ad in a way which has your business related keyword or phrases. By Google advertising your ad appears on the Google search page based on your keyword. Viewers may click on your ad to see what you are offering and subsequently may buy the product. You can reach a huge number of people through Google advertising network as Google will place your ad on high quality website or blogs so that millions of people see the AdWord ads and a conversion happens. Google uses Google content network to reach viewers all over the net to drive traffic to your ad.

Google advertising is a part of Google SEO program that takes the help of Google AdSense for the owners of the sites. In this you can maximize your income with ads which are contextually targeted. It is easy to monetize a site with Google AdSense. You add codes to your page and use AdSense to deliver the right ad that matches the content of the page. The chose keywords by the advertiser correspond to the ads selected by Google AdSense. Google advertising follows Pay per Click model. Every time a viewer clicks on an ad revenue is generated.

Google SEO refers to your ranking on the search page of Google. It is very important for your business to rank high in Google SEO. You have to decide the topic you are going to deal with and find related keywords and phrases that are relevant to your theme. You should also keep in mind that they are in demand in Google SEO.

Proper Google advertising optimization relating to a website involves creating link to your page, creating content which is rich with appropriate key word, web design which is search engine friendly and proper interface. If you want to stay on the top page of Google you have to include all Google SEO criteria. This way you will also attract relevant traffic to your site.

Use Google advertising to generate income from your ads. Make your ads more targeted and keyword rich to rank high in Google SEO so that you receive targeted web traffic.

FREE Viral Twitter Marketing Tool Review

Viral Twitter Marketing Phenomenon

Twitter has been exploding as of late and many marketers are trying to take advantage of this huge social networking phenomenon by building massive Twitter followings.

The thing that they don’t seem to get though is that even if they do have over 2 or 3 thousand followers, they still can generate little to no results simply because self promotion isn’t effective anymore.

If you claim that your product is the best one on the market, what makes you different from the rest? Everyone claims his products are best. There is a reason why the real Twitter masterminds never abuse Twitter and still generate insane amount of traffic, leads and sales with it.

Self Promotion = SPAM

Self promotional tweets will probably result in you looking like a spammer. No wonder, it’s not the way you do Twitter Marketing.

You can hope your tweets will go viral, but let’s face it – you’ll have to be really-really good at “Twitter Copywriting” and deliver an insane amount of value in order for someone to go the extra mile of copying, pasting and clicking the update button.

Twitter Clients

Sure, a lot of Tweeple do use clients with an option of an easy ReTweet, but one very valuable thing I have learned throughout my internet marketing career is to NEVER MAKE ASSUMPTIONS.

According to a study conducted by ReadWriteWeb.com, Over 56% of Twitter users still use Twitter.com to send out tweets. The rest 44% are using all sorts of different Twitter clients. The picture below displays the exact statistics.

Key Takeaway: Twitter.com is a good enough for the majority of Twitter users. That means that if you are relying on someone to ReTweet your content, than there is more than 50% chance that he will have to go through quite a hustle in order to do that.

Viral Twitter Software

Using Viral Twitter Software will increase your content’s chances of going viral because:

  1. The tweet with your link in it will not be coming from you. It will be coming from another person which makes your content much more valuable in the eyes of the receiving party, since it was recommended by someone other than you.
  2. The tweet will be going outside of your reach. While your tweets are only visible to your followers, if someone else ReTweets your content, it goes far beyond your maximum zone of reach.
  3. The process of ReTweeting is very simple. No need in “copy, paste, update” sequence. It is either a one button ReTweet or “enter your twitter username and password” operation.

Recommended Tools

  • ReTweet Wordpress Plugin. If you are into blogging, you’ll love this tool.
  • ReTweetNow. Viral Twitter Script which you can install on any website, blog or page. Moreover, according to it’s developer, you can integrate the ReTweetNow with your autoresponder.

The funny thing is that ReTweetNow’s total equivalent – ViralTweets, actually costs $47 while having the exact same features as the ReTweetNow does…LOL!

How Can You Choose Your Best Blogs Brand

November 6, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Personal blogs can be more random if it is simply sharing what you are doing with friends and family. But a blog for business, one you hope will make money, a blog that presents you as an expert or one to drive traffic to a website needs to have a marketing goal or purpose.

Generic will kill you. Trying to post a blog about being a stay at home mom might find fierce competition. Trying to post one about how a stay at home mom can run an internet business might be more specific. But don’t not go posting a blog until you have taken a look around. You do not want to be number one million trying to climb to the top of the heap.

Can your Blog be too niche?

