It’s easy to get started in your Search Engine Optimization career by taking the plunge and diving in.  One way to get started is to scour the internet for well written articles on this topic as well as SEO Blogs.  Initially you might even purchase an E-Book that is more extensive on this specific topic.  In early research on the SEO topic we read the SEO Theory Blogs for insight with the 2008 blog entries being more “nuts and bolts” and valuable versus some of the more recent entries.

Blogs on the specific topic “White Hat SEO” or “SEO White Paper” are especially useful because you can learn ethical search marketing techniques right from the start in your career which will prevent you from picking up bad habits that are practiced under Black Hat techniques, which means the methods are not recognized as valid by the search engine companies.  One of the most highly recommended sites is the SEOMOZ site which has GREAT resources for both the beginner and the more advanced expert such as Ranking Factors that list the concensus estimates from leaders in the field on what is most important for achieving high rankings.

Four Fundamental Areas to Focus Upon: Keyword Research, Content, Links, and Site Visibility

For any website project alway start with the KEYWORD RESEARCH exercise.  This identifies the search terms that potential site visitors would use to reach your site.  We have found the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool invaluable and it’s FREE.  With your keyword research you will have to strike a balance between “head” or primary keywords that have the maximum volume and most competition, and “Long Tail” keywords-phrases which have less competition and are easier to optimize a page for.

Next comes CONTENT. Search engines and visitors seek quality content that is unique and relevant.  You cannot simply copy somebody’s content and publish it for yourself, your content needs to be relevant and informative plus well written.  For top ranking sites you may need to generate maybe 50 or more pages of good content in order to become authoritative on your topic and achieve search engine results pages rankings.

LINK BUILDING is necessary in order to bring in the votes.  A link from an outside website is seen as a Vote for authenticity.  Acquiring good reputation backlinks is critical to moving your site up in the SERP rankings.  Directories are good to start with but DO NOT accept the offers on the internet to Submit to thousands of search engines because this can lead to spamming the indexes.  Besides link building which is an off-page factor, you also can generate good Contextual links, which are links build within the body of the page leading to other web pages on your site.  This type of an internal link is of more value compared to a simple navigation link.

SITE VISIBILITY is one area where many optimizers fall short.  Site Visibility is the combination of backlinks coming into your site, all internal links, as well as the organization of your site’s content.  Priority web pages should have more links leading to them versus low-priority pages such as “About Us” pages.  Organize your content so that readers can be directed to your most important pages.  Spend the most time on important pages and continue to update them which will allow you to attract search engine spiders due to updating content.