Yes it can. If your blog is only about bunions, it could get boring fast. While the hot phrase is niche you do not want to make it so specific that you run out of ideas in two weeks. There is a good chance you will run out of bunion material.

However, you could instead have a blog about foot problems and this would open up all sorts of titillating subjects of interest like plantar fasciitis or narrow feet, high arches or flat feet. Now we are talking. We can go into orthotics, shoes, wrapping devices and even socks! I could go on as the excitement is never ending.

So Niche does not have to mean singular subject.

That is not to say that drivel would not be a viable blog. It would be. In that case, the audience wants to be entertained on various subjects on any given day. They are looking for random of comedic posts and nutty articles.

When it comes to your Blog, think Relationship Marketing.

A blog is more personal. This, in a place as impersonal as the web, is a big advantage. So it is an opportunity to be professional and give potential clients, customers, visitors a chance to get to know you on a more personal level as well. It is relationship marketing similar to the email marketing.

Your blog should also be about a passion or something about which you are an expert. You share information and expertise on this platform and it needs to be changed and updated.

Do not let your Blog Go down with the Sinking Ship called Mediocrity.

Please do not do a Boring Blog because that is internet litter. Usually people land on your blog because of a keyword. So you have to have something there that captures attention and makes them want to stay and even return. Welcome to my blog is not going to capture attention. If you have a boring blog that is not informative, you will find out soon enough because no one will come or stay either to come back to play.

Define your target audience. Who are they? Really define your market. Defining your target market is the part that will most directly affect your bank account so this step is vital. You have to speak to them so you have to define what is important to them so you can provide the solution or answer.
Write down your marketing objective (a.k.a. your goals) For example: I want the blog to position me as an expert in foot problems.

How to Use Twitter

November 4, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Twitter has become a very important part of a lot of people’s lives and we have all learnt to use Twitter for all sorts of different reasons. You simply can’t escape Twitter whether it is finding out all about the breaking news before everyone else or watching a television chat show and watching with delight as a well known celebrity texts through to their profile.

Many people have spent years wanting to communicate with celebrities and this has provided them with their big chance.

Other people love the idea of communicating with people they have never met and the buzz that it provides when they get a reply or a re-tweet. I love it when people reply to me and find me interesting. It just gives you a really good feeling about yourself and makes you realise that Twitter can give you the chance to make lots of friends.

I am a big movie addict and have exchanged tweets with some amazing people over the last three months. I also use it to answer questions instead of trawling Google looking for reviews for a new film that I am thinking of watching a simple have you seen…….. Works a treat and is also a great way to share a hobby.

Twitter is also a fantastic source for creating a business, building traffic and even making sales. A simple post can drive hundreds of people to your website adding hundreds of optin to your mail list with just a click of a button.

I posted a special offer on Twitter just this morning and got an amazing67 orders and the link only took me a minute or so to type. You really can’t knock the power of Twitter.

Social Marketing For Massive Traffic

November 3, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Do you know how important traffic is to the life of your website?

Of course you do. So do I now It’s something I have been learning about the hard way over the last few months. You may be struggling with it as well. I didn’t even know what it was until this year.

But there’s been a problem and that’s been that nobody has ever showed you how to do actually do it.

Not only that but a lot of these social sites don’t like you posting your website links and affiliate links all over the place so you can sometimes end up getting blocked or just not getting any traffic.

Well I found myself in the same position – I knew a little bit about social marketing, enough to be dangerous. But the problem was that although I was spending plenty of hours on these websites I just wasn’t getting any traffic or sales.

WHAT IS SOCIAL MARKETING?

Some people call it social marketing, others web 2.0. , I have even heard it called new age marketing which conjures up all sorts of images, but the fact of the matter is this – you need to be using the social marketing websites to your advantage because there’s tons of free traffic to be had from them. It’s a huge development on the internet and ignore it at your peril!

WHO ARE THEY?

They are the big names like MySpace, Facebook and others who are not only dominating news stories now, they are starting to play a really big part in driving traffic to marketers pages online. The problem though is this…

… social sites don’t like marketers! It’s true! So you have to be careful when you are using them that you don’t get banned or caught out. The key is to adopt this simple “4 H’s” approach;

Humor
Honesty
Have fun
Help people

As long as you can inject just a little piece of humor into your social marketing profile or even just a little piece of who you really are then you will start attracting lots of friends and widening your network. That’s one of the keys to this new market.

You also need to be honest throughout. There is no point uploading photos of Britney Spears or Mark Ronson pretending they’re people who want to get to know you or uploading a photo for your own profile that is much more good looking than you! So be honest.

Have fun! This is one of the most exciting things about social marketing. Its great fun . Meeting new people, learning new stuff and making money from the traffic that you get from it all at the same time. not to mention that you feel part of a friendly circle. You needn’t be on your own. It certainly makes that big world out there seem much smaller!

So you help people and they will help you. You add useful links and recommendations to your profiles. Point people in the right direction and answer any questions people post on your profile. Communicate with them, its fun.

BUT WHAT ARE THE SECRETS TO MASSIVE SOCIAL TRAFFIC?

Easy You need to learn how to get on these sites and how to maximize them. A word of warning though, they can become addictive!

Here Is 3 Traffic Tips To Show You How To Generate Free Traffic On Total Autopilot To Your Website

November 3, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Tip #1 Forums are a great place to start in and a great place to generate a ton of free traffic from. When starting out in forums it is important to provide good quality content that is going to help other members in the community. When I started I first would try to answer questions that other members were having and then move on to start threads on different subjects that I thought would help provide good quality content for others.

Do not advertise in a forum at all or you will get banned. By helping others and providing good quality content you are starting to create a viewing and building relationships with others to where they will want to see what else you have to offer and now you will generate free traffic to your website.

Tip #2 Social Networks or also called Social Media Sites. I am referring to Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter which seem to be the biggest ones out there. Here is another great way to generate free traffic. These are some of the most popular places where people hang out and talk about all sorts of things.

When using these types of sites it is important to create your profile in all of them and become an active person that is out there communicating to new people on a daily basis. Go out and build relationships with people that are in these social networks and you will see the power of being connected with these types of sites. Just like in the forums it is important to be providing valuable information to others.

Tip #3 The last and final tip that I have for you today to be able to generate free traffic to your website or capture page is by creating a press release on whatever subject you are going to target. Then can go to some free press release distribution sites and submit them to start getting exposure and free traffic coming to your site.

Honestly, I have just started implementing this strategy into my business and I was actually shocked to see the type of results that I was getting. Search engines love content and let me tell you they love press releases.

To sum it all up here it is very important to be doing these strategies on a daily basis to be able to get the exposure and the results desired. The free methods do take time, but by being consistent with this on a daily basis you will see results.

Here is my little formula for how I was doing this to generate free traffic to my website daily. I would spend about 30 to 60 minutes in the forums that I was involved with. Then I would go over to the social networks and spend at least 30 to 45 minutes in each one and then go write 2 or 3 press releases a day.

To Get Twitter Followers Building a List of Followers is Crucial

November 2, 2009 by IBI · Leave a Comment

Using Twitter isn’t hard and to get twitter followers isn’t rocket science either. No matter what knowledge is on the internet that you have to pay for, it boils down to using common sense when dealing with the internet and social networks as well. There are several known ways to increase your Twitter following and all you have to use is your common sense. Most of the paid for stuff on the internet really doesn’t help and only makes someone else rich. Let’s take a look at the common sense ways to get followers.

The first thing that you have to do to get twitter followers is to post regularly. The best use of tweeting is between 2-4 times a day and not more than that using a mix of offer and content. When you tweet, have something relevant to say. Your tweets should be more content than offer. Another way is to customize your Twitter by adding a picture and your biography. This will show that you are indeed a human and not a hated ‘bot. This gives a face to the name and biography. This will help to build a following.

Another way to get twitter followers is to start following others yourself! By this, I mean follow those that you are interested in and those that may be interested in what you have to talk about. Don’t hesitate to follow someone that you are interested in and don’t hesitate to follow other people whose ideas you resonate with. By following people, you tend to get a following yourself. This is a lot like the phrase “You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” idea. It is all reciprocal to say the very least.

The next thing that you should do in order to get twitter followers is to post a “Follow Me” button on your blogs. This will allow people that are following your blogs to follow you on Twitter. You can use all sorts of widgets that will allow people to follow you to Twitter via twitter buttons that are featured on your site or blog. This will allow people to follow you from any place on the World Wide Web. Even first time visitors will be able to follow you via Twitter. The codex for these buttons is simple computer code that will lead straight to Twitter.

You will also need to tell your subscribers that you are on Twitter. This will also allow you to have your subscribers follow you on Twitter. This will help you to get twitter followers. Even new signups will be able to follow you on Twitter. When you have the Twitter button or make an announcement to your subscribers so that they know that you are on Twitter. This will easily help you to build your list. By using these tips, you can easily get more people to follow you on Twitter and you can build your list easily by following these tips to build your list as well as your business.
